Tantalizing for sure, I really wanted a WR. I thought we should've went out and gotten Desean Jackson. The guy can still blaze and is productive, would open up a lot underneath.
I don't think anyone wants a NYG like spending splurge but you have to sign real players every now and then, esp when you can't fill holes with quality draft picks.
I wanted a WR in the first and was willing to trade up to get him. We've been lacking a good #1 for a few years now, and it's finally catching up to us.

Carr and Clairborne - Players that were not 'worth keeping' are now in the top 10 in CB ratings.
Clariborne, given injury history, is understandable. But the steady though not flashy Carr was also discarded because he cost more than the famous Carroll, who has since been released.

According to Stephen Jones from http://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/201...se-free-agency-nfl-2017-draft-cap-allocation/:
“We are not going to get any better on defense if we just keep paying the guys we got,” Jones said. “What we have to do better on defense is we have to get pressure on the passer. And we have to make plays on the ball. We have to do that better. Obviously we haven’t been doing that with the guys we got. So how do you get better if you keep paying the guys you got who aren’t making plays on the ball a lot of money?”

Thus, 1 season after 13-3, the team has boldly turned over its defensive backfield starters. Instead of paying to keep them, the 2nd round, 3rd round and 2 6th round picks were invested into CBs and S, perhaps talented but inexperienced players. Furthermore, the 2nd round pick has barely gotten onto the field due to hamstring injury. The money that was 'saved' was invested in garbage pile FAs that have both since been released - Paea and our favorite Carroll. These bargain FAs were released along with Thornton the prized FA from 2015, combining to count more than $10 million against the sacred salary cap. How much more would it have cost to keep the steady Carr instead of questionable Carroll??? The Cowboys based their FA approach on their 'unique' ability to capture value in players that other teams do not - partly because of legendary coach Marinelli's ability to turn lead into gold.

In a year eerily similar to 2015 after going 12-4 when a top RB was not kept because of a couple million and that anybody could get 1000 yards behind the Dallas OL, the defensive backfield was completely revamped by the team. Another reason these CBs were released - they can only play man and are lost in zone coverage. DC Marinelli's brilliant tampa defense requires zone coverage so the DBs can play 10 yards back from LOS. If the player does not fit the brilliant scheme, they are garbage and must be replaced.

As provided by @SeanLee50 :
Carr - 35 tackles, 3 picks (is it not amazing the player that does not make plays at Dallas is making plays now?)
Claiborne - 31 tackles, 1 pick
Church - 46 tackles, 1 Sack, 1 pick
McClain - 19 tackles, 2 sacks
Dunbar - 5 carries, 31 yards
Escobar - out of the league
Wilcox - 12 tackles, 1 pick
If this was a courtroom, your post would be the summation argument of why we need to reload the coaching staff. Consistently playing a specific scheme rather tha making some allowance for the players actual skill set and experience begs the question: why sign Carr?

Two points:

1. Those players are playing much better this year. That generally says scheme/coaching.

2. If you know you aren't going to keep certain players because their contract is up, then you might want to draft their replacement the year before. That way you don't have to start rookies (let alone several of them).

Standard short sighted arragance from the FO.

carr was originally signed for the previous DC.
if u r asking why carr last year, well he was a relative bargain who rarely misses games and is a decent but not flashy player.
essentially:
1. outdated scheme
2. inflexible unimaginative coaches who cannot/will not make adjustments, whether in-game or overall.
3. pompous management who make self-defeating moves based on bad advice on coaches

Crazy idea. 2018 3-4 front 7:

RDE - Irving
NT - FA
LDE - Collins

ROLB - Gregory
RILB - Smith
LILB - Lee
LOLB - Lawrence

Swapping back and forth from 4-3 to 3-4 is the dumbest thing teams do. Both schemes can and have won. There are good coordinators available for both.

Lawrence is not a LB in any scheme.

I saw Church make a pick yesterday, I have seen Carr play well for the Ravens, Mo. Claiborne has been hurt for the Jets, but has played well when on the field. Of all those players,I though Church would be kept, I was really surprised they didn’t resign him. The defense has a lot more problems than just the players, same for the offense.

yes they are. coaching and talent will always trump scheme.
What do you think coaches are doing, drawing up plays in the clouds? Good coaching and schemes are like good leadership and management. Good coaches know how to get the most of their talent, and that involves schemes.

A window into management decision making:

Carr 4 years 23.5M 4M signing bonus 4M guaranteed
Clairborne 1 year 5M 2M signing bonus

Carroll 3 years 10M 3M guaranteed
Paea 1 year 2M 0.5M guaranteed
Thornton 6M cap hit spread over 2017 and 2018
Blanton 0.08M cap hit
D Moore 0.1M guaranteed

Here's a wild and crazy thought.

If you want a defense that attacks the QB and forces turnovers why not go out and get a DC who brings that type of defense?

I know. I just blew your mind Stephen with that outside the box thinking.
Marinelli needs to go, but you make it sound so easy to acquire a top notch DC.

well you can readily:
1. take the best DC out there by offering them HC job
2. hire someone like the Patriots OC and have him pick a DC out of Patriot non-OC coaches.

The Patriots OC has already failed as a HC. I would definitely take a look at their DC though. But the point I'm trying to make is if it was so easy to find a top notch DC as @Sydla was implying, every team would have one.

you could almost have your choice of successful DCs if you are willing to hire one as a DC. belicheat also failed as HC in his first try, at least I think he did. so i would rule not rule it out if he failed the first time, unless he was a total loser.

Ive been saying this. Heck I wanted Beckham the year he came out but never thought he would go that early from the mocks I was seeing. We definitely need another WR

and someday people will say Garrett was a failure as a HC in his first try. Hopefully that will be soon! Dilly, Dilly!
