I like how the OP starts this thread with "This thread isn't a bash", but it bashing, which is okay. Now, for your criticism of the FO inability to drafting DEs. Its a lot easier to look good evaluating talent when you're picking high in the draft. Imagine how smart the Cowboys would of looked picking Myles Garrett this year with the 1st pick, instead of picking Taco at 28th. Plus I haven't seen enough body of work from this current staff as far as evaluating DEs.

I don't think that this organization knows what to look for when drafting a DE and that issue goes back 20 plus years.

Probably the biggest chink is developing backup QB's. I think you can lay most of that on our QB
coaching staff or lack thereof. Where is David Lee when you need him?
When David Lee was with the Cowboys I never heard of anyone putting time in with him except Romo
Never heard of Hansen, Quincy or Vinny working with him
I think romo was motivated and wanted to learn

I remember a time when it was understood that teams would need a couple of play off experiences to become seasoned enough to make a serious run at the SB.
I guess those times are over it's win now or your not good enough. Patience is no virtue and the past 5 win 8 win seasons are forgotten. OK
We had a couple of seasons, 2014 and 2016.
Second, good coaching can shrink that time frame. See 90s Cowboys. See 2001 Patriots.
Third, it's generally considered an upset to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs and not at the very least make it to the Conference Cahmpionship.

Mo,Carr,Wilcox,Church, rookies Brown, MCollins. Some other D/line jags as this very board refers to them. I'll give a pass on Dak and Zeek they are exceptional.
Expected win loss at 10 wins tops by the pundits and many on this board were predicting 8/8 or worse
what did you predict before the the season began? careful.
I like your example of good coaching to compare against Garrett Johnson and Belichek I agree he'll be in that class.
His not there yet but he has the traits,as they say.

no but I think soon he has to have a deep playoff run or things will change for him there Is only going to be so much patience to go around with the owner and fans

A much more interesting question would have been "Cowboys FANS don't know anything about"

I agree with alot here when they say we suck at in game adjustments. That's not Garrett strength at all and it should be as a head coach. Jason is a very good people person. He has been surrounded by winners his whole pro career. He is very smart. He has many strengths. In my opinion some.of his weakness is his abitly to make in game adjustments and that is crucial to a team's success

They took him from a consensus fourth round pick to the future of the position for the franchise. Just because the timeframe was short, doesn't mean it didn't happen, or you call it something different

It's pretty clear Dak was misevaluated preceding the draft, but whatever, it really doesn't matter.

I thought so too initially. I hope I, like you, can return to that line of thinking. :)

What if Garrett misses the playoffs this year, do you think he gets canned?

Absolutely not.............this his what he does, follows a good season with a bad season............he has never fielded a team with a winning record in back to back seasons in his career.

And lets be real here and all acknowledge that Garrett's job has never really depended on the win-loss record of the team, it has always been more about Jerry being "comfortable" with Garrett. Honestly, If Garrett's job did depended on the win-loss record, he would have been fired years ago. There are very, very few head coaches in the NFL that can win just a single playoff game heading into their 8th season and still be employed by their original team. The only guy I can think of that is similar is Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati. And even comparing Garrett to Lewis is not exactly apples to apples because of the number of times his team has made the playoffs.

Lewis has coached 14 seasons and made the playoffs 7 times (50%) while Garrett has coached 7 seasons and made the playoffs just twice (28%). So while Garrett has won a playoff game and Lewis has not, Garrett misses the playoffs roughly 75% of the time while Lewis misses the playoffs 50% of the time.

Bottom line......outside of these two guys, there are no head coaches in the NFL currently that have had this much lack of playoff success over and extended period of time (7 or more years) and still are employed by their original team.

We follow the Cowboys for decades now through this numbing years and at a point we can only see what continues to be wrong and
not what has changed. It's tough. I know your a more knowledgeable zoner on this board and appreciate your input.

Likewise. It's good to have conversations with knowledge posters who don't wear their feelings on their sleeves.
