Stephen Jones "guesses" Romo would be open to backup role

I have not been impressed with the communication from the top brass of this team. JJ is talking about this, now Stephen, while JG just continues with his "focus on today" mantra. They need one mouthpiece for the organization--- and then they need to all be saying the same thing.

Too many chefs in the kitchen on this topic-- and it makes us look confused as an organization. IMO-- the message should be simple and clear:

1. We love Tony and are doing everything we can to get him healthy, and we believe he is one of the top QBs in the NFL.

2. We love Dak and he has performed beyond our expectations this season. We are in the midst of a historic run and a special year-- in large part due to Dak's play and leadership, so we have decided to honor him and let him play out this season as the starting QB. Romo will be the backup this year as his health allows.

3. We will evaluate Tony and Dak in the offseason and make the right choice for the Dallas Cowboys in regards to the starting QB position going forward.

Romo is the consummate professional.

That, at least, has never been in question.

the g bag nation for two weeks has been questioning that. They keep insisting romo will not dress if he is just the backup.

Everything possible has been called into question for Romo his entire career. 90% of it is not even thought of about other db's.

Inside the nfl said Phillip Rivers is a hall of famer without a super bowl ring.....Amazing how perception changes rational thought.

I think the whole situation is shady. The only reason they don't just name a starter is so if Dak flops, they can jump to Tony without looking stupid. And the reason they don't put Romo in is in case he is rusty. The Jones are proving that they only care about not getting egg on their face. Otherwise they would name a starter

You nailed it.

More because if you're gonna go with Dak, go with him. Don't make him look over his shoulder and risk hurting his confidence.
Or our chance at a historic Super Bowl run with two rookies leading the charge THIS YEAR.

You appear to be talking about the Romo of 2014. Even last year before the collarbone and this preseason, he did not appear to be right. He is starting to remind me of how Manning fell off.

Too small a sample size, to draw a conclusion as drastic as that, Alex. With all due respect.

And I'm a Dak guy, but still, c'mon, my dude.

Dude, I'm about as big of a Romo fan as there is, but he was complete garbage to mediocre last season in the four games he played.

SD, some of those games were games he had no business playing in. And you know it. He was rushed back to salvage a sinking season.

Let's not be disingenuous to make a point. As a Dak train conductor, I still will offer a balance to this debate.

I'm the biggest supporter of putting Romo back in. Maybe they have made a decision and informed the team but if they have not, they themselves run the risk of ruining the chemistry they keep talking about.
This "hurting Daks confidence" argument is bs to me. If Dak can't handle that, he can't handle being the leader of the Cowboys.

I think Dak can handle anything, and he's done nothing to even suggest otherwise. That said, I was an still am a huge Romo supporter, but it's Dak or bust for me now. And chemistry lasts until they lose.

As soon as Dak loses a game Romo will be back on the field.

He shouldn't. With all due respect to Romo, we need to see sustained sub-par play (and we've seen none yet) before pulling our rook phenom. Like 2 or more games of sub-par play (and I don't mean simply losing a game, I mean him showing rookie tendencies, that he largely hasn't shown for any extended length of time). I don't see it happening.

It shouldn't be delicate at all. Either make this Dak's team and inform Tony they're moving forward with the future of the franchise, or give it back to Tony. Either way, just make a final decision and stick with it. Both QB's are big boys. I'm sure they can handle either decision.

What I can't imagine is good for the team is this franchise QB-limbo we're currently in.

Great post, SD. :)

Love Dak... rookies can win games yes but they don't win Super Bowls. As we get closer to the playoffs, things will start to happen.

This isn't the 1st time I have heard that opinion on this board and I believe it to be fraudulent. Dak is unflappable and has knocked down everything placed in front of him.

The beauty of our offense is that it is finally back to the ground & pound clock munching offense I so desperately wanted to sustain after Demarco left.

Dak won't have to pull a Favre.

I can't imagine how delicate this situation is. Tony has been my favorite player for 10 years, but the thought of them taking Dak out gives me anxiety. I trust this team right now which is something I haven't been able to say for years. Even in 2014 I was always nervous we were one game away from reverting to old ways. At the same time, it will definitely be tough to see Romo on the sidelines as a back up, knowing how much it must kill him inside. Of course he is the ultimate professional, but you can't help but feel for a guy that has put his heart and soul into the game and has not entirely fulfilled his dream. It's going to be an interesting couple weeks.
I feel almost exactly the same way. I'm very torn. I do feel better for him knowing he has a basketball court in his house, but it does still bother me that he may not get to experience this great run.

IF Tony can return to form, he has the experience and if you think that won't be needed for a SB run you're kidding yourself.
If you compare 2014 Romo to 2016 Dak Prescott: (both years featured similar good running games)
Romo completes more passes and throws more TD's.

Romo's touchdown percentage is 7.8% vs. Dak's 4.8%
Romo's completion percentage is 70% vs. Dak's 66%

They just haven't come out and said that they are not in any rush.

I don't think the inconsistent message is anything new. Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Garrett are constantly contradicting themselves.

I can't really understand why a lot of people are bothered by this and want something definitive stated publicly.

I really do not care who is QBing the team as long as they are winning. If the brass is taking that approach, seems fine to me.

These are just static numbers. They really are not relative to how Romo would fit, right now, with the style and tempo which the team is playing.

Romo comes back, a big chunk of what has got the team to this point is gone. The offensive structure will change. Some will say for the better, I am skeptical.

He was good against NY and Philly (Should have been 4 TDs to 1 Int in 6 quarters). He was mixed vs. Miami.
