From 50,000-watts of truth, accuracy and thoughts reserved for Scarlett Johanson, some sobering thoughts and comments about an expensive, aging almost-great athlete. Next up, Oy Vey Cajun from Richardson and Tri-City Bowling News.

Men, there are some truths that don't come easy. Like the time we found out Daddy drank beer at the bar. Or about Michael Irvin's taste when he first bought an expensive suit afteri signing with Dallas. Bitter truths. As bitter as kissing Rosie O'Donnel first thing in the morning. So be brave gentlemens when I tell you this with sadness and a heavy hernia.

Greg Ellis, 31, is on the downside of his career if not already coasting downward. Yes, all you Ellis fans get on your swooning couches.

The once-vaunted DE and now linebacker is also coming off an injury And he makes a chunk. $2.5 million in 2007 and is signed through 2009.

There appears to be enough talent left in him, assuming he fully recovers, to make him expendable as trade chumm. To get the most trade value while he's still not a fossil, that is.

And there's a logjam of LB talent. Ayodele, Burnett, Carp, Junior Glymph, Bradie james and Hoyte and Ware. And that is not counting the rookies.

His sack totals led the team for six seasons, but his sack totals have stagnated and he hasn't had a great year like a Top 10 draft pick might.

SACKS
1998 3
1999 7.5
2000 3
2001 6
2002 7.5
2003 8 (team leader)
2004 9
2005 8 (tied with rookie Ware as team leaders)
2006 4.5 (Injured, played half a season)

He had peak solo tackles (50) in 2002, then a dwindling 35, 44, 26 solo tackles.

OK, men. if Ellis does not show enough, sooner than later, I think the Boys will give him the Jesus talk. If the cap kin take it, the Ellis experience might be over soon.

With the new regime of Wade in town, Ellis the eldster, Ellis the average producer, Ellis the expensive, Ellis the disgruntled will be old news, old cargo. O, satan get behind, vanish from our midst and let lhe Cowboys cast him to another place where he will blossom and thrive. But not here.

Cowboys are on the verge of having a defensive breakout year, full of sound and fury and not with aged personnel from the past. I say verily unto thee, let the future arrive sooner than later, O NFL gods.
Thank you, brave men of the Zone.

We need leadership on defense, for that reason alone we should keep Ellis.

when has Ellis ever been a leader? Having the most experience does not make one the leader. It's time for one of the young guys to step up.

it's time for ANYONE to step up...

as far as I'm concerned, leadership on this team left with Darren Woodson and hasn't shown up since.

Ellis is no Ray Lewis, but he's a veteran who doesn't take plays off, and doesn't let off field issues affect his on the field play. While I do agree that it's time for younger players too step up, none of them have.

$2.5 mil is absolutely rock bottom cheap for a DE/LB in the NFL today.

This is Ellis' problem: With the new guys coming in, he's not going to get a shot to have a great few years at the end of his contract that will get him one last, big payday ala Marco Rivera.

He's not going anywhere for the time being, not at that price...

There are plenty of guys who should step up as leaders beside Ellis. Roy Williams, Terrence Newman, Ferguson, hell Demarcus Ware.

Ellis whining is getting annoying for a guy who at one point seemed like such a great professional. He whined and got his deal. Then he wined about his role and did just fine. Now he's wining because my gosh, we drafted his future replacement as he has hit the wrong side of 30.

Absolutely, let's pay an aging paranoid whinebag with a devastating injury a ton of money and give him the contract extension at the expense of holding back other up and coming talented defenders on the roster.

Ellis has made a great living in the NFL. If he were smart he would take on a situational pass rushing role for the money he is making. But no, he believes he is entitled to feed on the afterglow of his accomplishments.

I think Ellis squawked long and loud in the media about his situation last year, then went out and played very good football... I say let him squawk, and let him go out and help the team (provided he hasn't lost something after his serious injury)...

Really, who cares WHAT he says to the press, if he continues to perform well??

If healthy and recovered fully, then I could not agree more.

This is a very entertaining post but it reads much more like a daily dose of Dilbert than a football opine. Much more PFT than serious football study.

Fallacies with Greg Ellis:

He didn't live up to top 10 draft status. This has been proven time and again. Ellis was the 3rd DE taken in his own draft and is the only one still playing in the NFL. He owes no apologies for his production.

He makes a chunk?: Ellis makes a pittance by NFL standards much less veteran NFL starter standards. If he broke both legs and some team signed him out of pure compassion they'd pay his almost half his salary on a minimum deal.

Ellis' injury is sooooo serious: Greg Ellis is already running. His injury is serious but it has little chance of ending his career. Greg Ellis is not Kevin Smith. This isn't 1993.

Ellis' production: Greg Ellis can go out and get 5 sacks in 10 games and that is a pretty poor year for him. For the Cowboys that would finish 2nd in sacks almost any previous season.

Wade vs. Parcells/Zimmer: Its funny that all these guys who had less than 3 sacks are going to see marked improvement while the guys who actually get sacks will not. That makes zero sense. If the non-pass rushers are going to get better rushing the passer you better believe the pass rushers are as well.

,

yep you got that right...havent seen Ellis have to buy his way out of murder

I'd disagree with that...they did what they were coached to do...it was a sorry scheme and the results reflected it...

ware is too inexperienced to be a leader, roy williams has shown he cant be (enter the qb of the secondary hamlin) , maybe ferguson can...but ellis was team captain a long time, wasnt he?...you may not like his media whining but on the field he has been a leader for a while

Sorry- he has never lived up to being the #8 pick. A top 10 Pick should have at least a few pro bowls on his resume. ellis has never been close. A top 10 pick should be one of the league leaders- Ellis has never been close. A top 10 pick should be a real game changer- Ellis has never been close. He has been good and solid and no more. Longevity is not everything- Vinny anyone?

Sorry Captain Midnight, we couldn't get more than a PF Flyer decoder ring for Ellis right now.

The ring is cool, but Ellis worth more to the Cowboys that what they could get for him.

1) Did you know that Ellis's teamates voted him captain last year ? As being a "leader" I guess the voice and votes of his teamates speak louder than your post.

2) People have been complaining for years about our read and re-act and 2 gap 3-4 defense that does not allow players to attack. This is the type of D that Greg has had to play almost all of his career. He led the Cowboys for years in sack totals, when, as a team we sucked in rushing the QB. He tied Ware 2 years ago and beat Glover (known as a sack artist) for years here. We as a team were not an attacking sacking D.

3) This will be Greg's 1st year were he will be put in good situations vs creating his own in the pass rush. I'm very excited to see what all of our players do, but if Greg is healthy (big if) he is the 2nd best pass rusher we have. I would not be surprised to see him with double digit sacks...(again, if healthy).
