At the time Claiborne was drafted, no one other than genius fans on Cowboys message boards thought it was a reach. It's easy enough to go back through the draft profiles and rankings and see that. He hasn't worked out to this point, but it doesn't mean that they didn't do their due diligence.

Claiborne was over drafted and wasnt bright enough to learn a college playbook. There wasnt a team in the NFL, except......, that would have drafted him before the 3rd round. Thats about the level he has performed at.

To contradict you, here is some pre draft info that year:

Mayock's top 100 has him 4th best player in the draft.

CBS Sports had him at #5

NFL.com had him projected at top 5 pick

Every team in the nfl would have drafted Claiborne in top 10. He was considered best defender in the draft that year......it wasn't just Dallas

We'll just have to wait and see. I'd just about given up on Claiborne.
He had looked very good in preseason. Has made great breaks on the ball and has been in tight coverage mostly. I don't think he will ever live up to number 6 pick but he is solid

Just wondering how exactly did they exceed expectations?
I know, right...I totally saw Dak being the best QB in preseason coming...who does he think he's fooling?

Due diligence?

They called him the "next Deion". If that doesn't denote lazy scouting, I don't know what does.

And that proclamation was without even having him in for a visit.

Hey, they put a lot of work into that one.

Besides the fact that he was lauded as one of the best defensive picks by everyone that year. But hey don't let that get in your way smh

That does not matter. At all. They didn't have him in for a visit. They mortgaged a draft based on what "every one said".

SMH

If "lauding" mattered, there would be no busts ever.

Alexander makes a good point, though...you would think "due dilligence" would at least include having the player in for a visit lol...

This from an article at the time:

"How did it come together? What kind of homework went into such a blockbuster deal? How much investigating had Dallas done with Claiborne in order to make such a move?

Well, almost none.

Assistant secondary coach Joe Baker spoke with him at the NFL Scouting Combine, and so did some Cowboys scouts. But there was no Valley Ranch visit, no private workout, no extensive tests. There was no warning. No extra medical attention, even though Claiborne has a torn wrist ligament that knocks him out of Organized Team Activities.

Nothing."

The thing is, the teams that did do thorough "due dilligence"--met with him, had him in for a visit, worked him out, interviewed him, etc, etc--passed over him when they had a chance to draft him.

The team that did none of those things traded away picks to jump up 8 spots and draft him.

Not sure this is something to champion lol...

By the way, I'm not sure a preseason where your franchise QB gets injured after 3 plays should qualify as "exceeding" expectations....unless you expected him to get injured after one or two plays, that is lol...

I would about bet more than that went into picking him.

Losing starting quarterback Tony Romo for the early part of the season is certainly a blow to the Dallas Cowboys.

But executive vice president Stephen Jones still has a good feeling about the team after training camp and the preseason, and is looking forward to getting the regular season underway Sept. 11 against the New York Giants.

The final roster cuts to the mandatory 53 players is Saturday.

“I really like our football team,” Jones said. “Obviously, no one is naïve when you lose your starting quarterback for some time, which it’s obviously going to be some time. That certainly wasn’t in our plans, you certainly hope something like that doesn’t to happen.

“Obviously, (rookie) Dak’s (Prescott) emergence makes you feel better about having that happen to you because there is a lot of optimism with Dak. Other than that, our team has exceeded our expectations in training camp and guys have performed well and done a really nice job for us. We really feel good about our team.”

The bigger argument was not whether Claiborne was the most talented CB in draft but was he worth moving up giving up our 2nd rd pick for. And were there greater needs we had with both of those picks.Even if Claiborne had developed sooner or reached closer to the expectations the pick and trade were very questionable. It wasnt only forum fans questioning the pick. Local beatwriters and sportscasters did as well.

2012 draft was just another poor decision in this era giving up or basically wasting our 2nd rd pick. There were other CB there in 1st rd without moving up. These poor decisions in 2nd rd this era are a symptom for the process taking so long for this rebuild to progress. As good as our 1st rd picks otherwise have been under Garrett the team has still missed the playoffs 5 of the last 6 years and are in jeopardy of missing again this year. Regardless of some of the talent that has been added the dynamics must all be questioned without better results thus far.
