I actually agree with you. I just think its funny how he has always had a built in excuse. I also think there is something to be said for giving a coach some time to instill his philosophies into the organization. I was pretty sick of him and then we went 12-4 and I became encouraged again. Last year was deflating but you saw the excuses from a mile away and I wasnt upset he kept his job going into this year but it is now way past time to put up or shut up.

Sorry I think I misunderstood you. I was wondering if Payton could actually have his contract expire at an opurtune time for us.
Payton is more secure, but 100% safe. Teams have fired coaches the year after extending before and 3 straight losing seasons would he tough to swallow

Really and who got a big fat contract extension.......Jason Garrett is Jerry's little Pet, remember Jerry hired Garrett before he hired a head coach which is NEVER done by professional run Football franchise........and the front office is and always will be Jerry Jones as long as he's alive, he has the FINAL say on matters as he's stated time and time again.....He isn't going to fire his pet Jason Garrett unless this team quits on him...
Teams dont fire coaches after giving them a extention. Happens all the time

He got an extention after a 12 win season. Another losing season and he is far removed from that

If the Cowboys stay relatively healthy and then finish below .500 I do believe hes gone. However, I think this is a bounce back year, though we may be 2 defensive players away from being elite. Essientially if we had a healthy Jaylon Smith that plays to his potential and a pro bowl de that would put this team over the top. I actually feel good about the secondary with Scandrick back, Carr and Claiborne playing with a chip and another year of development for Byron Jones. Interior of the dline is also much improved

Most "should get fired and never been hired" coach, 5+ years in a row.

Nobody would hire the neutered HC/former OC to even be their QB coach at this point. He's stolen enough money to never test that premise, He knows that he is a fraud and that he is unemployable.

This isn't other TEAMS, this is Jerry Jones personal run circus, and he's not firing his personal pet cat Jason Garrett from his clown car circus.....if Dallas finishes 6-10, Jerry will give the excuse that the defense needs to be rebuilt because we had so many suspensions and injuries, blah blah blah, like he does after every year.....Garrett is a horrible head coach, I would have never hired him...

Again, if he was so ardent about his loyalty to Garrett, he never lets him go intona walk year without an extention. Teams dont do that with coaches. Peoples grossly overestimate Jones loyalty to Garrett

I think that Jason has a Whatever Kind of Guy approach to team chemistry: "As long as Jerry is happy with me." What..Evah.

Jerry will never eat 18 million bucks and even worse for him, admit he made a mistake that required him to. Anyone who thinks he would hasn't been paying attention. Has nothing to do with being able to afford it. It's bad business, and Jerry avoids that.

Also, go back in NFL history and find the number of owners who have ever ate 18 million bucks to fire a coach. Take that number, and that is the % chance that Garrett is not the coach in 2017.

I'm curious on the next hire. Does Jerry kind of sort of but not really get humble, take a step back and pull a Parcells or does he bring in another puppet?

Its all puppets til he's 6 feet under, he's got his new stajum and piles of "**** you money", he'll do whatever he wants regardless of how it effects the product on the field.

The writer is assuming Jerry cares about winning more than being comfortable and selling jerseys. He is mistaken. JG is safe no matter how bad he is.

Garrett will get at least another year because of the young defense,,, it's not his fault if it's not ready yet. Personally I think he's done a good job rebuilding considering the GM's conservative approach to FA. This year or next I expect the Cowboys to be a solid playoff team.

This. Jerry extended him after 12-4 in 2014 because he was ecstatic he had found his new "Sean Peyton" elite coach. Hand picked by him! (see who really gets the credit here?) Last season is a pass because of Romo. Things would have to be beyond catastrophic next year WITH Romo on the field for any chance of Jerry giving up on his home grown genius.

By the way, my prediction is that Garret's career outlasts Romo's by exactly one year.

The 8 NFL Coaches Most Likely To Get Fired This Season
Jimmie Kaylor
August 10, 2016

Being named the head coach for one of the 32 franchises in the National Football League is the absolute peak of the football coaching industry. NFL coaches have one of the most prestigious jobs in all of professional sports. It is the highest level of the most popular sport in the United States, and these jobs usually comes with seven-figure salaries.

Unfortunately, there are also aspects of being a head coach in the NFL that make the position one of the most stressful jobs in the world. It’s not uncommon for NFL coaches to work 80-plus hours per week. They often have to fire members of their coaching staff, and every September they have to end the NFL dreams of dozens of players. While those factors are undoubtedly stress inducing, none of them compare to the extremely fickle job security NFL coaches face on a weekly basis.

There are a handful of coaches around the league who can sleep comfortably at night knowing that their jobs are safe. But for most, the pressure is on to win this year. With that being said, here is a look at eight NFL coaches who are entering the 2016 NFL season firmly entrenched in the hot seat.

1. Rex Ryan, Buffalo Bills

2. Gus Bradley, Jacksonville Jaguars

3. Jeff Fisher, Los Angeles Rams

4. Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

After a disastrous 2015 season, everybody in Dallas is feeling the pressure to win in 2016. With only one winning season in his five years as the team’s full-time head coach, Jason Garrett is likely feeling more heat than anybody.

After losing several key players to injuries in 2015, the Cowboys will be at full-strength this year (assuming they are fortunate enough to have all of their key players stay healthy during training camp). Anything short of a playoff appearance could result in Garrett losing his job next offseason. While we are willing to give Garrett a pass for the 2015 season, this team is simply too talented to not be a serious NFC contender in 2016.

5. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals

6. Mike McCoy, San Diego Chargers

7. Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions

8. Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers

Jason Garrett, upon learning there are 3 coaches in front of him, applauded heartily :clap:and patted Stephen Jones on his rear.

You're definitely right about Jerry not liking to eat dead money on coaching contracts.

Garrett is in year two of a 5 year $30m deal. Maybe Jones throws away $18m for no return but I don't see it.

How is Jeff Fisher not #1 on this list every year? Worst coach by a landslide. In fact, how does this clown still have a job? Must be black mailing someone.

You seem to be hung up on walk year so I'll explain it to you......Where is Garrett going to walk too????? There is no other NFL team clamoring to hire him as a head coach, in fact NO OTHER TEAM in the NFL would hire him as a head coach, he'd be lucky to get a job as a quarterbacks coach somewhere and NO OTHER team in the NFL would hire Jerry as their GM......Jerry wants Garrett to be the current day Tom Landry, he's not but that what Jerry thinks....I like Garrrett when it comes to trying to instill a code of conduct and getting the right kind of player in here but he's undermined time and time again by Jerry....Garrett likes being the head coach of the Cowboys and Jerry like Garrett as his head coach, there's nothing else to it, any other team would have fired both of them a long long time ago!!
