Stephen Jones thread

you have to get the cap space before you can spend it. it's not like a loan at the bank. sorry, 401k"ers. next year will be the first time Stephen will have cap space since he's been here. some think the cap savings goes in his pocket. it does not. the patriots get by very successfully and are considered cheapskates. the difference is the excellence of the head coach. therein lies our problem. ours is a boob. our hc is jerry's pet kitty. Stephen would fire the boob in a minute if allowed to do so. think belichik couldn't do better with this team?

when Jerry is no longer cognizant (he may even have to be buried before his kids are able to make changes) and Stephen is actually running the "football operations" at the highest level-
it wouldn't surprise me if the Cowboys become more like the Raiders executively with Will becoming GM and Stephen maybe keeping his CEO position but more assistant and less 'Coach' Jerryish
remember Al Davis was as much (or worse) a meddler as Jerry

being that all 3 of Jerry's kids split responsibilities of running his empire, it's unlikely imo that Stephen would be anything like Jerry (especially power-wise)
as for being cheap, that could be a culmination of years spent handling player contracts
maybe he sees numbers as the ultimate decider and doesn't fully appreciate the actual worth of the player, idk

I just hope it changes for the better because this isn't working

Jerry already has a will in place that ownership transfers to his three children and it remains that way for his grandchildren.

Being a family man, I respect that about Jerry. But he could do it a lot better without having to screw the organization in the process.

Marquee guys dont want to play for the Joneses anymore, its a different era.

Dak is absolutely awful right now but we have seen this guy play clean efficient football with a nack for making big plays at critical times.

After Kansas City last year that guy has disappeared. Where is he? Where is that Dak Prescott?

I refuse to believe the guy we saw for 20 something games to start his career is just gone now and we are left with what he is now.

It isn’t like it hasn’t happened before.

the marquee guys all want top dollar and don't care where it comes from. kirk cousins didn't go to the frozen tundras of Minnesota for the weather. he went for the money. leveon bell is willing to leave Pittsburgh for the money. jimmy graham jumps from team to team for the money. it's always about the money.

Pros

-Drafted Martin over Manziel
-Has given the power back to his scouts and drafts have been moderately better
-Has managed the cap well
-Is responsible for the youth movement in this team

Cons

-Released DeMarcus Ware (who eventually won a super bowl) and
made it clear he wanted to stay and restructure

-Refused to Pay DeMarco Murray (could go either way)

-His decision along with Garrett to go Dak over Romo. Jerry wanted to
give Romo the reigns back

-Was they key figure, along with Linnehan, to get rid of Dez Bryant

-Virtually made no effort to build key weapons in free agency or via trade

These are things we know! How would you rate him so far. Personally, I'm not convinced he's better than Jerry. Jerry at least took risk in trying to build a football team. Jones plays it very close to the chest.
I actually think every con you listed is a pro. Even the Romo one. Not because Dak is the answer but because we weren't going to win a ship with Romo anyways.

Only mistake i see on the list...

I understood that, my hope is that they basically maintain their current roles without being defacto GM(s) or take a backseat entirely
I have zero problem with them owning the Cowboys

I can't wait until Stephen trades up to draft his son to play QB.

can you imagine that nightmare though? and what if he's meh
what OC would step into that situation I wonder

I don't believe that at all. I've never seen any evidence for such a thing.

I believe Stephen's to the point where he likes his puppet as much as Jerry. Stephen believes he's a genius and doesn't need any resistance from his coach.

Like pretty much all of those.

You forgot the worst one he did:

NOT FIRE GARRETT

Stephen Jones is just as inept and why would anyone expect otherwise?

The interview for the position he now has within the organization must have been fiercely competitive, right? After all, this is a critical decision as a GM. You are accountable as a GM for your decision so I''m sure Jerry scoured the football world for someone with elite credentials, a proven winner at the top of the NFL world.

What an amazing coincidence that it should happen to be his son. Even more amazing was the fact that Stephen had never been a part of any professional football organization.

However, Stephen qualified in the only area that Jerry was looking at, his genetic structure. I mean, be serious. In 1989, if Stephen had applied for his position with any other team he would have been laughed out of the building.

Why would we have expected any more than the "silver spoon" approach to Jerry. His first job out of college was Vice President of an insurance company.....owned by his father.

Just like Garrett

I'm happy to see that so many of you are finally smartening up to this ludicrous pipe dream that Stephen is going to be some complete 180, football genius compared to his pappy.

He's not. He never was, and never will be. He's his father's son.

Jerry made this observation:
...the NFL is "getting soft" with the penalties.

"It's real important that pro football distinguish itself as a very physical game relative to the game at college, relative to the game at high school and amateur," Jones said Tuesday. "That's very important. Now, where to find that balance, that's one thing. But when we get to a point in the future in time, you'll see pro football where they've put the 6-ounce gloves on and where the men are playing."

Now, where do Jerry and Stephen stand, on 10 straight games with little to no passing effectiveness by their team?
