Its not successful because Jalen Hurts is strong. Its successful because theres 2 guys behind Hurts PUSHING HIM for the 1st down. Of course Hurts is strong, but he alone can't drive a DT back. Its 4 players at a given point of attack. The lead blocker, ball carrier, and 2 trailers who push. Everyone wets their pants over Hurts' power. Most any QB can execute that play if its successfully blocked
Then why don't they?

Nothing is preventing Dallas or anyone from running the same play. So why don't they?

This right here. Hurts has mutant leg strength. That play on 3rd and inches is pretty much unstoppable unless he has two sore hammys.

Gotta limit those opportunities
I think they will limit it themselves.

They went "all in" last year....but now he's gotta mega contract, I think they'll be fat more judicious with that play.

Last year, in ANY scenario, they were running that play. If it was 2nd quarter in a week 3 game against Cleveland and they were already up 14, they'd still run it.

This year, I think they'll raise the bar and use it in more important situations (goaline, game hanging in balance, playoffs, etc) but then on other plays of less importance they'll do something else.

Won't be surprised if they cut that number by 35 or 40%.

It's unstoppable because the dude can squat 1000 lbs.... but you just can't do it all the time. I mean he had 17 freaking rushing TDs. That's insane. I bet he'll end up with single digit rushing TDs this year

It's both things.... it's not like YOU could go do that if 2 NFLers were pushing ur tail.

It's the combination of two strong dudes pushing a guy that could get movement on a 300 lb DTackle all by himself even without the help.

You couldn't just plop Brock Purdy in the Eagles offense and see him do the same thing. It's why they didn't do it against us when we played them with their slob backup QB playing....cuz he didn't have the enormous strength

Exactly. Philly has the personnel to run that play. Others don't. Good for them.

Don't legislate a play out of the game just because some teams aren't capable of doing it

I'm looking for NFC East defensive coordinators to make that a priority #1 or close to it this training camp. And my Spidey sense says we're gonna start seeing back-up O-linemen employed on defense so that there's a better chance to neutralize the surge. Might even be the case that you take a back-up OL who distinguishes himself in Oxnard as your best D-lineman and give him a place on the 53-man that he otherwise wouldn't have been awarded.

Yes, no, maybe?

Josh Ball, we may have a real role for you yet, son.
This is what you get when an organization hires smart football mines, unfortunately the Boys are lagging in this department.

Im just dumb AI...and I have always thought that this was the best way to get a inch to 1yard gain for a first down.

It just makes sense. There is basically 4 guys pushing 1, maybe 2 guys forward. If you stack the middle on defense the offense can fake and exploit the hole you borrowed a guy from to stack.

You train your defense to focus on one area on the QB ...... the chest and shoulder area ....... everyone pushes as close to one spot as they can ........ lets see how long they run that play.

Philly should have a squat competition after the 53 man has been established every year...

The two guys with the strongest legs on the team are the pushers next to Hurts.

You load up to stop it because it is the easiest play in football. Everybody should be doing it. I hate when Dak turns around and hands the ball off 5 yards behind the LOS on 3rd and a yard or less!

You load up to stop it to force Philly to try something that takes a little more time to develope. Every other play takes more time to develope! Load up to stop it and hope they try something else, then do your job!!!
Thank you....ALMOST as dumb as running or pitching wide on 2 and 1 and ending up with 3 and 7. Tom used to call a pitch to Tony D wide on almost every 2 and short and the other teams sniffed it out almost every time.....drove me crazy!

Ok Ok...lets start an argument...

An argument without all the "you all just want to wussify the league" or "too many rules ruining the league" blah blah blah...

Why this short yardage play has not been implemented more throughout the NFL, I dont know. It seems very hard to stop especially with 2 thick strong guys next to the QB pushing. I know I have seen this before Philly started doing it...but no team seemed to stick with it like Philly. Weve seen the big lineman as running backs or blockers...but it never sticks. I suspect Philly gets two strong players(TEs? Lineman?) to put next to hurts instead of just fullback or running backs making it even harder to stop.

Is there world where if this design becomes almost 100% successful on short yardage they restrict this formation?

Im looking at it from a "4 guys pushing 1 or 2 guys" perspective. I get that both teams have 11 players on field and you have to counter. What if stacking is still not working for NFL defenses against this play due to other holes opening up such as too much field is left wide open for Dbacks to cover without holding receivers.

I never understood it. Executed well you have to have a combination of excellent DT talent and near perfect execution off the ball to have a chance to stop it. I ahve seen plenty of teams get off well and still fail badly.

Dak is a big QB and with our interior OL talent and size it makes a heck of a lot of sense. It could also be the answer to our short yardage questions now that Zeke is gone.

I think the main issue is Hurts has freakishly powerful legs, and he's built low to the ground. He could be top tier tailback.

Dak is too tall, as are many quarterbacks, to do it as effectively. Mahomes does it, but he always gets blasted with his helmet half turned around, so KC should avoid it.

It's a problem. Sometimes I think Philly could run it every play and March down the field at 4-5 yards a clip.

But I also know Quinn and others are working on it, and teams will learn to get their shots in low on Eagle players, including Hurts. How does a helmet in the side of your knee from a safety at full speed around the corner feel, buddy?

How would it be possible for a safety to have a running shot at his knee on this play. He is literally sandwiched inside his own teammates. I don’t see that as being very likely.
