Jason Taylor's future with Miami Dolphins uncertain

By Harvey Fialkov | Sun-Sentinel.com 2:13 PM EDT, May 21, 2008

DAVIE - Dolphins coach Tony Sparano revealed after practice Wednesday that six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor will not attending any of the teams' activities throughout the summer, a move that appears to signal the end of his Dolphins' career.

Sparano wouldn't discuss details of this stunning revelation, but it's clear that he and Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells have been unhappy with Taylor's absence from the 'voluntary' offseason conditioning program while he completed his 10-week stint on the Dancing with the Stars television show.

"I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTA's,'' Sparano said. "I know that Jason will not be at any minicamps. I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp.

"That's what we know. Jason is a player under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He knows that. Both parties are well aware of the information. That's all I'm going to say about it....I'm not going to talk about another thing about Jason."

Any time he was asked a follow-up question about Taylor, Sparano responded with, "I'm done with it," waving his hands outward.

Taylor, who said this week he has no intentions to retire, is most likely planning a holdout and demanding a trade to a contender like Dallas where his brother-in-law and former teammate Zach Thomas ended up after he was cut in the offseason.

Taylor, 33, is slated to earn a combined $16.5 million over the next two seasons. Phone calls to Taylor's agent, Gary Wichard, weren't immediately returned.

Taylor, who finished second to ice skating champion Kristy Yamaguchi in the televised competition Tuesday night, was the only player absent from Wednesday's second of three OTA (organized training activities) as he was in New York appearing on several morning television shows, including Good Morning America and Regis and Kelly.

Taylor's teammates all supported his dancing activities, but admitted that "voluntary'' OTA is a misnomer.

"Voluntaries are not voluntary because everyone is here,'' linebacker Channing Crowder said.

The breaking point might've come when Taylor said in his blog earlier this week that he would also be missing this weekend's voluntary minicamp to attend to business in Los Angeles. Taylor is pursuing a post-football movie and television career.

Taylor also denied a reported rift between him and Parcells during a recent interview on ESPN, and that he was in better condition now than he was during the 2006 season when he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

The next 'so-called' mandatory event is the June 6-8 minicamp.

Taylor is the franchise's all-time leader with 117 sacks, including 11 last year when he earned his sixth Pro Bowl honor.

Wow, what a shocker.

This is what he wrote on his blog a few days ago..

I know what the reaction's going to be: Oh, he's the leader of that team, and he needs to be there," Taylor wrote. "But, see, there're different types of leadership in sports. There're guys that can talk all the time, and try to lead by saying: 'Oh, this is what we need to do, let's go, rah, rah rah.' They're rah-rah guys. And then they're guys, like me, who lead by example. And people are saying now, 'Your example should be being there working out with the team.' Well, at the end of the day, I will show up and I will do anything I need to do, and I will be the best football player I can be."

So basically his "example" as a "leader" for being the "best football player he can be" to the younger players is to just skip offseason workouts to promote your Hollywood career, then skip training camp, but then show up the first day of the regular season so you can cash your 7.5 million dollar paycheck from your employer.

Stay classy, Jason Taylor.

Uh, you are aware it's possible he's actually BANNED from attending, not simply choosing not to attend.

I think more than likely he called to say he would miss the first day or be late and Parcells just told him to stay in Hollywood.

We all knew Parcells would cut a vet leader, Taylor was the most obvious because he's the face and outspoken.

Good luck to him... just not in Dallas.

june 1st cut
The Dolphins could cut him now and designate him a June 1 cut (assuming they haven't already used up all their designations). So I think this is more of a desire to keep him until they can find someone willing to part with a draft pick to get him. I don't think any team will trade for him, so he'll end up being cut.

Seems pretty idiotic that they would "ban" him and pay him 7.5 million to not play football when they could have just released him with Zach and the other 1/3 of the roster that they've cut over the offseason and recouped the cap hit and allocated it towards free agency and rebuilding the team. Sparano was saying just a few weeks ago how much he was looking forward to working with him.

Just playing Occum's Razor here, the e most more likely scenerio is that Taylor is just a primadonna d-bag.

Money and wins have never stopped Parcells from trying to prove a point before.

They didn't add 3 new DE's because they were counting on Jason Taylor.

You're simply making a lot of assumptions, how about waiting to hear both sides before you start calling people names?

I don't see how he would fit in here, but stranger things have happened. I can see Jerrah signing him to a 1-2 yr deal. One thing everyone can't deny is that this dude knows how to get to the ball. You gotta love having someone like that on the team.

All the DE's they added are going to be 3-4 DE's. They're not playing the same position as Taylor, who was scheduled to play OLB.

To suggest that Parcells would purposely pay Jason Taylor 7.5 to not play football when he could allocated it towards other resources takes completely illogical, idiotic and ridiculous Parcells hatred and bashing to new laughable heights ..... even for this board.

He's not banned from attending. I told everyone there were 3 options here and none of them included him wearing a dolphin uniform in 08. Parcells wants to trade him, but was foolish for being steadfast on getting a first round pick. From what i heard the jags were more than willing to give a second round pick which would have been more than sufficent considering taylor's age.

Taylor just used hollywood as leverage against the dolphins. This is just a case of two stubborn mules who refuse to give in and taylor just fired the first shot.

I just hope he doesn't end up in New England. He's still a great player and if he goes to a contender, he will be a Star and a difference-maker again.

His fall out with Parcells is predictable, but interesting nonetheless, given the great relationship he enjoyed with Saban.

Interesting, on Mike & Mike this mourning, they recently interviewed Jason Taylor and he stated that he would miss a voluntary workout this weekend because he was going to be in NY and LA for some promotional (non-football) stuff and after that, he expected to start practicing with the team again.

I personally have no problem with Jason Taylor and unfortunately, I think Bill Parcells needs someone to make an example of.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Of course Parcells isn't going to pay him not to play. But he doesn't want Taylor around the practice facilities knowing that Taylor isn't going to be part of the team.

I hadn't actually read that Parcells had banned him, are we sure he did that? I thought it was a violation of the labor agreement. I remember when the Titans tried to bar McNair from practicing and he sued and won.
