So
I think it is not all that intelligent to disclose how you are feeling in regards to contract negotiations through the media, especially when you start laborating that the player was more productive and reliable in this past season when they really weren't.

On paper, McClain started more games in 2014, had more tackles, more INTs. The only thing he did much differently was the TD against Miami and of course was so reliable, he started the season suspended.

Kind of weakens your negotiating position and a smart agent throws that back in your face.

So when you approach someone to tell them you would like to sign them, that doesn't give them the same leverage? Obviously if get to negotiations you are implying you are interested in signing that player. Are you suppose to tell them your not interested in their services but would like to negotiate a contract?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Talking specifically about negotiating with the use of the media. They can say whatever they want behind closed doors.

Wow ok, let's keep the dude who never shows up for TC and one toke from a year's ban over the guy who was late twice to meetings.

Ro > Laurinitis

Ro is also younger.

Based on what? Projection that McClain has never come close to meeting nor shown the desire to work to achieve? Based on probability to retire once he's got his guaranteed money? Based on snaps per game missed due to injury? Based on potential to miss time to suspension?

Let me lay some facts out for you:

Laurainitis has 853 tackles in seven seasons. That's 122 tackles a season. All while never missing a game. He also has 16.5 sacks and 10 interceptions.

McClain has 412 tackles in five seasons. That's 82.4 tackles a season. All the while, he's retired twice, never played 16 games and been suspended for substance abuse. He has 9.5 sacks and 4 interceptions.

Oh tell me again about the greatness of McClain.

I would never say Laurinaitis is the future at MLB for the Cowboys, however neither is McClain and I would trust Laurinaitis on a short deal far more than McClain on any deal.

I hope they resign him.

I watch the games and yes I saw some stinkers... but I also saw many where the guy was pretty solid in the middle.

Just for grins when it comes to linebackers, here's where PFF rates them:

Lee 3 out of 97 (starters) - Just for grins... Kuechly & Barr were #1 & 2.
Mo was 28th.
Hitchens was 69th.

For some other notables:

Jamie Collins was 5th
Hightower was 7th
Burfict 11th
Brandon Marshall 12th
Irvin was 15th
Dansby 25th
Bobby Wagner 30th
Jasper Brinkly 36th
Clay Matthews 40th
Navorrow Bowman 51st
Tulloch 54th (no wonder Detroit was letting him go)
Greeway 61st
Shazier 64th
Bruce Carter 68th
Laurinaitis 83rd (again no wonder the Rams let the guy walk)
Kiko Alonso 91st

No way would I get rid of Mo for Laurinaitis.

It seems like PFF gets quoted when it fits arguments and torn down when it doesn't. For that reason I stopped relying on them a long time ago and started reviewing the tape myself.

What was McClain's actual grade, if you don't mind my asking? And then a frame of reference for guys graded out near him?

Looking at their list of linebackers and how they have them ranked... it certainly passes the "sight-test" for me.

The first number is their overall ranking. The second is their overall score. The third is their run defense score, the fourth is their pass-coverage score and the fifth is their pass-rush score.

Karlos Dansby 25 72.0 36.2 87.6 74.7
Brooks Reed 27 71.5 71.8 70.3 60.0
Rolando McClain 28 71.1 43.8 83.3 75.6
Manny Lawson 29 70.6 65.1 78.3 44.8
Bobby Wagner 30 69.9 81.3 55.8 85.6

James Laurinaitis 83 39.3 20.6 51.1 45.4

Right, but Stephen had they would "like" to have him back. There was nothing desperate or definite about that statement. Nothing like we "have to", "love to", "must sign". It was a just a on the lines of extending an olive branch.

I'm on board with re-signing Ro McClain. The deal has to be incentive based and have built in "outs" in case he violates the substance abuse policy again. I believe he and Randy Gregory now face a potential 10 game suspension should they fail another test.

McClain seems to have settled in at Dallas and may have found a home. He is a solid player and flashes playmaking ability. He also allows Lee to play the Will as a Pro Bowl level.

I am pretty puzzled at his comments about McClain.

He looked fat and disinterested at times in 2015 versus 2014.

There were some plays where he was just horrible in run defense.

Ohhhh. You want solid players.
Well, for Sir Jones that might be a novel concept: players who are fit, interested most of the time and show skills, consistently.
Get out of here, bloke! Sir Jones prefers the status quo -- all the time.
