Stephen Jones on Rolando McClain's nagging injuries: "At the end of the day, we think that comes with it. It's going to take some time."

Stephen Jones says he's not concerned about Morris Claiborne’s durability. "I fully expect him to stay up the full season."

RT @RainerSabinDMN Stephen Jones on Tony Romo: "He had one of his best years ever last year. And I expect him to improve upon that."

Stephen Jones told @RainerSabinDMN "it's conceivable" that the Cowboys could place Matt Johnson on IR for the third straight year

Rainer Sabin @RainerSabinDMN · 51m
Stephen Jones on Tony Romo: "I know Tony and I know he only gets better with age in terms of what kind of quarterback he’s going to be."

That would be crazy if they put Johnson on IR again.

It would. I don't think it happens. It does sound, though, like there might have been some progress in diagnosing his issue last week. If that happens, and it's real progress, I can see them considering an additional allowance of time. Still think it would be unlikely, though.

If nothing else, I'd like to see them have figured it out and see the guy in that last garbage preseason game, though.

If they want to put Johnson on IR, I don't see the big deal. It's not our money nor does in any way does it limit the Cowboys roster.

I'm not really up on Johnson and do not know much about him, but, what is the deal with keeping him around for so long without playing? What has he ever done?

Just a 4th round pick who's been consistently hurt.

If you look at his college highlights, the kid could be a potential deep-safety.

Hey, if he gets cut, he gets cut. If they Cowboys put him on IR... It's not a big deal either way IMO.

OK, this post is really just about a general concept. I don't really care what they do with Matt Johnson. I don't need to know that he's not worth the trouble because that's not why I'm posting this.

They should cut him and bring him back if he gets healthy. There is a problem in that if they give him an injury settlement, then they can't re-sign him for the amount of time that the injury settlement is based on. They could probably work something out with his agent such that he agrees to waive an injury settlement and they will give him his full salary when they re-sign him. Parcells talked about this one time when he was here. I think it was a kicker and he basically said that the player waived getting an injury settlement because they told him they would bring him back when he was healthy.

Obviously, another team could sign him, but they would need to immediately put him on IR. I just don't see another team doing that. I guess it's possible, but it seems doubtful. The Lions did do it with Nagy a couple of years ago and the Pats might be planning to do it with Ben Bass, but those guys both played some snaps in real NFL games at some point in the past.

It's not like it's costing us anything. He has a low budget contract. Wouldn't hurt anything. If we cut him, and he gets healthy with another team, and starts contributing, the people yelling "Cut Him!" will be the first to complain. If it doesn't hurt us roster/salary wise, then why not IR him until they can find the source of his hamstring problems.

That's a good idea, too. Even if he gets snapped up, it's not the end of the world, and you'd think he's probably in a situation where he feels indebted to the team and the organization and would work with them to get even another shot at the roster.

I am intrigued with this player. It's like the Beriault guy a few years back where you just suspect he could probably play if his body would just hold up. Stinks to lose decent prospects (include Holloman on that list) to bodily injury issues at what have been obvious positions of need for us on our absolute weak side of the ball.

Only it prolongs the "will he actually play, yuh know if he does he is really really good" dialogue to continue yet another season.

It also gives them the illusion that "if" he returns the safety position might be okay.

They need to understand how bankrupt that position is, not continue to cross their fingers.

I have never seen anything like what he is suggesting. Three consecutive years on IR for what are not really crippling injuries. He flips a hamstring here or there and nobody can figure out why.

Even if it was a first round choice, anyone recall that happening? I cannot.

Well he hasn't been put on IR yet.

I think it's more likely he's going to get cut.

I doubt the Cowboys brain trust is putting a lot of faith in Johnson's return.

I hate the PUP rules. It has always seemed wacky to me that a player that gets injured in training camp can't go on the PUP. Even if they could just go on it for a couple of weeks it would be really helpful because spots almost always open up after a couple of weeks into the season. There's a high probability that there are going to be injured players in training camp because it's a multiple week process. I realize that the 7 inactive players on game day are basically the short term IR, but there are going to be a lot more injuries in the many weeks of the preseason than there will be from 1 week to the next week in the regular season. It just creates this silly cycle where teams train players in their systems all off-season and then that player gets claimed by another team. Then the next week the team that lost a player to waivers ends up signing another player off waivers from another team and the process just keeps repeating and the players keep getting moved from one scheme to the next and one coaching staff to the next.

Teach me. Do the players get paid if on IR? If so, about how much?

The fact they are even talking about placing him on IR means they are considering it.

What braintrust does that with an oft injured player that has never done anything?

Answer, nobody. Except us apparently. It is embarrassing.

Hey if it bothers you, it bothers you.

There are going to be a variety of takes on the topic I would guess.
