Starting FS-who's your pick

1. Beriault is a SS whose never played FS & spent his rookie season on IR. Don't see any way he legit contender for starting FS job. His best chance to make this team is a SS backup behind Roy Williams.

2. Willie Pile played better then expected for us per Parcells comments; in fact many times later in season he played FS instead of Davis--whatever the reason. But barring injury, don't see any way Pile makes the team this year. That's tough and he seems like good guy who just needs chance & time to develop but doubt Cowboys can give him that time.

3. Davis will be given every opportunity to start but exactly how does he develop his cover skills enough in the offseason to win the job? Not sure looking at films will do it; its more an instinctive/reactive position and Davis nature is to attack first. Think Parcells understands this & that's why Cowboys signed Coleman to inexpensive 1 year deal.

If Coleman shows he can get the job done, he starts & Watkins (whom Parcells called green during rookie minicamp) will have time to develop. Hopefully Watkins (whose got a chip on his shoulder cause he slide so far) works hard and learns real fast how to play FS in the NFL the way the Cowboys need. How soon Watkins can start depends on how fast he learns cause he sure has some good intangibles: height, jumping ability, desceptive speed, smarts & hard working & appears have driven personality to suceed. A few INTs in preseason games (and not too many mental mistakes which lead to big gains/TDs) could get him on the field earlier then many think but doubt he starts until much later in season. I just think he really needs to spend time in the Cowboys offseason weight conditioning program so he can bulk up and add the strength he supposedly lacking.

All of them will play and as far as the starter is concerned thats just a label. They will all rotate at times.

No one in this group looks like a huge favorite to me. I think Watkins has an excellent chance but not right away. I'll go with Coleman here to start the season.

im gonna have to go with justin beariult(?spelling?) especially if he has another preseason like lkast years. he is also very cheap against the cap(late round pick) so if he proves himself we would be able to keep without a huge cap hit

For all the new competition that's been added at FS this year, and despite the fact that Davis was considered the weak link in 2005, I think he'll be the starter there come opening day. I've just got a feeling Davis will step up a bit and the others aren't THE answer come opening day. So Davis holds em off.

for now...

I thought Berryray asked a great question....and deserved a poll...

Keith Davis' experience wins out
If experience is the deciding factor, its Coleman. If talent is the deciding factor its still probably Coleman, at least til the kid gets comfortable.

Agreed. Don't know much about Coleman but he's got to be at least a tad better than what we had. Don't get me wrong here. I like Davis....he's a gamer but I'm not so sure he has the FS mentality......yet?

Ever.

If Watkins blows the competition away, then I go with Watkins. If not, then I go with Coleman or Beriault. I think Davis concentrates on ST and so does Watkins.

Beriault starts in the base defense.

Coleman at first and then Watkins by midseason in the nickel/dime.

I'm also going with Beriault as the starter in the base defense. I don't see Davis being more than a below-average safety, which isn't to say that the others will be better, but at least I can give them the benefit of the doubt. Beriault offers more against the ground game, and can't be worse against the pass that Davis, imo. Watkins and Coleman can play centerfield in a way that Davis never could, and have more than enough speed to act as the last line of defense in the ground game. The only way I see Davis getting significant time is if Beriault goes down due to injury again, in which case he may be able to serve in a capacity that Coleman and Watkins can't.

I said Davis.

If Coleman makes the team he'll have to be the starter IMO. I say noway we keep 5 safeties on the roster, so that to me means it's between Beriault or Coleman for a roster spot.

I think Parcells will want to keep Beriaut if he can and will do so if Beriault shows enough to stay, and Davis or Watkins prove they can man FS close to as good as Coleman.

Ideally Watkins would suprise and win the job, but realistically speaking he'll probably need some time.

Coleman is the insurance policy in case noone steps up, but keeping him means one of the youngsters probably Beriault will have to go IMO.

Whoever BP decides is fine with me. I would rather not go with Davis based on what I saw last year. If I had to guess I would say Coleman or Davis. But BP's decision is more than good with me. I would prefer everyone stay healthy and whoever gets the nod actually earns it rather than win it by default.

I'm going with Keith Davis, I think he will have worked on his cover skills, he was always a hitter, he starts opening day, who is you pick and why??

:hammer: me too, Watkins is raw, and Marcus Coleman was just as bad as Killer last year, and is losing a step, I still remember Darren WOodson talking about Killer his rookie year, said he was the quickest he's ever seen anyone pick up the Dallas D playbook, and last year is where he struggled in, recognition, I think Davis is going to pick that up this year, and will do fine, but in the future however, my money's on Watkins

Davis on 1st and 2nd down, Watkins on 3rd. Coleman gets cut. Pile is cut. Beriault backs up Roy. All play significant special teams roles.

I think Davis starts the season but gets replaced by Watkins sometime during the year. His cover skills are almost non-existant and unless he learned to cover this spring he won't start for long.

what's missing in the discussion of Watkins, I hear size, speed, talent, but I'm not hearing about how smart Watkins is, he's a pretty smart kid, and I know Parcells called him green in mini-camp, but it's mini-camp
