Because the June 1 designation was more beneficial than what they were getting as trade offers, I also think they were doing him a favor by letting him go early rather than later in free agency.

Yeah, if they waited after June 1 they could have then traded him for the same salary cap benefit this year.

many hated Free but free turns out was a lot better than most though when you see the alternatives' can see Steel being our Free, not great not HOF PB material but rock solid starter,,nothig wrong with that..

In complete fairness it usually takes OL-men a solid 3 years to get up to NFL speed.
The Elites are the Elites, but overall it takes time for that position to grow into what they can become.

Yeah I agree. I also think back to how we ran the ball behind Martin/Steele in those first 6 weeks. I know Zeke got his knee injury shortly after that and was less effective when Collins was healthy, but I was pretty impressed with how well they worked together to create holes in the run game. For me, the issue isn't that we cut Collins to save 10m, it's that we didn't re-invest at other positions along O-line.

you mean like him being 3rd in production, foot issues, disappearing from games, oh and missing those 2 games, and making 20mil and his cap savings was 16 mil and 2 draft picks to send him on his way? thats not enough?LOL

Yes they may have wanted RG back but not without protection, they knew they could have taken the clause out immediately upon RG taking offense to it and cleared it all up..they let him walk.. inured, suspended or not showing in the biggest Games. All 3 very similar in that way..
smith gone , Zuerlein gone, Jarwin gone, seems to me the FO decided none were living up to contracts and or their perceived talent.

i know some will say why not zeke then, because his deal is structure din way where it makes little cap saving to cut him and ton more to let him go than keep him..hes gone next season most likely.

Even with all the above issues….you have to admit it’s not the Cowboys MO to give up on guys in the prime of their career. They are more so known for hanging on too long….

Team is spoiled wanting elite o-lineman for all 5, Mccarthy is riding on Joe Philbin who will have a massive contribution to his success or firing this year he banked on this by keeping him.
