-Romo cut, we sign back Vinny to start the whole season.
-Flozell cut, we sign back Tucker to protect Vinny's blindside.
-Larry Allen gets released from SF because he breaks both his arms, then we sign LA to replace Kosier and starts all 16 games with both arms broken

Almost every year there is at least one surprise cut made. If you had to take a stab at who it will be this year, who would you say it is going to be?

Since I started this mess I'll go first. Sam Hurd. Not a huge surprise given he's the 4th WR at the most. Between him and Aaron Glenn. My reasoning is that for either one of them there are people behind them with more upside and they might be at the end of theirs.

When I just read the title of the thread the first name that came to mind ws the one you first mentioned...Sam Hurd.

Although I have to say I don't know if it would be a surprise with the WR numbers and us taking I.S.

I would NOT be surprised to see either Gramatica or Brad Johnson cut, in fact I'm hoping for it to happen.

Just wondering, if Brad Johnson got cut who would be our backup? If Romo got hurt we'd be starting either a undrafted rookie (Bartel or Moore) or a practice squad QB (Baker). I don't think we would enter the season with either or those guys as the backup.

woodygirl, i understand what your saying about Petti, but McQuistan and Petti are 2 totally different players. McQuistan is more athletic than Petti, and quicker and faster. Just 2 totally different players. At same time, cant remember which sports writer, but he saw the cowboys offseasoning workouts, and he said one of the cowboys players to keep your eye on was McQuistan. He said he had a real good camp, got alittle stronger, etc.
Petti, if he can survive the league, while learning, he must increase his strength both in his chest and legs. To play at ROT, he isnt nible enough to play LOT, thats where you put your athletic offensive linemen. Which I might add, McQuistan is playing LOT and if he can get reps LOG.
Just 2 totally different players between Petti and McQuistan.

Its really not that hard to see what WG is trying to do.

The thread asks for a surprise cut.

Is anyone here honestly going to be surprised over the cutting of Berger? Or if Proctor gets cut? Probably not.

So she went out and tried to do what the thread asked; pick a SURPRISE cut.

Would McQ, if he got cut, qualify? I would think so. Does that mean she thinks McQ will be cut? Not necessarily.

If I put words in your mouth WG, I apologize. But I think I nailed it correctly.

My surprise cut goes to Aaron Glenn. I think he'll make the roster; hence, it would be a surprise to me if we cut him.

I think the cutting of Keith Davis actually stands a good chance if Elam plays well. Younger and cheaper makes sense. I think Jones/Reeves are on the bubble as it is, so neither would surprise me.

Thompson better hang onto his return job, or he could be facing the axe as well (but I wouldnt be overly surprised by this either).

Uh no.....

Because he fumbled in 3 of his 8 regular season game on kickoffs...

I wouldnt want him toting the rock in crunch time if he cant hold on to the ball. One play doesnt make you a star. Especially in a game you lose. Just like 5 games don't make you the next Troy Aikman.

It's not bloody likely to happen, but it would be a huge surprise if Ellis was cut.

No one knows how he will look after the injury, or how his attitude will be during camp.

You were able to tell all that from preseason reps and a couple plays in a play off game?

And remember when sports writers were oohing and aahing over Petitti last offseason. He was the offseason champion. And he got cut. They cut a former starter and now you're suggesting they won't cut a guy who didn't play one regular season snap? Not saying it will, just saying it could happen.

You nailed it... It's not about who you think will be cut, but who would you consider a surprise cut.

I dont know why Glenn would be getting cut, he just got a nice little extension considering his old age, but I hope he does get outplayed by one or more of the young guys.

But my choices would be; numbered from my top guess thru number 5;

1. Keith Davis
2. Tyson Thompson
3. Sam Hurd
4. Greg Ellis
5. Aaron Glenn

Nah, just wishful thinking.

I'll go along with Keith Davis. With Williams, Hamlin, and Watkins as a solid 3 Safetys, I think we will keep a developmental guy rather than Davis. He's an excellent STs player but not much as a Safety.

Keith Davis was moved behind Roy Williams to back him up so i believe that should not happen if i am not mistaken. Ken hamilin starting at FS and Watkins backing him up.

I like Hurd, but is Miles Austin on the up and up because of his physical abilities more than his on the practice field performances?

Wouldn't the coaches want Glenn as a veteran to back up Henry if he gets injured? BP is gone and I am sure Henry is not going to ( or I hope) play through a terrible injury like he did if he sustains one... In this defense the cornerbacks are going to be on an island and I would think a veteran CB would be better than a young buck who would be put into a precarious situation.

At this point, I think its about time we stop thinking of Reeves and Jones as "young bucks". They're entering their fourth year now...that qualifies as a veteran in my mind. If they don't have the ability at this point, it's probably time to cut our ties with them. However, if they can perform, cutting Glenn could save us some loot.

I think you're right about Glenn. Unless he really has lost it he has a job. But it certainly would be a surprise. Which is the name of the game this thread. He's just too valuable to really go IMO.

I wanted to say Brad Johnson. But I think he has too much of a friend in Garrett to be gone.

Davis is my pick for a surprise cut. I wouldn't keep him if Elam or another steps up.

Abram Elam was used to block, thats the only reason he was back there.... He never sniffed the ball.

Thompson should be solid again. Hopefully the ankle is soild as well.

Tyson Thompson is my pick, but I wouldn't call it a "surprise" per se... someone I think might be more on the bubble than originally thought? Akin Ayodele. He's an excellent football player but we might have all the LB's we need with the addition of Spencer and a healthy Ellis and there is no way Bobby gets cut so soon. Bradie has the contract...

Ayodele has to play lights out.
