How to seize a playoff advantage. In the 2016, 2014 and 2007 playoffs, we had a distinct advantage, and we blew it. We had home field advantage throughout the playoffs in 2016 and 2007, and we were one and done. In 2014, we played a one-legged Aaron Rodgers, dominated the first half and STILL lost the game.

Great coaches know how to steal a game or two in the playoffs. Jimmy Johnson was a master at this. In our first year in the playoffs under him, we beat the Bears in Soldier Field when many thought we'd lose. In 92-93, we beat the 49ers at their place. Many thought we were too young to win against the veteran 49ers who had the Super Bowl experience.

Great coaches know how to create advantages for their teams. The Cowboys former and current coaches don't know how to do that.

I would at least like to go into the playoffs believing that this team has a coaching advantage, that Garrett and Company have in their coaching arsenal a game plan that will deliver an unexpected win or an expected win.

But I haven't seen it. That's why I say unless Garrett improves, we're going to need blue-chip players at almost every position to get to the Super Bowl and win it because from where I'm sitting, the coaching staff gives us no advantage whatsoever. :(

Well the low hanging fruit here is quarterbacks but something less obvious would be evaluating linebackers. After Sean Lee their picks there have been poor with Jaylon Smith a wait and see.

All they gotta do is sneak a peek at the Steelers Draft board.. Steelers know how to draft Lbs and WRs.

solution: hire up and coming coach from Pats as advisor to front office.

Our LB corps has a chance to be pretty dang good, if Jaylon plays this year. And they're all home-grown picks with Lee, Jaylon, Wilson the likely starters and Hitchens, Wilber and Nzeocha the top backups. Take Shazier and whoever is the second best LB out of consideration for the Steelers corps and they look pretty unexceptional, too.

Risen's just continuing to dig a hole for himself for whiffing so badly on the Hitchens assessment again because, like with Dak, he just can't say 'my bad' for whatever reason.

The Cowboy's don't know anything about what it's like to be the Cleveland Browns. No matter how bad it gets, it doesn't get that bad. The Cowboys are still America's Team with 5 Lombardi's in the trophy case. The future is bright and I can't wait to watch our Cowboys kick butt and take names next season. Meanwhile, in Brownsville... they amaze me on how they always screw up the next batch of drafted talent, I suspect that trend will continue.

I guess I wish the coaching had more creativity in their play calling -- I can usually guess what they are going to do. Also wish they understood how to get the most out of their players, instead of trying to get the players to change to what they are.

I think Billacheat is a master at figuring out what his players do well, and adapting to them instead of the other way around.

Dallas coaching doesn't seem to me like they are really good at adapting and anticipating.

This thread isn't a bash of the Cowboys, out favorite team. This is about your individual perception about chinks in the Cowboys armor.

For instance prior to last year I would have said the Cowboys don't know anything about coaching up defensive backs to get ints or playing the ball. I'm not sure that is fixed but it is better.

I don't think the Cowboys know anything about drafting defensive ends. We seem to have a ton of ends but not very many good ones.

What are yours?

overall I have hard time bashing Dallas drafting ability because I think they are top 5 in league now. They are so confident in their ability to draft with McClay that they let most of their secondary walk. I also think they anticipate better with Switzer likely Beasley replacement and Taco possible replacing David Irving. Years ago they would have waited for Beasley to fall apart before addressing it.

Consistently winning.

We're probably in the top quartile of the league in terms of wins under Jason Garrett. If you're talking about consistently beating playoff teams, I'd agree with you. Mostly because we can't defend the best QBs effectively enough, and haven't been able to for years now.

It's not they they don't know how to coach DBs, it's Marinelli's scheme. The DBs are not in position to make plays on the ball. They are in position to make tackles and not give up big plays. I have said this for years. When you watch other teams play, many have their DBs are hanging all over WRs following them everywhere and breaking on the ball. When you watch Dallas, their DBs are nowhere near the WRs until after the ball is caught.

They don't know anything about the difference between players with mental issues and players who have simply not grown up yet. The latter usually grows out of it at some point (not always of course, but there's a good chance) while the former will likely have ongoing issues throughout their lives, not just careers.

I don't Think M Ever Had DBs that fit his scheme, so he had to plod along with a defensive secondary that was totally non Zone,, which does not fit, never did.
Now he does.

not being able to win consistent from season to season or take advantage of good luck in the playoffs not being prepared to play the better teams in the playoffs just the overall lack of being consistent from year to year

These are all problems with almost every team--except the Patriots, whose main problem is cheating.

I would normally say drafting, I'm sick of Jerry taking risks and even last year was over rated in the sense that a fourth overall pick should be THAT good behind our O line and getting Dak was pure luck. Even Jerry said as much.

After this years draft though, we're Super Bowl bound if not this year than next. Replacing over rated veterans in the secondary is as easy as it they made it look in the draft. We'll control the clock on offense and shut down opposing offenses for once. GB and Rodgers wouldn't have stood a chance against this revamped defense with all the "steals" we got this year.

We had to have been one of the top redzone scoring offenses in the league last year.

Yes we were but, it all came crashing down in that Green Bay playoff game. We got behind, then caught up and then went to a passing game instead of running game in the 4th quarter. Terrible game management and getting away from what made you 13x3.
