Of course it's a spectacle. Were you looking for intellectual involvement from a fairy tale movie?
it's a bare bones soap opera in space (Which is what Lucas even labelled it) - Star Wars was essentially Lucas cash grab (also what he has said) after his passion project THX 1138 failed. Star Wars built itself off the back of nerd culture - frankly something I've come to despise since it is now everywhere.
I get WHY it was phenomenon, starting from geeks and nerds word of mouth (Critics disliked it initially) and the visuals brought in the larger audience. For it's time, it was a great looking movie. However, that's just about where my positives for the films end - the acting is poor outside of Ford's and the trilogy always seemed to box itself into a family drama rather than expanding within the mainline films.
If you want to watch a film by Lucas that had some passion behind it rather than a desperate (successful) attempt at money grabbing, check out THX.
