Franchise him and draft a WR if a talented one falls to you in the 3rd or 4th round then sit back and enjoy Dez's camp scramble to get more reasonable.

If I'm the Cowboys, I'm not giving him CJ money. I give him an offer with way less and then franchise him if he doesn't accept it. I do the same thing next year as well. It appears that is what we are doing. Gone are the days where we weren't fiscally responsible and over payed for players.

The way I see dallas should offer him what the franchise tag for 2 years guarantees plus 5-10m. If they franchise him for 2 years its going to be 27-28 million guaranteed. He has no real incentive to sign a deal for less guaranteed than that would offer. Up the guarantee to 33-38m and a its like guaranteeing 3 years of what his average annual salary would be on a 6-7 year deal.

I can't see dez taking 18m less in guarntee than cj.

When CJ's rookie contract was ending, it would have cost 26m and 31m to franchise him for 2 years. That is the only reason his contract was so large. DET was over a barrel with CJ, Suh and Stafford all being top picks under the old CBA and rookie pay scale.

Why would they scramble? Dez has as much faith in himself as anyone in the NFL. His agent is smart also. If the cowboys franchise Dez this year its around 13m guaranteed. Next season would be 13m+ a 20% raise, so somewhere around 15.6m. Thats 28m or so guaranteed with him still young enough for any team at that point to offer him another deal for 30m+. If he decides to bet on himself he could get 60m+ guaranteed instead of the 30-40 he would get from signing long term now.

Cowboys don't do business in February.

Now it's time to get it done.

Never been less worried.

I dont think a 3rd or 4th rd draft pick will send shivers up their spine...or even a 1st rounder for that matter.

Yes but in the end none of that matters to dez and his agent. They don't care why it happened only that it did. Agents don't go in and say we understand det gave cj a bad contract because of the situation so we don't want anything near that lol. I'm not saying we should sign him to a huge contract. I'm just saying dez isn't signing for what you and others think it will get done at.

You don't think Dallas wouldn't bring this up during negotiations? CJohnson was due 57m for 2 years of the franchise tag and is considered a better talent than Dez. Dez is due 28m, which is not even half. It's apples and oranges. Larry Fitzgerald was in the same boat as CJ and ARI had to overpay to keep him because he also had a huge cap number.

Dez' cap number of 12.7m is very reasonable and takes away the leverage CJ and Fitzgerald had.

At least, both sides have returned to the bargaining table. Whether it eventually proves to be fruitful or not is yet another question. Considering the Cowboys' rather limited salary structure, they'll probably be hard pressed to accomodate what Dez and Condon have been demanding without some serious compromises being struck. In any case, if a franchise tag is applied, both sides will have until July 15th to arrive at satisfactory contract terms before the franchise tag comes into full effect. There will be plenty of time left to come to terms and settle their differences.
