CFZ Sturm was dead wrong about Dak Prescott

He's had 6 full years, about to 7. How much more time does he need to establish his "legacy"? His legacy is already set, he's a below-average QB that needs elite talent around him to have success.

That's likely based on his recent history through a period of injuries. Let's also recall times when it was far better than it's been lately. It's a good bet that Jerry and Stephen may allow him to return to action whenever his rehab is considered complete. If he's unable to restore himself to better times, it's very possible his time as a starter will end. I realize there are fans who'd like to see him disappear. I think you'll have to wait a while longer to see it occur.

In the aggregate, Dak has been good to very good throughout his career. Recently, this fact is lost on us due to recency bias over Dak being 2-5 in his last seven home games and struggling. It’s a bad stretch. It’ll pass.

No, this has always been the case. That’s why even in his worst years, like 2017, he was still the highest-rated QB against the blitz. I’ve says before this stat is deceptive, because teams blitz for a variety of reasons, including their inability to generate pressure, do they risk exposing their backfield. Against guys like Hurts, Quinn was bringing the pressure, while having his DBs play aggressive man. On the other hand, with Herbert he has his DBs play playing way off and heavy zone. This is why even mediocre QBs low Heineke with the Football Team was one of the best QBs against the blitz last year. Against Romo, teams would just drop back in cover 2 and Jason Garrett couldn’t field a rushing game to save his life, so defenses weren’t worried about the threat of a run game until we lucked into Callahan. So teams didn’t have to bring many rushers and even when they did, Garrett’s passing game, coupled with Houck being past his prime, there would be extra rushers running free path to Garrett. JG showed his “skill” in that department once against in NY with the Giants.

The following article demonstrates how Amari made Dak’s numbers sky-rocket against man, but he still sucked against zone. And the week they played the Colts he went heavy cover 2, the Cowboys got shut out. Amari’s numbers took a nose dive, because Dak couldn’t get him the ball.

Of course this guy tries to make excuses that it was in part the OL, but that’s not the trend with Dak, but we saw how that worked the first game of this season, followed by how Rush looked behind the same OL. Dak in particular looked horrible when defenses started disguising the coverages in the single-high safety looks, showing pressure but backing off.

He’s just horrible at processing the field.

The bottom line with Dak is he struggles with accuracy and he struggles reading disguised zone defense. He's just not that bright.
He's a good dude though, good athlete and a hell of a competitor, I'll give him that.

So it seems like Moore needs to step up and instruct Dak on how to beat these zone defenses. I assume if message board scouts have known for 6+ years that Dak is trash in zone...that Kellen Moore has known for a while. If Kellen is not good enough to fix Dak...and the issue is detrimental to offensive success...Cowboys need to explore trading Dak if possible.

Seems like thats the only winning scenario if all of Daks supposed issues are true.

There are also obvious reasons why we struggled vs the loose coverages and some of it is Dak but MOST of it is other reasons which I will not waste my breath on here but I have gone over ad nauseum.

3 things Dak haters fail to grasp...

1. He is not Patrick Mahomes and that is ok. Few in history come close to his talent. Dak is still a good QB that can win but needs help some times.

2. Kellen Moore sucks. So what he did well last week the majority of games he sucks. Particularly against good defenses. Terrible red zone decisions. Abandons the run constantly. Predictable. He sucks. That hurts Dak.

3. The culture in Dallas sucks and they are hamstrung by terrible FO decisions. You Dak haters might not have been paying attention so let me help out. How does this WR group look to start the season?Lamb a number 1? Noah Brown your best receiver now? Gave Cooper away for nothing. Paid a lazy malcontent the highest contract ever given to a RB. Now he runs like he is in quicksand. Still the contract means he has to play limiting the best back to 10/12 touches a game. How’s that helping the offense. The OL has sucked the last 3 years. Little better to start this season but Dak has been under siege the last couple years. Meanwhile we maintain a bunch of room on the salary cap so no urgency to fix glaring problems.

In the Athletic, Sturm wrote an article entitled, “Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is 29, It is Time to Win.” Since we can’t post from that magazine as per the filter on this forum, I suggest you Google it and read it. The reality is Sturm has been the typical fanboy of Dak and he often took jabs at Romo at Dak’s expense. But even Sturm can’t make excuses anymore for Dak.

Sturm has been holding on for years the notion that Dak has been getting harshly criticized because Romo fans, since their boy Romk got the blame, they would make sure Dak got it worse, which is a crock of garbage, as the excuses for Romo were legitimate, while the excuses for Dak were not. In the August 12th article in the Athletic Sturm basically says Dak is 29 and he no longer has excuses.

The main point I want to emphasize, and it’s clear to anybody reading it, what “the haters” were saying is true and that “teams figured the offense out”, though in reality is was, Dak is quite possibly the most over-rated player in NFL history. Sturm points out in weeks 1 to 8, Dallas was the most blitzed team in the league. After that, teams stopped bringing the pressure and Dak didn’t see the man coverage looks regularly, and the offense took a nosedive. They were the 22nd most blitzed team after week 8 when all was said and done. Dallas offense saw just as much cover 2 and cover 3 defenses as any other team from then on. The 49ers played zone defense as a staple and could get pressure without bringing extra rushers and we all know how bad Dak looked. If it weren’t for JG almost giving them the game with one of his typical awful INTs he is known for that essentially gave Dallas the ball in scoring position the game would have been a complete blowout. Even Sturm admits the wins in the last half of the season were against bums and Eagles junior varsity team and were empty calories, per how on words.

Facts are we’ve been saying Dak sucks against zone coverage, to the point he becomes a mediocrity. What masked his warts against zone is his lack of risk-taking so he resorts to short dump offs and check-downs which use to keep the INTs down. He’s “mentally weak” as a QB. He’s been getting away with it, because teams were forced to bring pressure because of how good the OL and RG were. I was saying I don’t even know why defenses do it do much even during those days, because the data was always there. Dak is horrible at anticipating his WRs getting open and can’t process the whole field. He goes into a shell against and takes the check-down. Teams use to give way too much respect to the OL and RG to the point they made it much easier for Dak to look better than he actually was with all the explosive talent he has around him.

What do people expect Moore to do? Sturm even admitted it’s the same trend with Dak with each year, including blaming the coaches. He said what we said, which is the same red zone issues pop up and his performance of third down is abysmal. He also basically said the “young and developing QB” excuse no longer holds.

I mean yeah, this owner is dysfunctional and nothing signals dysfunction more than making Dak your franchise QB. So we can admit that Jerry Jones is a buffoon, but we can also admit Dak exemplifies the buffoonery of Jerry. We can also admit that Sturm was dead wrong about his boy Dak Prescott.

Let me help you with this.

All of the players you mentioned were overrated before they played a single down in the league. With one small exception, none of them were rated highly once they started playing in the NFL. The one small exception was RG3 who was significantly overrated after his 1st season, but that lasted a very short time.

You could argue that Dak was underrated before he played a single down in the NFL, but much like RG3, the successful first season elevated Dak to a level he really didn't deserve. Unlike RG3, Dak's year one success wasn't built entirely on a new, gimicky offense and he is/was capable enough drive the Maserati to decent results, but not the checker flag. (No, I am not blaming Dak entirely for not winning a SB) Until this year, Dak has been pretty much completely given a pass and it's been 'everyone else's fault'. He received a top end contract with a record setting guaranteed amount. He has been held up by most media and fans as an elite QB, worth every penny. The few media and other "experts" who have dared to criticize him are run out of town.

Dak is certainly in the debate for most overrated in history when looking at his career. I am sure there are other good candidates, though. The only one that comes to mind is Eli Manning, but the SB's that he did have to make a play or two to win, give him the edge in the tie-breaker.

It's going to be fascinating to see how this season plays out with regards to Dak's reputation. He's already getting more flack than he ever has. Time will tell.

Cousins was franchised tagged for 2 years in Washington. He was the first quarterback to have done this. Once he got to the Vikings, he got a three-year, $84 million deal - and the whole package was fully guaranteed. I could be wrong but Cousins wanted out of Washington.
