No excuse for this other than incompetence by the FO. I understand he likely would be inactive in game days THIS year. Look ahead a year. Armstrong a free agent, Fowler a free agent, hopefully Sam isn’t suspended or something and who knows how much longer Lawrence is going to play. Such a bad decision.
Everyone can thank Jerry for forcing Trey Lance to occupy a roster spot.

I hope Land suceeds

but really? are we complaining that we released an undrafted DE?

5th-undrafted players have a high chance of being cut

Ok? And?

Of course they are going to gobble up a young, talented pasher rusher.

Tactical error. I said the same about Ridgeway last year.

Both were egregious errors.
But players with cheap contracts like that, that are cut, ......those are coaches decisions, not the front office's

The Commanders will make sure Cox is game day 47 when they play Dallas . He might work out for them .

They are going to gobble up a player who will, based on historical probability, be nothing. They are basically taking a flier that maybe as a young player he can beat the odds, and when your roster is terrible you can do that, but when your roster is not terrible you cannot be wasting roster spots on players that very likely to never be anything more than a low end backup.
Well...historically, you don't release a player with this kids talent and upside.

I can tell you he will be at least a rotational rusher in the next 2 years based on actual football analysis.

Don't worry, AC. Lance isn't taking Dak's job. It's okay to welcome him to the team, and hope he becomes a very good backup.
I hope Lance does. Truly do, Runny. I simply don't like how Jerry went about it. Same ol' Jerry who Jimmy got tired of. Plus, I'm not excited at all with the lack of performance Lance has displayed this preseason. Would have preferred someone with better execution and understanding of an offense who could truly push Dak in practice.

(In bold ^^^) Sounds like you're describing Trey Lance.

According to Jerry, SF called and he made the deal on the spot. I don't think he even hung up the phone. There was no disrespect of his underlings intended. It was a bang bang play, and I'm guessing he felt like he'd lose the opportunity of he took time to discuss it.

Lemme guess... You had Bradlee Anae becoming something, too. Right? I mean, based on actual football analysis, of course.

They do find consistent gems....they also make blunders like this finessing the roster.

They thought they were smart and lost Ridgeway last year.

Ridgeway had a nice role in a stacked Washington dt room.
Dallas finds a gem, they need to be developed. Land has a chance to be good down the road.
Jordan Lewis could have stayed on PUP for four weeks and Land could have been on the 53.
Even if he was demoted the chance of a team picking him up during the season is diminished.
Dallas gets cute and it comes back to bite them. Oh well, maybe Land will get taken off of 53 and
Dallas will get a chance to get him back.

I get why Jerry did it that way, but I still feel he should have consulted with his head coach first and seen how Mike McCarthy felt about that particular player first.

McCarthy said that he took part in the evaluation process of Lance during his draft, so they were aware of what Mike thought about Lance. They also knew how the scouts and McClay had evaluated him. They had all of that information, which was positive enough for the front office to not want to hang up the phone without closing that deal.

They didn’t want another team to get Lance so they made the deal without going through the normal, time consuming channels. They knew how the personnel dept and the coach felt about the guy and wanted to get him. They were going to be replacing the 3rd QB with Lance, so it wasn’t some huge decision to replace a starter… or even a contributor. Lance is going to be a guy who works in the background and they hope will eventually fulfill the promise of his traits.

Personally, I completely understand why they just went ahead and made the deal while on the initial phone call… and frankly, I don’t see it as any kind of big deal.

So who should they have cut to keep Land?
All sorts of guys I might want to have kept, but tell us the price you would have paid to keep him.

Cutting Land was incompetent, compared to cutting who?

You're talking about 2 years ago during the draft when McCarthy did an evaluation of Trey Lance. He's not the same player. He's degraded so badly, as a top 3 overall draft pick, he was recently demoted down to 3rd string behind 1 year rookie Brock Purdy and 3rd overall overdrafted and overrated 3rd team journeyman Sam Darnold. Mike McCarthy should have been given the courtesy to analyze who the player is now and whether McCarthy wants to deal with him or not. Terrible GM"ship.

On one hand, we don't see these guys at practice every day. And maybe Land is just the type of player who decides to show up in games and looks only so so or maybe they saw soft spots. Or maybe they just didn't have the roster spot.

Then, there's size and where you want to go with that. I liked the idea of him as more of a linebacker type player. There's only so much room for your defense.
Plus, there's so much competition here. Maybe at some point you just do the right thing for the player. I can see Quinn running a no-BS operation like that, say, in case someone got hurt in camp. Then, that moves him up a spot or two.

I personally don't think Land matches up well against team like San Fran, and the Eagles. And I think you just don't want to put a rookie out there in those situations, and if he takes up a roster spot, you have to rely on and UDFA from Florida A&M. Generally, the scouts are right. But a lot of times, the UDFA turns out to be a better player. Again, these aren't easy, cut and dry decisions. They are opinion and hunch based even though you try to be calculated.

The good news is, I think this will make Jerry want to make himself feel better by trying to upgrade them. The good news is, I don't think it's over yet, boys and girls!

Let's continue to upgrade the roster.
