Stephen vs Jerry

I used to hope that Stephen would be an improvement over what we've had with Jerry. I've pretty much gotten over it now!

IMO, what many of our fans don’t understand about Jerry and Stephen is they are just not very good at free agency. On any level. They have been ok at drafting, thanks to Will McClay’s work,

This misunderstanding happens because if all a Cowboys fan does is listen to JJ and SJ you would think they know what they’re doing. I mean they talk a lot. They have weekly radio shows with soft ball questions lobbed at them each week to tout how good they are. But if you put them in context with REAL GMs that know what they’re doing, it’s actually quite sad.

Here are some example of GMs that get things done to make their franchises capable of winning in the playoffs:
  • Rams GM Les Snead- hired Sean McVey at 30 and has put together two different rosters with two different QBs that has allowed to be in 2 SBs in 4 years. Draft picks, trades and FA. And lots of fans say, “Yeah but they will be in cap hell soon”. As they play for a championship and we don’t.
  • Chiefs GM-Brett Veach- he’s 44 years old and has been responsible for trading up to draft Pat Mahomes, completely overhauled their OL through FA in a way that didn’t kill their cap. They’ve been to 2 SBs and 3 straight AFC championship games.
  • Packers GM Brian Gutenkirst- since 2018, he has brought a bright young HC Matt LaFluer, and has overseen a complete overhaul of their talent, especially on defense through the draft and FA.
Ever heard of these guys? Probably not. Because they are too busy doing things real GMs do to make their team better each year. Like studying film, empowering their HCs, avoiding long radio shows and never holding press conferences in a locker room after a game.

Jerry, love him or loathe him, is a very successful businessman and has made himself and his family very, very rich….
Stephen, has achieved one thing in his entire life… that being Jerry’s son.
When Jerry does, eventually, die… the thought of Cletus running the show is extremely scary.

You're talking as if we've been a perennial championship team under Jerry's control during the CAP era.

Can't fault Jerry and his dedication to HIS team, however, the desire to win in the short term is killing us year on year due to the continual damaging restructure process.

If this season (cutting Jaylon) and the rumors of not bringing back all of the FA's are true (not that we have the money to) are true and influenced by Stephen then i'd argue he make be a more pragmatic influence on the team.

If Stephen is taking the ready made opportunity to reset the CAP in 2022 then it may be painful (DLaw and Coop), but with the cutting of Zeke in 2023 (and even possibilities reguarding Tyron) we are going to be in a strong position to move forward in 2023.

It depends on whether you want to be top heavy roster with big names/elite contracts to aging/injury 'stars' or we look at spreading that CAP to improve the talent through value per $.

This is a football forum and Jerry Jones has accomplished a lot in football. His teams have three championships and he’s in the Hall of Fame. He’s one of the most powerful people in the NFL. You claimed he’s a dreamer but you don’t accomplish what he has in football or outside of football if you’re dreamer. He owns the Dallas Cowboys and has accomplished what he has in football because he’s a doer. That’s not spit shining his shoes that’s just telling it like it is. We all have issues with the way he operates the team but that’s not going to cause me to downplay his accomplishments in the NFL.

You'd need to qualify that by adding .....'only one Championship in the CAP era and that was in the second year, followed by 26 years of just 4 playoff wins'.

The accomplishments indicate that Jerry succeeded when he could throw endless amounts of $ at the team, it could also be argued that he supported the CAP as he believed he could pocket more of the money whilst still putting a Championship team on the field......well one out of two aint bad.

Stephen really start in to bother me more than Jerruh. He always saying we love we what have and we love
Our guys. That’s cool you love the homegrown talent. But how can you says that and the. Want to release Lawrence and don’t even bother to resign Byron Jones. Just gone ahead and admit you love our cheap bottom of the barrell talent.

It seems to me Jerry and Stephen are complete opposite ends of the spectrum.....where Jerry likes to overpay players, and Stephen would rather not pay anything for a good FA. Could we have some kind of happy medium? o_O
Stephen is in charge of the salary cap. This is why he keeps Jerry in check. The contracts have restructures in place to off set the salary cap. The Covid 19 unexpectedly decreased the salary cap which had some effects to the way we do business. I also think, to the fault of the Jones; they waited to long to make up their mind on Dak, which caused QB contracts to increase, and them having to pay more.
