The Mincey and McClain selections were early. He should be judged directly on how they work out.

Oh come on.....he's a master at finding talent. Do you realize how hard it was to put on the tape of Jared Allen, and then analyze that he has 11.5 more sacks in his career then Ware? That's tough to spot if you're not looking for it.

The guy is a genius! :p

I have nothing against Will McClay, but c'mon, the hype on him is getting a little ridiculous. We've signed two spares and a former Marinelli player.

It's what the fan base is left with. Pretend the head of the scouting department is some genius with hidden power within the organization.

But the McClay love pales in comparison to Marinellimania.

Whatchya gonna do, NFL, when Rod's nicknamed defensive linemen rush wild on you?!

Brother.

Wonder if Risen Star will actually give props about that............

Would I give props that our Director of Personnel had to see both the OL and DL reach debacle status before acknowledging they need players there?

No. My bar is set slightly higher. I would never so casually hand out props like that.

So what makes him "good"?

Mincey/McClain just making the team? Contributing in a rotation?

I am not in the scouting department so how would I know. The world circulating around the ranch and media is his good.
I am not so critical as to find fault yet

WOULDN'T THAT BE THE gm'S ROLE?

There's a difference between finding fault and anointing someone. I don't believe I've read anyone finding any fault in Will McClay. Some just haven't seen any reason to believe he's good or bad yet.

Let's be honest. Even if the Cowboys fail to put together quality draft classes going forward, can we really lay the blame on McClay? In this dysfunctional organization? How do we know how much his voice is being listened to? Maybe Larry Lacewell or Barry Switzer disagrees. Maybe another prospect shares a birthdate with the owner.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I do like hearing that DL AND OL our priorities.

We've been waiting years to hear that.

I like it too. Now prove it.

Take an OT if they are clearly the best player available. Take a guard.

The DL thing is pretty much a no brainer decision, I would hope.

These were not pluck off the scrap heap in May/June signings that were desperate for jobs.

That is a good thing. Both were pretty inexpensive signings, and like you said, if they contribute in a rotation then they were successful pick-ups.

Because they were signed early, perhaps we did overpay a tad... but it can't be much because neither are making very much period.

I find it encouraging that they did have them obviously targeted and clearly wanted to add them to the DL rotation. The club apparently saw something they liked in them and did what so many here have been screaming for the team to do: Sign some inexpensive role players that can come in and do their job in a rotation.

By not overpaying for age with Ware and Hatcher, and by signing Melton and hopefully drafting a starting quality DT/DE or two, they appear to be putting together a defense the way most of us wanted them to. At the very least it marks a drastic change in the way the team has been doing things with their own and outside free agents... and by any measure, that is a good thing.

Absolutely.

And the Director of Personnel is his chief assistant. He told us we were good along the DL last summer too.

You couldn't find two other individuals I respect less when the subject's football.

That appears a tad hoarse in regards to McClay. As I posted on another post I get my news from the news and I am not privy to any grapevine.
People like McClay and I haven't seen any thing to say otherwise. I thought the front four last year was looking good until the injuries.
Last year we drafted for offense. This year it's defense. That seems to be the cycle the last three years.
