I question how a really good coach could make that fundamental misjudgment.

Pride.

Tom Herman from back in March:

"There's no edge. If you asked who jogged out for the very first first-team rep, it was Shane Buechele. But Sam got reps with the first team as well. But that's true everywhere. I made a very public statement that I was not going to watch one snap of film from last year's team and I didn't so that every person on this team had a clean slate. Their lot in life is going to be determined by their effort and attitude in our six-week winter conditioning program as well as how they perform in our spring practice. So there is no starter right now. There is no incumbent and there isn't at any position."

At the time I though it was just typical hyperbole from a head football coach. Looking at how perplexed he appeared after the game he may very well have not watched any game film of last year's team.

Yes I would have gone for 2 BUT I can see why he wouldn't want to risk it. At that point, Texas making it a game was already impressive enough so if they ended up losing it on a gutsy call like that, he'd be getting criticized even more than just losing it like this.

I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch the carnage today.

thats the feelin I had to, but boy were we wrong......even though in the end its still an L, and moral victories shouldnt be a thing at Texas......still, bottom line is after the Maryland game I had zero enthusiasm for the rest of the year, but after the last 2 weeks at least some of it is back......no excuse not to beat Baylor, Iowa St, Kansas......and between OU, OK St. WV, K St, Tech, TCU hopefully we can get 3 of those at least, if this D keeps gettin better.....7-5 for Herman's first yr wouldnt be too shabby........of course Id be expecting at least 9-3 in 2018 though......

If we end up 8-4 or 9-3 this year, than Herman IMO is the real deal. He has to overcome Beck though. He is right now insanely horrible. I'd rather have Greg Davis as the OC than have him. The DL owned the LOS tonight as it concerns the run game.

Yup, and this is why coaches don't go for it on 4th down too. They made the losing call and they lost, but they lost conventionally, so nobody complains.

USC really needs to figure out who is going to be the #2 WR, because what they have going on right now isn't working. It was bad in the first game and even worse tonight, and this was against what many people believe to be an inferior team.

But still some good D by the Longhorns, they went out with something to prove.

It was a good game!
Didn't care who won, but was rooting
For Texas.
Turnover lost the game.

They went for a 4th down early in the game deep in USC early in the game and failed to convert. Maybe those 3 points would have helped if they converted a FG attempt at that time. Their offense was not that good for most of the game, so making the conventional decision for the 1 point conversion was a decent choice. They needed their defense who played well most of the night to stop them from a FG with 45 seconds left. Seemed like a good bet, which didn't work out. Trust a defense that played well or trust an offense that could not run the ball and whose QB only converted around 50% of his passes.

Watching Chris Warren trying to block is actually worse than watching Kyle Porter trying to run. On the 4th down run by Ehlinger in the first half Warren flat out chose not to block and the play got blown up.

Well, I think that if Buechele starts that game, Texas probably wins. Lots of mistakes by the coaching staff in that game, IMO.

"Red River Showdown" is a joke. It will always be the "Red River Shootout" to me. Sooners win 29-24.

Where was this defense vs Maryland? I haven't seen a Texas defense like this since the 2000s.
Maryland game should be a pass.....first game under new staff, new system on both sides. They needed that game to evaluate things.....since then, they have made some very good adjustments on both sides of the ball. However, 2 key issues trouble this team, well 3. 1, the OL has no depth, needs to be addressed in recruiting the next few years. 2, their kicker sucks, we need another Justin Tucker in the worst way. 3, the D is prone to 2-3 key lapses in a game that become very costly.

All in all, I can actually enjoy watching this team again. Ehlinger better be the starter from here on out.

Herman pretty much came out and said it on the p.c. yesterday that Ehlinger will probably be the QB from here on out. The last two games has showed him as well as the fanbase a great toughness and leadership. He needs to work on his deep ball but once the game slows down for him, he will be solid.

I agree with you issues. Let me add another. I don't care to see Ehlinger run the ball 23 times. It almost came back to bite them in the butt yesterday. Carter and Warren had 5 carries a piece. That needs to change and it needs to happen now. I know your offensive line is subpar, but you have to find ways to get the ball into your most explosive players hands and IMO, that player is carter as it concerns the RB position. If Texas even had a running game or a running back, they beat OU and USC. Putting to much pressure on Ehlinger right now and he's performing well. He's performed better if they we used the RB better.

I agree with the rbs....why have them if you aren't going to use them.
