Sturm - Marinelli Report - GB Playoff

Thanks Bob for putting this together with the GIFs. I was waiting until Sturm posted this because I just read it. I'm actually way less mad at the defense after reading it and seeing some of these plays again.

A lot of the big throws Rodgers made which changed the game (particularly the 3rd and long after our Brice Butler gaffe punt, and the final throw) were just out of this world. No other QB makes those throws out of the pocket, period. Certainly not Dak, not 2014 Romo, and even Sturm intimates Rodgers himself couldn't make them most of the time. There were some bad plays/preparation by our defense for sure, but on the margin we were just beat by an insane performance by the best QB in the league. The last Heath sack also ends the game 90% of the time with a fumble.

Defense was simply out of position on this play. This image still stings the most.

Another gem Bob!
You cannot allow a team to score seven every time it gets down in the red zone, and you cannot let them beat you for 20-yard plays seven different times.
Amen!
I think the Cowboys made a calculated gamble on draft day to not really do too much to address the defense in 2016 and load up on an already loaded offense. They still feel happy about it and we will really change the mood the moment Jaylon Smith takes the field. But, on this day, they certainly looked outclassed when the Packers had the ball. And that will no doubt be the focus in the offseason. If they meet again, you need a few more difference makers who can win and sack that QB before he can make those throws.
Defense all day every day this off season. Completely agree.

On that last point. Agreed if Jeff swipes with his right hand it's a certain fumble. But he doesn't blitz much so I understand his lack of instincts there to some degree.

It looks like the Cowboys expected a Hail-Mary on that play and when the Packers WR / TEs made no attempt to get to the end-zone they weren't prepared for it.

What the heck are you supposed to do vs this?

There is a pump fake, a rollout, a throw with a guy barreling down on Rodgers and in his face, a laser shot throw with one leg in the air (terrible mechanics), and a ball that can only because by a WR because it is thrown slightly out of bounds.

Where Tom Brady said earlier this week that he stays up late past his bedtime to watch Rodger's night games, I suspect it's to see plays like that one.

Crazy.

Yeah he doesn't practice it that much, but I disagree that Heath didn't try. Google "Heath Rodgers sacked" and watch the video on Youtube of the replays (not sure I can post the link). Heath gets his right arm around and starts pulling down but Rodgers actually moves the ball away from his body and turns/spins away from the strip. Again, just crazy.

What if we could trade our defense for the NY Giants defense, a great defense with maybe the best secondary in the NFC and a deep and well-paid DL? Does that give us the win? Rodgers ripped them a new one.

The old adage is that defense wins championships....that is now BS with the new NFL rules and offenses. A great offense will beat a great defense more often than not. You'd better be able to score with the best.

It really bugs me that DLaw uses an inside pass rush here. It is just plain stupid, the one thing you don't want is Rodgers to get outside the pocket.

That throws isnt there if they contain him and the clock runs out as Cook caught that ball with 2 seconds left.

That's a very valid point.

I didn't put it in the piece, but I think Durant is about the 3rd fastest option as the "Spy LB" as well. Wilson and Hitchens are both faster and I would assume fresher at that point. Maybe doesn't make any difference, but I am curious why Durant was their preference so often when the others are clearly superior athletes for that duty.

Rodgers wasn't in the pocket on the final throw to Cook by the way. Continue with building his legend though

Irving had great penetration and they tackled him ... from behind. Such BS

Which is why I said he made them from out of the pocket, not from in the pocket.

If you don't want to admit those are amazing throws that no other QB can make then I don't know what to tell you man.

I was mad at how our defense played on sunday, as well as how the coaches made some decisions.
But after watching some the replays, I am over it. Rodgers was on another planet, and the coverage are defense played would probably win games 7/10 times i would imagine.
It baffles me Greenbay has not won more superbowls with Rodgers at Qb.

Can I super-like this? I thought the exact same thing. That's coaching, right?

Every defensive player should work on that weekly among with other strip drills and scoop and score etc. Not saying they don't but it's something that is taught, not necessarily instinct. I'm sure hes done it since HS, just wasn't in the proper position. Give Rodgers credit, Wentz did the same thing to us. QBs have very strong hands.

I thought Cook catch was better then the throw to be honest

You cannot rush 3 and get virtually no pressure on Rodgers. Then on top of it allow Rodgers outside the pocket for even more time.

Even 8 in the secondary can only cover for so long.

Rodgers is an Elite NFL quarterback and he will simply murder you no matter how many you drop back into coverage if you allow him that kind of time. As we saw.

And what really makes me angry is that everyone already knows this about Aaron Rodgers.

Yet we did it anyway.

If we were going to get beaten by Aaron Rodgers, I would have preferred to go down fighting. Rush 4. And blitz every other down. Let the chips fall where they may.

It would have been far preferable to getting blown out in the 1st half the way it went down.
