Q: Bob who is the best value pick for Dallas in the draft? Prescott has been incredible for a fourth rounder, but Anthony Brown hasn't been too bad for a sixth rounder either...who's more valuable at where they were taken?

Thank you, and let's begin our mailbag gently and with all due respect. I believe, by the tone of your question, that you aren't sure if the better value was a corner who has played well or a starting QB at pick #135 that will then lead you directly to the playoffs (at least) within the same calendar year of the draft pick.

OK, allow me to clear this up. Based on the position of the pick and the team's distance from the playoffs without the pick, the value of Dak Prescott's selection and subsequent success is perhaps the best value for any franchise and any year since the draft started.

In other words, bonita fish are big and Dak Prescott is your answer. What he is doing is upsetting the apple cart for the entire history of football. There are probably no real comparisons. Either rookie QBs have limited success or they were taken at the top of the draft and still had limited success. This is absurdly unprecedented.

Okay, well he does appear to be having the best rookie season yet. It's not your fault that page blocks access without a subscription.

The fact that Dak took Mississippi State (!) to the #1 ranking in the country for the first time in their 118 year history says a lot about his ability to elevate his team.

This guy gets it. For the life of me i couldnt understand all of the negative prognostications in the draft threads. He was at least par with the top guys in most QB categories, and head and shoulders above them with intangibles. People act like Noone couldve seen Dak Prescott's success coming, but i have to wonder, what were they looking at?

I assume it was that even though he has always been great above the shoulders, he is not really all that good at throwing a football.

And a year later, how do you explain his unprecedented success at throwing the football?
The one throw he can make (short throws to wide open players) they emphasize, the ones he can't make (pretty much everything else) they avoid like the plague.

Sturm has been very level headed when it comes to Dak. He initially thought Romo should have gotten his job back. But as weeks have passed he changed his mind.

Dak has to be considered the best pick in NFL history, based on just his rookie season of course. Nobody knows what the future holds.

538 pointed out before the season opener just how rare it is to start a rookie quarterback who was selected so low in the draft like Dak was with the 135th pick.

"You have to go all the way back to 1977 to find a quarterback not selected in the first 130 picks of the NFL draft who then went on start his team’s season opener as a rookie.

That player was Randy Hedberg, who started for the terrible Buccaneers franchise in 1977. Hedberg is one of the worst quarterbacks in NFL history — he finished his career with a 0.0 passer rating. And, to date, he is the only quarterback since the merger in 1970 to be drafted outside of the top 130 picks and then start in his team’s season opener just a few months later."

Kinda Ironic.........Hedberg was C.Wentz QB at NDSU.......

I think Dan Marino had a pretty damn good rookie season.

He was also a first round pick.

Bob's quote:

Big Ben went 13-0 as a starter his rookie season. He won one playoff game and lost one that same year. If Dak happened to make the Super Bowl this year, he most likely would be considered as having the best rookie year ever.

He was also a 1st round pick.

I posted the article. He said value as a rookie, rookie, rookie, rookie. The best ever ROOKIE, not the best ever QB.

I thought it was best value ever, for any pick.

But the best value for a rookie ever? I can't dispute that.
