Or you could argue that he missed too many tackles leading to alot of extra yards, wasn't excellent in coverage and got alot of "fly ball" interceptions. Maybe that's all it takes to be #2 in the NFC, I don't know for sure. I'm not saying he's bad, just I'm not as enamored with him as most.
I disagree with pretty much every criticism you made. Just my take from watching the games. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out when the stastical analyses come out this summer.

What's disappointing is thar Roy Williams is ranked #5, and fairly so. It's disappointing because he's paid and coddled like he's better. And although top-5 in the conference is good, Roy should be better than #5. Hopefully he climbs a few nothes this season.

I understand this feeling, but believe it is part of the problem when it comes to Williams. Our expectations are so high that being the fifth-best safety out of 32 in the NFC just isn't good enough.

We watch Roy give up a reception in a game or a couple of receptions and he had a bad game. Or miss one tackle in a game, and say he can't tackle.

Now, I know TSN's ratings don't mean much, but it seems to me that we give him more flak than he actually deserves. Yes, he could be better (and so could Hamlin), but as with most things in life, the bad memories linger longer than the good.

Again, I'm not saying Roy is just perfect the way he is. Just that those wanting to cut him or trade him can only see his imperfections. All I want is for him to work on his weaknesses and keep doing the things he does well ... well.

Fair enough. I don't think he was bad - I just don't think he was great. He played well last season. I couldn't say for sure how that compares to other free safeties.

Regardless of whether or not he's been overrated by Sportingnews or Cowboys fans, he's clearly an upgrade over what we had at FS for several years prior to him. He's no Woodson, but I'd be happy to see him sign a reasonable (market value) contract to stay here.

The missed tackles is really what gets me.Hamlin missed 3 tackles in the first Giants game alone.

Thats like getting kicked in the balls and then kicked in the stomach. I'd rather be kicked in the stomach than kicked in the balls. Just because he was an upgrade doesn't mean he is the end all at free safety.

First of all, I never said he was the "end all" (whatever that hyphenated cliche is supposed to mean) at safety. I'm pretty sure no one else has either. Secondly, to say that's like getting "kicked in the stomach and then getting kicked in the balls" is so completely ridiculous I shouldn't even be commenting on this....not to mention very drama-queenish.

If you're goal is to get a pro bowl player at every position, good luck with that. Oh wait...he is a pro bowler.

Maybe its time to put your agenda aside, and just be happy that we aren't arguing whether or not we're going to give up two or three 70 yrd+ passes a game next season.

He's the best thing we've had back there since Woody, and it'd be nice to keep him if possible. He's not as instrumental as a DeMarcus Ware, but few are.

He was pretty bad in all respects in that first game. But it was his first game in a new defense on a new team. Obviously that first game wasnt representative of his ply for the season.

Hamlin had been labeled as a liability in pass coverage coming out of Seattle. I was happy with his play on the whole last year and while he (and Roy) had missed some tackles, gotten out of position on some passes, etc., it happens to all players. I hope we can get him signed to a contract that pleases him and is still cap friendly. It would be nice to establish some continuity in the secondary.

There's no correlation between statistical analysis and safety play.

That does it, I'm leaving the treehouse and creating a Ken Hamlin Myth Thread! :)

Baby Jesus told Hamlin to take bad angles and miss some tackles.

Your thinking is flawed seeing how he is the best since Woody really isn't saying much those the my analogy is still a valid one. Him being the best since woody isn't saying considering who we have had back there and doesn't make him all of that he went to the pro bowl big whoop him and 12 of our other players there's a difference between being all-pro (Ed Reed) and making the pro bowl (ken Hamlin). Now he benefited from Phillips system more than anything and i don't think his ability is all that great.

I'm pretty disappointed.

I thought this would have been a much longer thread by now.

Putting Roy Williams at #5 is a joke. I still believe we should have taken Josh Barrett with that last pick, instead of Eric Walden. Walden was ranked the 58th best OLB in the draft by PFW.

Barrett was ranked #3 among SSs, but was in a virtual tie for #2 with Tyrell Johnson. Denver made out big time by picking Barrett with the 220th pick in the 7th rd.

The only reason I can see that Barrett slipped so far in the draft is that there was a rumor that he pouted his entire senior year because he didn't get along with new HC Dennis Erickson. I guess no one accounted for the strained pectoral muscle & quad contusion he was hampered with for most of the season. I doubt his teammates would have named him team captain, and given him the "Hard Hat Player" award for his work in the off-season if he was a slacker.

It blows me away that Dallas would risk 1st & 5th rd. picks for prima donnas Jenkins & Scandrick, and then take a pass at a player with the most phenomenal 40 yd. dash numbers at the Combine in the 6th rd. (Barrett is 6-2, 225 & ran the 40 at an amazing 4.36!)

When Roy boy takes off after this season, or worse, gets cut before it even begins, it sure would have been nice to have a player waiting in the wings with Barrett's talent.
