I can't see 31 teams passing on Ogletree again, after hearing all the positive reports, and seeing him against Tennessee

No way.

You'd have a better chance of putting Stanback there.

Nobody has film of him doing anything.

Let another team gamble on Stanbacks potential cause the clocks run out on him in Dallas. All these fans that are arguing for him on his potential are just scared of repeating the Jimmy Smith scenerio. All I have to say about that is let it go it always happens in the NFL and if thats the case with Stanback it just wasnt meant to be for him in a Cowboys uniform

We can easily keep both.

I don't know how 'easy' it would be, but the team certainly could if they chose to.

That said, if they're only keeping 5, my vote is for Ogletree.

Stanback has to fight to force the team to keep 6 at this point.

I barely even know what Stanback looks like.

Keep Ogletree.

Not easily, but it's certainly possible. I just don't see the point in keeping Stanback at this point. He wouldn't be the first guy with unrealized potential we let go for another guy with more visible talent, so why all this controversy now?

Here are my "must keep" players.

QB - Romo, Kitna, McGee [3]

RB - Jones, MB3, Choice [3]

TE - Witten, Bennett, Phillips [3]

WR - Williams, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Ogletree [5]

FB - Anderson/Crosslin (don't really care and don't think one is better than the other, but we need at least one of them) [1]

OL - Davis, Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Columbo, Free, McQuistan, Holland, Procter [9]

DL - Spears, Igor, Ratliff, Hatcher, Bowen, Saivii [6]

LB - Ware, Spencer, James, Brooking, Carpenter, J Williams, Butler, Octavian [8]

S - K Hamlin, Sensabaugh, M Hamlin, Smith [4]

CB- Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball [4]

ST- Folk, McBriar, Buehler, Ladouceur [4]

That leaves 3 roster spots for the following players that have a realistic chance of making the team:

Stanback

Dixon
Hodge
Watkins
Brown

I can't really see much of an argument for keeping 3 of those 4 guys over Stanback.

Nice post, theo. i agree with you, except I think another corner, regardless of who it is, is a must keep. If I'm choosing, Stanback, Hodge and Brown are the three.

You forgot Mike Mickens.

I'd take Mickens, Hodge and Dixon over Stanback, and that's before looking at other teams cuts.

Theo's roster breakdown was very good; but given the play of the three dbs so far this year, I would be hard pressed to keep any of them. Watkins is a personal foul waiting to happen. Brown's athletic but has shown the ability to play, Mickens has shown he can get beat deep. I think Mickens would make it to the practice squad. Hodge and Dixon have shown up in camp, albeit Hodge late after injury. If Hodge has shown the snap to make it as a nickel lb, I think that gets him in. If Dixon has shown up at NT at all, that gives the team some flexibility on the line.

Stanback, of course, has to have shown something as well, or I think the coaches are going to be on Jerry's case about this. The most worrying thing I have seen are the reports that Stanback has trouble catching passes low...ie, below his shoulders.

I agree. I just think the team needs a 5th corner.

Yeah, I forgot Mickens, who looked very good to me in the short pass defense game in training camp, but from everything we've read he gets burned constantly on deep routes. I don't want him even remotely seeing the field as a corner (this year) and I don't know that he would have much special teams impact to really warrant a roster spot. I think he could make it through waivers.

Also, you both have to remember that Smith is working as a corner as well, so you have both Ball and Smith as swing corner/safeties. With that sort of flexibility, keeping 9 defensive backs just isn't a necessity.

Dixon can sit another year on the PS. I'd take Hodge for his intrigue/project nature. I just don't see any of those guys DEMANDING spots over Stanback, thus my comment that we could easily keep both Stanback and Ogeltree.

A lot of juggling going on here, with an eye to who can be stashed on the practice squad, and who might still be sitting around, available, if an injury were to happen.

Looking at those guys, I would have to say that Stanback would be picked up by someone. Especially with the Saints, Dolphins, and other teams with ex-Cowboy coaches around. Watkins would probably go somewhere for his STs work, but no big loss. Some teams out there who want a 6th developmental WR would likely eye Ogletree. Not sure about Brown. Given the plethora of teams running/switching to the 3-4, I could see Dixon getting snatched up.

I agree that Ball/Smith working out as CB/S gives the Cowboys gameday flexibility. That way they have time to call up another db should someone go down.

I also would add Hodge to the roster. He should be a very good special teams player and I could see him one day becoming a good ILB. He's got the mental makeup and the explosiveness to be a player. Plus, he seems to have a knack for getting to the ball behind the line of scrimmage.

I would take him all day long and twice on Sunday's over Stanback. He just offers more to the future of this team, IMO.

You can have Hodge and Stanback on the roster, no problem. You'd still be able to add one of the following as well:

Dixon
Mickens
Watkins
Brown

My point being, originally, is that six receivers is still very much a likely option.
