"Well, first of all Tony's a competitor and obviously all competitors want to be the very best they can be, they want to play, they want to start," Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones told 103.5 The Fan on Friday. "Any athlete who's played a sport they want to contribute and certainly he does.

"At the same time Tony's the consummate team player and I think if it meant as part of the process with Tony going into games as a backup then, I don't want to speak for him, but my guess would be that he would."

I know he's questionable for this game," Jones said, "but we'll determine that at game time and at some point if we do feel that he's ready to go then he'd certainly go into the game as backup."

Ok so this means tony will suit up for pitt game? It would be better to have him for bkup over sanchez.
They are saying bkup, so I am assuming that means if dak is hurt tony would come in, but not if dak isnt hurt.

as a backup then, I don't want to speak for him, but my guess would be that he would.".......... so he said this without talking to tony first ???? lol
thats not good.

That makes me think it's gamesmanship. If they really intended to suit him up against Pitt, I have to think they would have talked to him about his role by now.

I think the whole situation is shady. The only reason they don't just name a starter is so if Dak flops, they can jump to Tony without looking stupid. And the reason they don't put Romo in is in case he is rusty. The Jones are proving that they only care about not getting egg on their face. Otherwise they would name a starter

I wonder if it's just that Jerry, Stephen, Jason Garrett, and maybe Linehan just aren't on the same page with who to start and when, and have all dug their heels in. Jerry did say they were never going to get this sorted out, so maybe that is why.

This is just a leading question asked by the nimrods at The Fan... no one with the Cowboys has talked about Tony in terms of being a backup (or even the starter, really), just in terms of being healthy and ready to go. If they had asked "will Dak accept going back to the bench as a backup" then Stephen would likely have answered similarly and people would be trying to run with that as well.

I would honestly feel comfortable with Romo as the back up QB, even if he is the highest paid in the league. I like Romo how ever with how great Dak has been playing so far I don't think it would be in the coaches or the Jones best interest to switch now unless Dak tanks or gets seriously hurt. In a back up position we would have arguably the best in league with Romo

Dak has been named the starter against Pittsburgh.

I hope Romo is the backup because Sanchez does nothing for me. I don't want Dak getting hurt and going to Sanchez. It would be a relief if Romo is the back up, then I won't cringe everytime Dak takes a big hit.

I see a Cinderella story already - Dak gets injured in week 17 @ Philly and Tony comes into the playoffs and wins Super Bowl LI and retires!!

Then Dak wins the next one.

More because if you're gonna go with Dak, go with him. Don't make him look over his shoulder and risk hurting his confidence.

I'm the biggest supporter of putting Romo back in. Maybe they have made a decision and informed the team but if they have not, they themselves run the risk of ruining the chemistry they keep talking about.

I'm at least appreciative of the fact that Stephen is coming forth with the nitty gritty about what we might expect going forward. It's considerably better than for him to explain that than to parrot his daddy's ramblings about it being a "tough decision" and such. Thank goodness, someone finally came forth with a straightforward answer.

As a part of the process. Go into games as a backup.

To me, it sounds like they plan on Romo regaining his starting position.

I like Romo's deep pass precision vs Dak's deep pass. I think Dak needs to get much better at the deep pass. I would like to think maybe Romo can come in for some parts of the game and do a few deep passing routes.

Making him a backup is the ultimate disrespect. Honor, Loyalty, Sacrifice.
