So when you approach someone to tell them you would like to sign them, that doesn't give them the same leverage? Obviously if get to negotiations you are implying you are interested in signing that player. Are you suppose to tell them your not interested in their services but would like to negotiate a contract?
I think it is not all that intelligent to disclose how you are feeling in regards to contract negotiations through the media, especially when you start laborating that the player was more productive and reliable in this past season when they really weren't.
On paper, McClain started more games in 2014, had more tackles, more INTs. The only thing he did much differently was the TD against Miami and of course was so reliable, he started the season suspended.
Kind of weakens your negotiating position and a smart agent throws that back in your face.
