Surprise Cut... Who Do You Think Might Be?

Keith Davis would not be cut, he would be traded to NO - we would not get more than a 6th or 7th but they wanted him last year and they would give us something at least.

Sam Hurd - I just can't see the 4th WR who knows all the WR spots getting cut when he has shown so much potential.

Aaron Glenn - that would be the stupidest move of the century unless like some have said he has really lost a step in the last 7 months

Tyson Thompson - not a surprise at all with Austin doing KO duty.

Reeves would be a bit of a surprise and Jones not a surprise at all - I fully expect one of the draft picks to unseat him. Reeves has shown that he could be a decent backup IMO

My vote for surprise would be Ellis - I just don't see him coming back from the Achilles thing with his age and his position and being effective. If Spencer has a very good camp Ellis might just get his wish!

As shaky as our kicking has been Martin Gramatica could very well be a suprise cut. I would doubt Dallas wants to keep 2 kickers and should the rookie come in and impress he could have a chance to take the spot.
Having said this no I'm not hoping Gramatica fails.

I would hope Gramatica is just terrible if he loses his job. I do not trust Folk.

Terrell Owens.

Nah, just wishful thinking.

I'll go along with Keith Davis. With Williams, Hamlin, and Watkins as a solid 3 Safetys, I think we will keep a developmental guy rather than Davis. He's an excellent STs player but not much as a Safety.

why would we keep around a guy who may not do anything for you, over the best special team player on the team?

I think it is an long shot that Gramatica would be cut and I think he would have to perform poorly for him to lose the job. Which is why it would be a suprise cut but still one that could happen given his shaky past

If he has been healthy, Gramatica has been very dependable. I don't see any reason he could just turn into Mike Vanderjagt and miss everything in sight.

I wouldn't be surprised at this at all -- statistically, he wasn't that much better than Vanderjagt -- in fact, if the blocking had been better in Wash, it is very likely that V would have made that end of game kick - had that happened the two players would have nearly identical kicking %s.

I don't care what the percentages showed. Nearly every kick he did late during his stay was shaky. Style does count also.

Yes, Hos, I agree - just one kicker! Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Polite go either.

I'd say Kevin Burnett...I know you do not need size in Wade's 3-4, but outside of the int against Indy I cannot really put a finger on much Burnett has done. Maybe he becomes the next Donnie Edwards under Wade...or maybe he gets cut. ~ cue scary music ~

For those predicting Grammatica as a TC casualty, recall one scouting report on Nick Folk:

Strengths:
Has an extremely strong leg with range well beyond 50 yards...His kickoffs are outstanding and he can be a real weapon in the field position game...Has steady nerves and won't succumb to pressure...Is versatile and can also punt in a pinch.

Weaknesses:
Simply misses too many kicks...Accuracy is shaky, even on the short ones...Has had some kicks blocked...Is not the type that you want as your punter for long stretches...Didn't get many opportunities in college and wasn't overly productive.

Notes:
Kicked a 62-yard field goal in the Wildcats 2006 Spring Game...Participated in the Senior Bowl...Recipient of a number of academic honors...Has potential as a field goal kicker but his real value at the pro level will likely come as a kickoff specialist.

Depending on what you think of this assessment (and nfl.com is not much better), who are you planning on being the money guy? Vanderslice?

Recall that Hoffman did not work any miracles in his last stop, if you're thinking of bringing him back to fix Folk.

Isn't Hoffman an asst with Miami or Atl?

Newman finished 10th in yards per return last year. Its not like he is invincible back there. If Stanback can do it better, why not let him?

Also, there's the injury concern. I'd rather have Stanback back there than Newman if Stanback can do it as well as Newman can.

Obviously, he has to prove that...but that's why we are trying to develop him as a WR.

As for the whole Stanback is a QB crap.....the coaching staff is playing him at WR. They obviously think he has the ability to do so. You disagree.

Convince me why I should believe your opinion over those who do this kind of stuff for a living?

Yup..with a 10.x return avg and a TD.

No Cowboy has had numbers like that since Sanders.

That average is inflated due to the return for a td. If you take out that his numbers are average.

Newman is not a fulltime punt returner. Sanders was not either...he was generally used with a short field, like Newman has been too.

Nice spin on the facts.

No thanks. Newman is an elite PR.

Got stats to prove it, too.

I got stats too...the Cowboys returned 40 punts last year, Newman returned 20. He is a part time return man, so having a guy like Stanback makes alot of sense.

Yeah so do I

Newman's number for 2006

202/20 = 10.1

Remove the 1 PR for 56 yards and you get

146/19 = 7.68

Which is very Patrick Craytonish and middle of the pack aka average.
