I haven't the slightest idea what the formula is for compensatory picks, however, the Cowboys would get nothing of that sort should they trade him. Personally, I hope they keep him as an insurance policy. I don't think they could get any of the aforementioned need's filled with trading him alone.

Now that compensatory picks was just brought up I dont know if I would trade him. I would hold onto him and then get that compensatory pick when he leaves in free agency the following year

A starting quality guard is worth much more than that, but Jerry usually comes up short on trades .

if he signs for a starting G contract for 2017, it will be probably>$5.5M/yr.
that is a 4th round comp pick that may net us his replacement.
if he signs for $8M or more, that is a 3rd round comp pick.

That's the point. He is unlikely to get that kind of deal if he doesn't showcase himself starting. This is a big year for him.

not sure.
hard to believe he would do worst than a 5th round pick (less than $5.5M/year).
i would rather have the OL backup this year and get the pick next year, unless someone overpays in case of injury.

I'm guessing it would be a fourth at the most...whereas the Cowboys could potentially add a contributor that plays out the gate better than most fourth rounders, albeit closer to his expiration date.

Personally, I stated above I would prefer they keep him for insurance, but it is still a worthy discussion...

what if Martin or Collins got hurt in training camp or in 2016?
who will play G?
leary is major insurance for our dominant OL and romo insurance

So even Leary knows he's not getting his left guard spot back from Collins........The Cowboys would probably trade him but they aren't giving him away nor should they, probably won't get traded until training camp if another team loses an interior linemen in the off season and Dallas is probably looking for a defensive end or linebacker in return

I agree. I would only trade him for another quality player. Or I just keep him as depth and then get that compensatory pick.

Well you wouldn't get the pick until 2 years. And if no one was willing to pay him more than the $2.53M he got this offseason what makes you think next summer after another year not starting he'd get over 2x that? On a long term deal?

Pipe dream.

If you could get a 4th you take it. If you could get a conditional 5th you take it.

Leary is a great backup. He's also an expensive one who won't be here in a year. Take what you can get and move on. If we couldn't withstand an injury to a guard...with all the other talent we have on the line...then this line isn't as good as we brag about.

No less than a 4th, or a quality player in return. I dont care if he wants a trade or not.

I would trade him for a cornerback if the titans would give up Jason McCourty or Perrish Cox... I wish we would sign Leon Hall

First question - what happens if Martin or Collins gets hurt - like last year?

Second question - How do Leary compare to these G with contracts in 2015?
Salary cap going up again next year - so contract $ will rise with it.

Mathis ($4M average) was a screw-up by Phil's famous head coach.
Jeff Allen ($7 million average) - starter but no pro bowls
JR Sweezy ($6.5M average) - starter but no pro bowls
Brandon Brooks ($8 million average) - starter, no pro bowls but supposed to be a premium starter
Kelechi Osemele ($11.7M average) - budding pro bowl guard -not sure what that means
Alex Boone ($6.7M average) - good starter

Kelechi Osemele G 26 BAL OAK 5 $58,500,000 $11,700,000 $25,400,000
Brandon Brooks G 26 HOU PHI 5 $40,000,000 $8,000,000 $21,000,000
J.R. Sweezy G 27 SEA TB 5 $32,500,000 $6,500,000 $14,500,000
Jeff Allen G 26 KC HOU 4 $28,000,000 $7,000,000 $12,000,000
Alex Boone G 29 SF MIN 4 $26,800,000 $6,700,000 $10,000,000
Zane Beadles G 29 JAC SF 3 $9,750,000 $3,250,000 $3,300,000
Alvin Bailey G 24 SEA CLE 3 $6,000,000 $2,000,000 $1,000,000
J'Marcus Webb RT 27 OAK SEA 2 $5,750,000 $2,875,000 $2,450,000
Evan Mathis G 34 DEN ARI 1 $4,006,900 $4,006,900 $3,006,900
