Stephen Jones thread

tank and zack probably don't agree with you. having a 401k and a checking account doesn't make one a financial genius.
Yea, he resigned a couple but has released many more.

I’d argue he bundled managing the best team we’ve had this era in 2014 and 2016.

I don't agree. the number one problem, imo is our lackluster hc. and he's jerry's pet kitty, not Stephen's. once Stephen is free to get rid of garrett, the ship will be fine.

Pros

-Drafted Martin over Manziel
-Has given the power back to his scouts and drafts have been moderately better
-Has managed the cap well
-Is responsible for the youth movement in this team

Cons

-Released DeMarcus Ware (who eventually won a super bowl) and
made it clear he wanted to stay and restructure

-Refused to Pay DeMarco Murray (could go either way)

-His decision along with Garrett to go Dak over Romo. Jerry wanted to
give Romo the reigns back

-Was they key figure, along with Linnehan, to get rid of Dez Bryant

-Virtually made no effort to build key weapons in free agency or via trade

These are things we know! How would you rate him so far. Personally, I'm not convinced he's better than Jerry. Jerry at least took risk in trying to build a football team. Jones plays it very close to the chest.
No matter what you want to believe, nothing is done without JJ approval, stop believing SJ has some magical power to make decisions with out JJ's approval. People in the organization express their views, JJ weights it all and makes the final call. That is how it works and why the team is is mediocre year in and year out.

Your certainly entitled to your opinion but Jerry isn’t giving up his total control. Given that what’s your Plan B?

Gotta love how fans speculate about what goes on behind closed doors. No one outside the organization has any clue who is making what decisions.

And even if you want to arbitrarily give Stephen credit/blame, it’s an indictment on how poorly run the entire organization is if we have different memebers of the FO pulling in different directions. If what we have (it ain’t much) can’t come to common ground the Cowboys are in more trouble than we all think

if he is true to his word and would really hire a gm I hope he takes over tommorrow

I don't see getting rid of Dez as a "con", and apparently neither does the rest of the league.

My issue there is thinking Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson were sufficient replacements.
Who would you have signed?

Can't fully assess Stephen Jones performance as a GM until he gets his own HC. Jason is all Jerry.
I fully agree. I will give my two cents on Stephen once he brings in his own coaching staff and I will evaluate him fully once that happens. We've only seen a fraction of Stephen's influence.

it wasn't for lack of effort. he tried hard to sign Sammy Watkins. chief's offered about the same money. but Watkins had to choose between dak and mahones. seems Sammy chose wisely. not Stephen's fault.
I give him a negative point for trying to pay Sammy Watkins 16M per year.

Sammy Watkins is a life time NFL underachiever. He is playing on the best offense in the league and his stat line looks way too close to Cole Beasley's.

No thanks.

I like Stephen. I can't wait for the day he gets full control of running the club. we weren't getting anywhere with ware. made no sense to continue to pay him. murray was just asking for too much. eagles overpaid. how'd that work out for them. Stephen has been fixing the cap he-ll his dad put us in. and he's done very well at it. next year we will finally have some good cap money. then we'll see how he plays the free agency game. getting rid of dez was a no brainer. he's the only one with the fortitude to do anything about it. I suspect his next big move will involve a hc and an oc.

We're sitting on 12 million in free cap space and we couldn't be bothered to bring in a backup QB? Bridgewater signed with the Jets for like 500k guaranteed or something ridiculous.

Is there a team in the league with less total experience than our 3 QBs?

Nope
This is the thread where we pretend he is "a football guy" because "he grew up around football " and will be great when Jerry goes into the great beyond

Yeah he will point to his decades of experience as a Director of Personnel for why he's qualified to be the GM when the time comes.

its a common phrase to use when a QB leads a team. Hate

I do hate it, because it's absolute ********. A QB can improve his team's chances or hurt them, he doesn't win. And if there is a better player, who'd improve the team's chances more, you play him. As soon as someone starts to delude himself into believing that Dak won, it makes sense to keep him in there. If you pretend it's an individual sport, you play the winner. If you realize that it's a team sport, you play the better player - which improves the team's chance of winning.
