Romo's never graded fairly on your position rankings, in aggregate (i.e. by most folks). Ever. So a comparison to Dez does nothing for me (not to mention a long career of achievements and sustained level of greatness for one vs. the other)

I don't post my own personal position rankings. I just gave a list of QBs most/some would rank ahead of Romo "currently." It's like power rankings they change every week according to how teams play. Romo hasn't been playing and the last time he did he didn't look good. That's going to affect his "current" ranking. I compared him and Dez based on their "injuries" that had an affect on their play and it's affected their ranking. You're making way more of it than it was.

Without using anyone's rankings:
Romo without 2015-2016 medical history - top 5
Romo with 2015-2016 medical history - worse than top 20

He was clearly a top 5 QB after the 2014 season but that season is long gone and things haven't gone well for him since.

Romo cap hit for 2017:

Keep: 24M

Cut: 19M

Then we'd likely spend at least $5M on a new backup QB, making cutting Romo pointless. I'd only get rid of Romo if his entire $24M came off the books, which is likely impossible.

Actually, the team cannot trade Romo this season.
It is in Cowboys' interest to play Romo to see what happens.

If Romo becomes 2014 Romo, then great. We will not trade him even if he is worth a 1st round pick and more. We load up on D, resign/replace Leary, settle on WR2 solution, and will be a 2017 contender.

If Romo breaks another bone after 1-2 games again, Cowboys have shown their loyalty, but it is time for Romo to hang it up for his own good and everyone else's good. Cannot see any other team want to bet $14 million on that.

If Romo plays ok, then the fans will clamor for Dak who is playing better than ok. Romo will be a backup QB for 2017 before restructuring or release.
If Romo plays ok for most of the remaining season but breaks another bone, then he is not worth a 1st round. He could be backup or be traded for 2017.
If Romo stinks it up, then it is time to retire and no fans will blame the Cowboys.

Who are your 20 better QBs, Waldo? I'll do you a solid, just list the teams.

The fundamental problem is how I view Romo's health.
Not only do I think Romo cannot stay healthy, I am not sure he will get up from the 1st hit when the guy lands on him.

If this is my evaluation of him, then only QBs I would not rate ahead of Romo is SF, Arizona, Jets, Browns, and possibly Commanders. They simply have 0 upside while there is still a chance Romo comes back and stays healthy.

I am not counting the Rams because they are not playing their #1 pick and of course Brady has not played yet.
We shall see how Romo fares when he comes back.
I hope for the best but expect the worse.

Regarding your 2014 #1 ranking, it would have been scary to see how Brady would have played with the same resources.

But Brady didn't play with the same resources (he is the best in the league, I'll give you that, and it's not even close)... Romo's 2014 was the best, better than Rodgers, better than Brady. Give our guy his just dues.

If we're gonna play the unavailability card, than Romo would rank dead last, as a team without a QB has no QB -- but that's no fun.

If Romo is able to sustain continued physicality from opposing D's, he steps in and is better than 20-22 starting QB's in the league. If the narriative is injury, and we base our rankings off of injury, well, right now (admittedly), I got nothing.

Romo pre-2014 - Top 5
Romo 2014 - number 1
Romo without 2015-2016 injury - top 8
Romo with 2015-2016 injury - top 8

Yeah, I can do it, too.
KJJ loves to set up false parameters and then move them to fit his narrative

Anybody that is talking rankings or trade value is obviously talking about a healthy Romo....but he'll rank Brady who hasn't played this year and Cam who is out with a concussion....have some standards

On the play before Romo broke a bone in his back he was easily a Top 8 QB in the league
When he comes with his broken bone healed, he is still a Top 8 QB....he is no more likely to break a bone than any other QB in the league....any rankings will involve ROS

If he plays 8 games and looks like 2015 Peyton then we will adjust....but I expect to see 2014 Tony with this OL and RB

Amen, Bkight. These dudes can't get past having a Romo that comes in and plays. They don't give him the chance of day. Whatevs, but these "there's 15-20 better QB's in the league" posts are pure idiocy driven by angst that they haven't had their dude since 2014 (yes, I'm calling them closet "R"omo's) :D

We are in agreement.
The little stuff is in the semantics, like overall passing offense vs qb ability.
Like I said, wish for the best but prepare for the worse - but we have Dak.

We have Dak, but Romo is great. He's better, and it's not even close, at this point in their careers.

Don't be obtuse, Waldo, you seem like a smart chap. I understand being driven by emotion. This is our Cowboys, I get it brother.
