Stephen Jones comments 2/28

This defense is like 5 drafts away from even being close to Seattle.

I didn't suggest otherwise. I've been complaining about defensive depth for years while everybody else has been blaming the play calling or whatever. But it doesn't change the fact that they came out last year and said the plan was to build a DL rotation through the draft.

Interesting yes, but it was more about the consistent pressure on the opposing QB then then it was about the actual sacks for us last year.
And why didn't the Giants produce more sacks? How could Oakland with Mack be dead last?

The point is you aren't guaranteed anything by spending huge in free agency, and success in numbers on the DL may be logical. We all want a 15 sack DE, but hardly anyone has that. Develop your young guys (Irving, Mayowa, DLaw, Tapper) and draft another DE and DT to add to the mix. Maybe we will get lucky and finally get a healthy year out of Dez and Crawford, too.

People forget he's the leader of the Oline. He's not perfect, but he doesn't need to be with a sturdy player like Dak.
Not going to defend him because I think he is a bum. But no more than Church. And Crawford.

But it is interesting how Free is a total bum that needs to be cut tomorrow, but yet, these others, well, they are just valuable.

The thing that is a problem with this team is that bums are allowed to hang around.

That is a talent evaluation issue. This organization has rewarded mediocrity and has avoided conflict (read: cutting players) if they can.

Mediocrity is accepted.

It is just funny how fans pick and choose the whipping boys.

Free is no Erik Williams, but he's been solid. He's always healthy and is the leader. That cannot be underestimated here with this group. Crawford is a bum...you're right. Awful.
The team has been hampered by top heavy contracts for years, with mediocre players splashed in between. The Romo's, Wittens, and Wares made us look good on paper, but couldn't carry everything. Bad contracts over and over, Ratliff the 2nd time, Crawford, Miles Austin, etc etc.

I hope thats all changing now.

The biggest step any organization can take is self evaluating correctly. You get rid of good players before they become average. You are not scared of change because you are confident in your plan and the ability to execute that plan.

You are right, we seem to be on the right track. But this is a very important offseason with some choices to make.

He absolutely is. The stats have been posted on this site numerous times. Amongst all RT's Free was in the bottom 3 when it came to pressures and sacks given up.

I don't think Free is a good OT vs. the pass.

But what about the other half of the equation?

Quite frankly I think Free is one of the better RT's when it comes to run blocking.

And nobody else can do that? Seriously? We couldn't find another tackle to run block and be lousy in pass protection?

Thank God the team finally came to their senses a few years ago and started running their franchise the right way.

The days of big spending in free agency seems like a bad dream.

Unless you have a complete grading comparison of all RT's in the NFL this conversation isn't going to go anywhere.
