What is really impressive about these rankings is that this is what people pay for. Imagine if they were free. We'd likely be complaining because Kevin Smith is ranked higher than Newman and that Merton Hanks was beating out Roy.

you need to learn how to read they started the rating in 20004 up until NOW 2007!! Look at Ty Law's name, it states that he play for the Chiefs which was only LAST SEASON. This is updated, please read carefully.

I've never been more ashamed to share the same species with someone...

I like Newman, but I also think Dallas homers overrate him.

He hasn't shown me that he's a shutdown CB...he shadows receivers, but he never knows where the ball is, and in critical situations, he sometimes looks lost.

No way is #21 correct...potentially I'd have him in the top 10, but realistically, probably not.

I know I'll catch grief for this, but offenses score TD's regularly...for a great CB to give up 5-6 TD's during the season isn't that big a deal, because it's very likely that the offense, following the law of averages, would have scored on a few of those possessions anyway.

However, a CB who makes plays and intercepts passes truly helps his team win games by scoring points, setting up the offense, demoralizing the other offense and defense while igniting his own team, etc.

Newman has never provided that aspect, not even when the other team throws near him...what will be interesting under Wade Phillips is whether we see Newman continuing to cover receivers without ever seeing the ball, or whether his game takes off under a new scheme and coaching...I hope it's the latter.

If Newman were to suddenly give up 6 TD's during a 16 game schedule, but also register 6-8 INT's, I'd much prefer that to the career stats he regulary put up under Zimmer.

KC Joyner I think came up with stats through 2005 that showed Newman in the top 5. And #1 as regards giving up catches. Too many STUPID people thing playing CB is about INTS. Its NOT. Its about STOPPING RECEPTIONS. And Newman is as good as anyone in the league at doing that. Why do you think he had not given up a TD from the end of 2004 all the way through 2005 untill like the 6th game of 2006. The GREAT Champ Bailey had given up EIGHT TDs in the same time frame. Yes Champ makes INTS- but he only averages 8 or so a year- and averages only scoring 1.5 TDS. Frankly, I am willing to give up an INT if it means you do not give up a TD. Newman has his priorities right- STOP the reception. Do not worry about making ESPN with a fancy INT - that getting meant you on previous plays allowed several catches BECAUSE you are so eager to get INTS. Deangelo Hall is the classic example- he gives up TDS and catches all the time trying to get INTS.

thats list is not even worth mentioning, the only guy on that list I would consider taking over TNew is Champ, thats it.

You can tell by the high rankings for Hall, Rolle, Law, Woodson, O'Neal, and Springs that this list is either NOT updated, or else updated by a diehard baseball fan.

Where are Pac-Man Jones (yes, he's an idiotic, woman-beating, thug-wannabe, but he's a dam good corner), Asante Samuel, and Nnamdi Asomugha?

EDIT: Sorry, I should have read the ENTIRE thread before posting. I see now that Adam already debunked the rankings.

P.S. Football Outsiders DB stats (Stop Rate and Yards Per Pass) also had Newman ranked as one of the top 5 CBs in 2005. Although his numbers for their metrics will be down in 2006 (unless they can somehow tweak them to account for times NOT targeted, but the data doesn't seem to be there (at least publicly) to be able to do that).

Scouts Inc. = Sports Media. They arn't really scouts. They are just interested in making sports fans think they are so they can charge them for worthless content.

Next.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between.

The list isn't what I would put together, but his placement is probably about right. If you think about it, the 21st best CB in the NFL means that he is argueably either one of the best number 2 CBs in the league or an average #1 CB. I think that isn't that far off. (I will admit last year he impressed me as a CB for the first time since he arrived in Dallas.)

I think we have had such a bad run at CB that we have confused competence with excellence. He is no shut down corner, but he is solid.

I think Dallas would have been greatly served by ponying up the 80M and signing Nate Clements or frankly even acquiring Dre Bly from Detroit.

Newman was flat out the best CB in the NFL in 2005. Champ was having an off year and TNew gave up something like 300 yds or so the whole season, and no TDS. I don't think anyone was even close to those stats. After our game against denver, Bailey told newman"See you in Hawaii". That testimonial goes a lot farther then some stupid fans.

Come on people, I am a homer, but I can admit when our players are not as good as others, or as I would like for them to be.

Newman is not that good, well he is not good enough to be in the top 15, at least his play has not shown that.

He never attacks the ball in the air, he gets beat like every CB in the league.
Newman lets too many passes get caught on him, sure they are not always deep passes or Tds, but he allows too many short and mid range passes to be caught on him.

The most frustrating thing about Newman, is that he always be right there on the WR, but he never goes up and attack the ball, he always let the WR catch the ball, and then he makes the tackle. He turns his back too much and loses sight of the WR.

Newman is not a top 2,5,10 or 15 CB right now. I agree with the rating he got.

Newman has been among the top seven cornerbacks in NOT allowing catches against him in each of the past two years, according to the numbers kept by STATS, Football Outsiders and ESPN.com's KC Joyner. He's the only cornerback in the NFL to do that.

Adam, don't bother. The idiots that think INTS are all that matter will never be convinced. Deangelo Hall is not HALF the CB Newman is, yet he made the probowl and lists for morons like this one.

Looks like a very informed list with a lot of football knowledge behind it .. bbgun probably agrees with a lot of it.

For example, Samari Rolle was ranked #8 and he was almost benched in midseason.
