I am not saying it bombed at the box office, I LOVE Trek, IMO he ruined it. The second movie, was essentially Khan all over again.
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. You are right about the sequel. Abrams used the plot to re-enforce the Kirk/Spock friendship dynamic. <SPOILER> The alternate reality of Kirk dying was great in my book. However, I must be completely honest and say that I would have pissed if he had extended it into another The Search For Spock like sequel.

Partly by making one of the dumbest movies of all time ("Prepare the Red Matter!") (I didn't watch the second one), but mostly by turning Star Trek into Generic Sci-Fi Action Franchise.
Okey dokey.

Sorry dallas east... That last trek movie was awful.

Copying the best storyline of Khan. No imagination.

The Uhura/Spock thing.
The switch of Kirk and Spock screaming "Khaaaaaannnn".

The whole time travel thing, was pure laziness.

They could of done soooooo much better. I HATE when directors think too much, and want to try a different angle, but he did that, and went with the Khan thing. It was crap, I just hope he doesn't ruin this.

...I'm starting to get a Man Of Steel vibe on this thread.:)

It's cool. Domestic box office for Into Darkness was less than the debut movie and worldwide sales were more for the sequel than the original. Paid critics (courtesy of metacritic.com) enjoyed the original (83 out of 100) more than the sequel (78 out of 100). Metacritic users considered both films pretty good (a 8.0 out of 10.0 for the original and 7.9 out of 10.0 for the sequel). To me, it seems Abrams didn't entertain as many Trek fans as he may have hoped, but he's done a good job of re-igniting the franchise. That was my biggest hope and he succeeded (even though not with everyone :) )

sad thing is that the trek reboots could have been done right if not for the usual hollywood laziness. Making a wet behind the ears brat like Kirk permanent captain was beyond stupid.

The one thing ST always had going for it was that it was reasonably consistent and intelligent. Abrams threw all that out the window.

Hey, I'll admit I like the new ones, find them entertaining action movies.

Granted, I'm not a huge Trek nerd. I liked reruns of Lost in Space more as a kid. I still grew up watching reruns of TOS in the 70's and 80's, watching the first couple seasons of TNG, randomly catching other series and seen all the previous movies.... what Abrams made ain't Trek. Same names and such but that is it. Or at least it aint what Trek was.

That has nothing to do with what I said. I didn't care for same character as Star Trek wrath of khan is all.
Many didn't.

If you are gonna mash trek into old ideas then please include seven of 9 :)

My bad. My reply talked about overall appeal for the movie.

Many didn't like aspects of the movie, including certain characters, and many did. Safe to say, the movie did not enjoy universal appeal :)

That's what Abrams was shooting for.

Abrams created a ton of deviations from the original series and movies. The quick promotion you've pointed out is one of the them. It took the original Kirk ten years to make captain. Perhaps one of the few things Abrams copied was allowing Kirk to grow up in Iowa.

I actually liked the actor who played khan. Just would have preferred new villain "character". :)
