The Cowboys retained rights to Ryan Williams?

I just read that after he cleared waivers, the Cowboys placed him on IR, retaining his rights.

Has anyone else heard this?

Injured players that are waived, automatically revert to IR if not claimed. They can still work out an injury settlement later or he can stay on IR. If they really wanted to retain him they would have put him on the PUP.

He cannot return in 2015.

They could have reached an injury settlement with him rather than placing him on IR in the first place...

An injury settlement would involve a certain # of game checks. I doubt you can even do that at this point of the year. If you could, what is the point? The second he can pass a physical, we can waive him. Why commit to game checks with the season so many weeks away? Most guys can come back from arthroscopic surgery in 6-8 weeks.

He's being kept as an insurance policy.

They also probably really like him as a person, and if it doesn't work out, this way he'll get an injury settlement.

Well, I just looked it up and apparently, he's out for the remainder of 2015 -- I had hopes that the rule had changed but no soap. Williams was likely a longshot to do much for us this year anyhow. Seems a shame but oh, well.

When he is ready to play....the Cowboys will cut him from the IR w/ an injury settlement....making him a free agent. He can sign with anyone. I expect Williams to contribute this year...in some form. The Cowboys have invested too much time and effort to just let this slip away.

I believe if you release a player injured he automatically reverts to IR if he is not claimed
The team can reach an injury settlement with him or I guess they could just leave him on IR

Exactly.......

I suspect Williams is gonna get released @ some point this season....and be in our rotation @ RB

Does the injury settlement involve long term medical and rehab expenses?

Cowboys placed RB Ryan Williams (knee) on injured reserve.
It turns out Williams was waived/injured, not released. Unsurprisingly, he went unclaimed on waivers. Recovering from a June "procedure," Williams just can't get his troublesome knee healthy. Williams will likely be released with an injury settlement if/when he gets healthy in 2015.Jul 28 - 5:44 PM

Dallas Cowboys
Williams signed with the Dallas Cowboys on May 19, 2014.[4]

Ryan Williams was cut on August 30th by the Dallas Cowboys. He cleared waivers and was signed to the team's practice squad the following day.

On June 28, 2015, Williams was waived/injured, and reverted to Dallas' injured reserve the next day.
Ahh, cut em while he was hurt, etc. Thanks for clarifying Jobb.

Over the past few years they have tended not to reach an injury settlement immediately. I think they just pay the player each week while on IR and then when they pass a physical they cut them. I'm certain that's what they did with players like Nate Livings. They did it will some others, but that's the name that immediately comes to mind.

That's what I'm wondering about. Maybe it's NOT like the PUP where he can return anytime if it's not the regular season yet but just not 100% sure. Kinda hard to keep up with these rules changes sometimes, although I haven't heard where the IR stipulations have changed . . .

If they wanted to keep him, they would have just put him on the PUP. By cutting him, they were hoping that a team would claim him and they would not owe him an injury settlement.

I find it really odd that they didn't put him on the PUP.

In this case, I expect he's gone before the season starts. 8-10 weeks is a reasonable, if not long, time frame to recover from a minor surgery. No need to pay him for any games.

Insurance policy for what? I think they just like him, as you said, but I don't think they are saving him in case of emergency.

They cut him with the intent of putting him on IR. He wasn't going to play this year.

JJ soft spot? Why not just give him the smaller payout? Would think the team is way past that point by next season. Backups are dime a dozen.

Boy. Folks here really don't understand the procedural stuff.

Next we'll be hearing how we should put someone injured in pre-season on the PUP

But we don't/hope we don't need him next season? Why not give him the injury settlement instead?

Because they still hope the player can make a run at a roster spot next year. He has the game just not the knees right now. And he never may.
