Texas strong or weak?

Remember, Norvell was fired as OC at OU last year, due to offensive shortcomings that may have been more attributable to his co-coordinator, Josh Heupel.
He was brought on board at UT earlier this year for his knowledge of Spread offense dynamics.
He had been at OU since 2008, Was OC at UCLA in '07, and OC at Nebraska in 2004-06.
Interesting that he played DB and LB at Iowa, was a LB for Chicago in '87, but he has coached on the offensive side for his entire career.

Another interesting twist -
Norvell was the OC at Nebraska, was fired, and replaced by Watson (who later was fired there too). Now Watson's being replaced by Norvell.

...and Oklahoma State probably has even further justification in their lawsuit against Wickline now, since he's no longer a playcaller at Texas, and simply back in the same position that he left at OSU. I doubt he ever was the playcaller at Texas, despite their claims to the contrary - Strong even said in his deposition about it that he never knew who was calling plays in the Texas games last season, despite him being in charge of both of them and listening in on the headset for all of the calls.

Does not say much for Strong as a HC. Fire the whole bunch of them. Red McCombs was right, it was a mistake hiring Strong.

McCombs, the former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Vikings and co-founder of Clear Channel Communications, said on "The Blitz with Dat Nguyen and Jason Minnix" that he was stunned to learn Strong was the choice to replace Mack Brown.
He publicly lobbied last week for Texas to hire former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.
"I think it is a kick in the face," McCombs said. "Beyond the fact of what actually happened. We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game. When we decided to go get Mack -- from the time we decided to go get Mack to about 30 hours later to have a press conference here and it was done -- we had a lot of input before we went after him.
"So I don't know what the big rush was. I was kind of pleased that [Texas athletic director Steve] Patterson already said that he'd like to get it done in the middle of January. That seemed logical to me. I'm a team player, but I think they went about it wrong and made the selection wrong."

Reports from last night confirm that Strong has essentially demoted watson to QB coach, and elevated Norvell to play calling and WR's.

Strong said what we've been saying -- that the team wasn't ready to play, and that they need to coach better.

Watson was the OC through the Louisville days, since 2011, and has always called plays. His expertise, however, has been with the WCO.
Apparently, Norvell is a better choice for the Spread.

Better late than never, and we'll have to see how this goes, but shouldn't this have gotten sorted out by the end of spring ball?
I'm not optimistic.

Yeah, was reading about that in my morning newspaper. At least it's a step, not sure if it's the right direction. Not sure at this point if it's poor coaching, poor overall talent level or a combination of both. I'm questioning the coaching since as you say, looks like at least some of this would have been fixed after last season. So far it's SSDD.

I think Strong has done lousy job at Texas. Unless things change pretty quick I would fire him. Right now Texas looks like a joke. As a Longhorns fan I hate to say that but this entire team despite top recruits looks bad
the defense had 9 true/redshirt freshman playing at the same time on defense at times during the game. The oline and Swoopes is what that fat lazy Mack Brown left in his wake. It's going to take time to turn things around.

so they didn't ask that old racist ******* McCombs who to hire? good

Well, with Strong's past as a DC, I expected more from the defense, but with a three and out offense I suppose it was luck that kept the score reasonably low.

Swoops is obviously in over his head, the guy isn't even a good runner. If he's the best they have at QB, it's going to be ugly for several years to come, at least. I initially like the Strong hire, but I'm wondering in he's in over his head as well.
there were times Texas had 9 true/redshirt freshman on the field at the same time on defense, what would you expect to see happen?

Heck with race, Strong sucks. he does not know who is calling plays? His team looks like a joke. This is not some Div III A team however they look like it.

Yeah keep up with the excuses all you want Strong is an idiot, Texas could have and should have done better

Charlie Strong's record in his first two seasons at UL: 14-12. In the two seasons after that he went 23-3 with two bowl wins. Clearly the man can coach.

Horns fans need to come to terms with the fact that your program was a freaking mess when Strong arrived. It isn't going to get fixed overnight.

That is up to Strong to get it turned around I highly doubt he can do it. Texas is a hot bed for recruits so getting talent for a program like Texas should not be an issue and frankly other top programs who have made changes have stayed competitive not looked like a joke as Texas has.

Apparently it isn't that easy, UT hasn't recruited a qb who was worth a damn since Colt McCoy.

I thought the defense for Texas looked decent considering that the offense was giving them no help. That's the fastest I've seen a Notre Dame defense. I think it's still a wait-n-see, although I would have a hard time discounting the success that Strong had at Louisville which makes me think he will make Texas into a contender if given some time.

DB play (Safety and CB) for Texas was an issue and they could not hold the line against the ND OL. Now, that's a pretty good OL that ND has there so I don't know what you can take from that. ND was just a better team and it showed on both sides of the Line. As I said earlier, the Offense looked much better, IMO, with Heard in the game. Once the change is made at QB, I believe Texas Offense will be better. There are issues that need to be fixed but one year is not nearly long enough to fix them. We had a pretty bad OL last season as well. Not a lot of talent there. We have three returning OL and two Freshman starting for us now. It's not going to just get magically better in one off season, I agree.

What is needed is a little patients IMO.

Swoops was a blue chip prospect, granted has not lived up to it

Swoops should have never been a blue chip prospect. He wasn't that good in high school.

Some programs get turned around quicker than others because they have talent that was held back by bad coaching. Texas right now does not have that talent. Strong may not be the answer; however, I doubt whomever would have taken over for Brown would not fare any better right now. Brown did not recruit well his last few seasons and did a very poor job of developing the few talented players he did get.

The best players on the field for Texas on Saturday were freshmen. The seniors and juniors on this team are pathetic. Maybe 1 or 2 could start on Strong's Louisville teams. The decision to go with Swoopes over Barrett is still infuriating till this day.

Unless a college coach is a criminal, a cheat or a complete train wreck, he should get at least enough time to have four years of recruiting classes that he selected to get a good gauge of how he will do.

Strong has to clean a lot of trash that was left behind, be it a lack of talent, lack of toughness or a high sense of entitlement.

He can coach. People asking for his head one game into his second season are being a little nuts.

I expect Texas to compete not look like high school kids. Damn take the ball out of Swoops hands and give someone else a chance this guy is poor and when he says he did not know who was calling the plays (his statement) I have a big issue with that as a Longhorns fan. As a big school Texas should be able to put up a fight they looked pathetic and yes it is on him.

He did take it out of Swoopes' hands - and Heard got hurt when he took a hit when scrambling.

Swoopes wasn't great by any means, or even good for that matter, but the team is so weak in the trenches that it wouldn't matter if they had James Street, Donnie Little or Colt McCoy back there.
