https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2023/draft.htm

I posted this in a different thread. There is the full draft. There are a few guys I would have preferred over Dallas' picks. The WR class was good. CJ Stroud is a stud. Outside of that, its a pretty terrible draft class league wide.

This isn't a defense of Dallas. The Schoonmaker draft pick was head scratching at the time and it ended up worse than that. Should have went RB there and there were a LOT of people here calling for it at the time. We would feel much differently about the class with Achane or Spears on the roster instead of Deuce and Schoonmaker.
I really do think they have tried to hit it with the DT picks they just have failed. (Hill,Gallimore) Im not sure they have solved it and his weight loss is a bit concerning

A Bergeron and Charbonnet 1st and 2nd rounder would have made me feel a whole lot better than what we got but hey maybe 2 or 3 years down the road it will be different. I doubt it but we'll see. the success of bass and potential of richards and hoffman does take some of the sting of recent draft off. but i guess we can only hope Mazi and Schoon pan out but Schoon is never going to be anything but Fergys robin
I liked Bergeron but wasn’t a big Charbonnet fan (right or wrong).

Mazi was always going to be in a rotation with Hankins, so what he ends up being still remains to be seen.

I don’t know what Schoonmaker will end up being in the passing game but the guy is already a good, strong blocker in the run game (2 pancake blocks in this weeks game alone) and that is something that I, personally, really want in a TE. McCarthy wanted an in-line blocker and that is what Schoonmaker is. It remains to be seen if he develops in the passing game, but he has plenty of athleticism to do it.

I understand that most fans need to see a TE catching balls to like him, but it is a physical game and bringing physical play to the TE position has good value to the football team. You can see in the “Sounds from the sideline” video from Washington where Schoon just obliterates a guy and puts him on his back. It fired up the guys on the sideline and that sort of play will wear out a defense. It has value.

But the “you could have found that (blocking TE) in rounds later than the 2nd” crowd may be right… we just won’t know. It is a viable point though.

And yes, as it turns out, with Bass, Hoffman and Richards takes away any need for a developing OL.

The bottom line is that year one is just the beginning of the evaluation of this draft class. We don’t know a lot yet, especially with Overshown getting hurt.

As always, time will tell.

you could substitute Achane for Charbonnet but my larger point is they avoided a large need until the 6th round and they got a gimmick guy IMO. Youre right though alot to be decided on this draft.I didnt like it but someone brought to my attention correctly that when considering this past draft one must also take into account gilmore and Cooks and those 2 have been godsends

I trust you over these guys because at least it seems like you know the player. I've heard no one even say why Torrence should've been the pick.

That's what's most annoying around these parts around the draft....guys develop "pet cats" not on film but based on mock drafts.

People trust mock drafts over NFL teams who spent millions on scouting departments. It just doesn't make any sense lol.
I’m just a huge draft fan and I put considerable time into the prospects leading up to the draft. That doesn’t make me right but I do at least know a good bit about the rookies when draft day rolls around.

There are a few guys here that spend a lot of time in the Draft Zone with me, too. Those guys know better.

not sure if anyone remembers him from the old site "the ranch" but silverbear was really good at breaking down draft.I havent seen a peep from him since the 16 draft. I do like listening to draft guys one of my favorite time of the year. Hope were picking 32nd this year

Stephens really has a chance to be something. That guy could end up being a terrific receiving TE.

I was super bummed when he hurt his knee in preseason. He was going to make the team and would have played some as a rookie.
Yeah I remember thinking he's gonna make someone expendable. Wasn't sure if it was Mckeon or Hendershot.....probably McKeon but at the time I think Hendershot had been hurt all camp and just wasn't hearing much about him.

Haha, I do remember silverbear… haven’t even thought about that guy in years. You’re right though, he was someone that knew the prospects pretty well.

IMO, Hendershot can thank Stephens injury for his roster spot. They are similar TE’s and Stephens is just a better receiver, right out of the gate.

That is just speculation on my part though. It could have been McKeon but they are very different players.

With the ACL surgeries being no big deal these days, Dallas can count on Stephens (and Overshown) to come back and really add something to the team next year. Almost like 2 draft picks in next year’s draft (but not really, lol).

I remember having that argument at the time that McKeon was the blocker. Stephens and Hendershot were closer in play but Stephens had the far better camp. But Hendershot had a solid rookie campaign for a limited role. So yeah that was gonna be an interesting battle.

As far as last your sentence goes I mean it is going to be adding 2 new guys to the team next year. Actually this whole draft class is damn near going to be like adding players to the draft class because most of them seem to be next year guys lol. They traded up for Eric Scott....him or Fehoko we haven't seen much of so interested to see where they fit. Gonna be a fun preseason especially with Trey Lance here.

It will be a good battle in next year’s camp, for sure. I hope Stephens comes back mentally good from the injury. Some do and some take time.

Good balance next year assuming everyone healthy.

Fergy - all around
Schoon - blocker
Stephens - receiver
McKeon - (if eligible for PS) extra blocker for goal line, just in case

But if they want to put Luepke in more, which it looks like they do, someone at TE probably loses.
