I’m sensing more smoke than fire here

Absolutely. This is Johnny Manziel all over again. There was never serious interest in that guy but Jerry did his salesman job to feed his media buddies to keep a story going and eyes on the team.

That said, his 6’6” frame at 240lbs.. he’s basically a big WR. Which isn’t a bad thing, but some of the amazing catches he had in college will be curved by capable and very elite sized CBs at the NFL level. I’m sure he’ll still have his wow moments.. but I personally don’t believe he’ll be the game changer that most believe he is. There’s a reason why we don’t see ‘Kelce’ like production from TEs every year. 1) They have to play in a scheme that uses the TE as a focal point, or WR1 2) They not only need to be big and run, they have to run intelligent routes.

I disagree with this take for a couple reasons.

1. Pitts routed up basically every top corner in this draft class, including Surtain. So I think Pitts would be able to do the same in the NFL.
2. Pitts is capable enough as a blocker to play inline, so are teams gonna be able to run base dime defense to have a corner on Pitts with the Cowboys running 13 personnel? Most of the time Pitts would be going up against a lb which will be a mismatch or the teams 4th corner. I like Pitts in any of those matchups. And vs a corner the Cowboys still have an advantage running the ball.

Yeah, your prob right. I suppose I’m dreaming to think that the FO can hit on 3-4 defensive starters and/or depth. I personally don’t think we’re as far as some think on defense. Mike Nolan really made a mess of our defense.

We’re returning to a defense this team is familiar with.. minus Marenilli’s stubbornness for jag DL’man. Donovan Wilson emerge as a player at safety and we signed a proven FS in Kazee. Diggs looked good and has another year under his belt, Brown and Lewis are easily good 3rd string CBs, maybe better. Neal is a nice signing, Fingers crossed LVE can return to form, but I’m done with Jaylon.. maybe he’s a Sam LB. Lawrence and Gregory are solid and Basham was a solid sign but we need more Anae. Gallimore is a stud, Trystin was showing potential before getting hurt and we added marginal depth.

I’m not arguing, I just believe this defense could be formidable with 2-3 solid additions. This draft has the players to make it happen, the question is.. can Dallas pull it off? But one things for sure.. if you trade away draft picks to pick Pitts.. there’s no chance.

I don’t know what Pitts will be.. but I do know there’s been a handful of these “generational TEs” over the last ten years.. and none of them have worked out. Just look at the top TEs in the league.. most have been picked beyond the 1st round. That reason alone is enough for me to have doubt.
Nolan leaving should definitely help improve the defense. We just don’t know how much. After doing some reading about Quinn, I don’t think he is going to make a big improvement because of his coaching, but the change in scheme may provide the most improvement of all to the defense for the coming season.

Drafting Pitts in Dallas would be a disservice for him. Pitts needs to be drafted to a team that utilizes the TE as a focal point, much like KC does with Kelce. In Dallas, Pitts would be spectacular, but his involvement would be limited. With the likes of Cooper, Lamb, Zeke, and Gallup.. the opportunities would be limited.

Personally, I believe our TE group is pretty solid.. people seem to forget that Jarwin was on the verge of a breakout season before he was hurt. Schultz proved to be a very complimentary TE last year if you consider the production of our WRs, Zeke’s guaranteed load, and the QBs that were throwing to him. And the new Addition of Sprinkle is underrated. He’s a ‘lunch pail’ type TE that can block and do the dirty work that traditional TEs are asked to do. And his receiving ability will surprise.

I say all this to say this.. Pitts would be a luxury pick that Dallas can’t afford to do. TE is definitely not a need, but I suppose if Dallas did draft him.. that’s become the norm for a team that hasn’t sniffed even a championship game in 25+ years.
At least two of the offensive weapons you named will be gone in the next few years, maybe three of them. This will be Gallup’s last season as a Cowboy, so the team will need another playmaker to pair with Lamb for the long term. Pitts’s production would be limited during his rookie season, but with Gallup’s departure, Pitts would start becoming a larger part of the offense each year he is in Dallas. Drafting Pitts makes more and more sense if you look at the long term impact he would have.

If it's a smoke screen, I guess Dallas is trying to induce a trade up in order to have another player fall.

I feel like most NFL front offices have contingency plans or draft plans that account for this type of stuff. Seems like wasted effort if it's all for show and the team could be costing itself a trade opportunity if the master plan works out and everyone else believes Dallas will take Pitts. Suppose it could create a trade opportunity if there was a team so dead set on having him. Without that piece, everyone else can just sit and wait.

What’s to gain from a smokescreen on a player you have to trade up for?

Id save the smoke screens for players like Collins or Parsons.

All respect my friend, so don’t take my following debate as anything else other than ‘devils advocate’

1) Please don’t misconstrue..No doubt Pitts is a great talent and he’ll show why.. I just don’t think Dallas’s Offense scheme will exploit his talents the way some imagine, exp with the talent already present on offense. That said, as much as I like Surtain.. he might be the best of the CB group, yet still isn’t a generational talent. So I can see your debate for Pitts, but his college competition doesn't exactly strike fear in opponents. Although, Pitts is quoted as saying he hated playing against Jaycee Horn.. if that does something for ya.

2) Almost every draft profile I’ve read says Pitts blocking ability is subpar.. which isn’t surprising for an oversized wide receiver.

3) Bottomline, IMO..the Dallas Cowboys have enough receiving threats on the team. Pitts final stats will only disappoint the masses that envision Kelce-like production.

This team has ignored the Defense entirely to long. After last years worst defense performance.. its past due for Dallas to start investing in the defense. The Offense has plenty of fire power.. it’s time for the defense to atleast be mediocre

It boggles the mind. Sure Pitts is good but you already have the highest paid RB, one of the highest paid WRs and CeeDee. Enough. Fix the damn defense. Jerry is an idiot though. He will grab Pitts.

It’s about creating a team that is matchup proof.

Your only option is to back your defense off and just let Zeke run you over.

Contracts are short enough to make a redshirt year or two pretty detrimental. Unless it's a QB, having your 1st rounder do very little for 1 or 2 years is not ideal.

The long term impact of NOT drafting him makes plenty of sense as well. Getting a stud OL or CB removes that from the list of holes the team has. You can't build a roster by investing solely in a single position or skill player group.

My biggest worry with Pitts is he is great at making catches even when he is covered and Dak sucks at throwing to WRs who make a living on contested catches.

According to multiple reports, the Cowboys have fallen in love with Florida tight end Kyle Pitts. Then again, who hasn't at this point in the draft process.

The former Gator is a unicorn prospect who can do a little bit of everything. A solid in-line blocker with the ability to make stellar catches on the perimeter, line him up anywhere and watch Pitts play.
Some screen.

Except that's not really the case if you can't run block or pass block. If you can't defend at all, the weapons can still produce and yield nothing. There is no such thing as "matchup proof" because matchups are not just dependent on talent. A strong game plan can do a whole hell of a lot to close whatever player matchup gap there might be.

Must want to win 51-48 every week.
And lose. If we picked him do people realize what he would have to do to make the pick worth it. He would need to have a record breaking season for a tight end. Dak would have to be the top passer in the league and Amari/Lamb would have be top rated receivers. What are we going to with Zeke and his 15 million? What about Gallup? He is a luxury we cannot afford.

Forget about the sieve we call a defense for a minute. Let's say somehow they get Pitts. There are a whole of assumptions being made about what a high flying offense this will be. Many of those assumptions are being based on the majority of multiple injured O Linemen coming back from injuries and playing well. I am not as sure we can make that leap.
