The eagles are proactive in signing players to extensions while there is still time left on the original contract. The player makes more money earlier and the team still has an out with manageable dead money after two or three years. Wentz got a 4 year $128M extension with two years left on rookie deal (4th and 5th year option) and the Eagles were able to spread the extension over a 6 year period with no void years. Ultimately, the eagle took a $34M dead cap hit in 2021 but were able to move on. Jerry brilliantly franchised tagged Dak in 2020 for $31.4M and then signed him to a a 4 year $160M contract were money was pushed out into void years after 2024 to keep the cap manageable from 2021 to 2024.

In the past two years, the Eagles have handed out big contracts/extensions to Hurts, AJ Brown, D Smith, L Dickerson, etc. And this after they gave out a bad contract to Wentz that they were smart and got out of. And then this offseason, after realizing what they had wasn;t good enough, they hit FA hard and signed Huff (which in fairness looks to be a bad signing) and Barkley (which looks to be the best FA signing).

They don't make excuses. They just work the system.

Stephen's sad stories should be disallowed by anyone who cares about the Dallas Cowboys' management issues. There's not a fan alive who isn't sick of reading about the Cowboys' FO failures to find winning ways. Perpetual incompetence will never be a forgivable excuse. Get a real GM.
