When fans come to the realization Tony Romo is the Tony Romo from last year and not years past they'll realize that Dak is now.
While I blame Jerry for not getting Tony the tools to win I also blame Tony for taking years to stop making boneheaded plays either way father time has caught up.

@bkight13 My OP wasn't to defend the jags I listed in the first and second paragraphs (well, I do like Mo and TWill).

After rereading your first paragraph in your reply, criticism is certainly warranted towards the fringe players that simply hold us back, players that should and need to be upgraded, but seemingly never are. I generally agree with you and your takes on free agent acquisitions and how not going out after them, only pads Jerry's wallet (when it's a smart move, not a Maxwell type signing, mind you).

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, it was to defend two clear cut difference makers on our team, in which you also expressed defense of. :)

Don't know how I missed that, but felt I needed to clarify.

Hopefully people aren't attacking but merely engaging you. If you say something patently untrue or conjecture then you're asking for debate. If you're constantly negative you're going to attract attention.

Romo doesn't throw the ball away enough. He takes chances he shouldn't at times and he doesn't have the arm to throw the out against the better CBs of the league. He's not great at throwing the fade. He's slow but makes up for it generally with elusiveness I haven't seen since Fran Tarkenton. He's not perfect.

Witten is Slow Man Walking and rarely breaks a tackle for his size. At times he doesn't watch his down marker and run his route deep enough which is a drive killer at times. He makes too many false starts because he's trying to get the jump on his guy because he's not very strong or a good enough blocker.

Garrett is too married to his training. He needs to get into new play calls as they evolve around the league. He needs to work harder at hybridizing his offense. You can't run a timing offense too much in this league anymore. His clock management needs to grow a bit more. I think we need an infusion of 1-2 coaches outside his comfort zone who can teach new techniques. I do like our DB play better.

This is the same fan base that boo'd Troy at the end of his career. It is a "what have you done for me lately" fan base. Not saying it is right or wrong but it is the way it seems.

It's right. It's football. Leave the feelings at the door.

I got what you were throwing down.......it is easy to be negative when we are losing and every week a new player gets hurt or suspended

I have noticed this year that I am defending Romo, Dez and EE from Cowboys fans 10x more than Philly and Washington fans......I live in Maryland so I am surrounded by Ravens, Eagles and Skins fans and they have nothing on some of the Zoners

In the recent past, certain players/personnel have drawn a predominant amount of disdain from our fanbase -- Jerry Jones, Jason Garrett (especially the last two years), Nick Hayden, JJ Wilcox, Carr (depending on the day), even Greg Hardy.

Then, there were the fringe guys that towed the line of love and hate, depending on the particular fan -- guys like TWill, McFadden, Mo, Doug Free.

Now it's spilled over to fan favorites, guys that have done all they can to help the organization, and were at one point or another almost universally loved, two players specifically -- Tony Romo and Dez Bryant.

While Romo has always had his detractors for various reasons, most fans knew this guy was our backbone and always presented us a chance to win. The sole reason why we were even remotely relevant, and a cover up of a mediocre coaching staff and front office. At the same time, Dez was the guy that was the conduit for Tony and the endzone. Our guy we could count on to grab that ball in traffic and bring it down for 6.

Now, after a series of injuries to both players, the fandom is out and very vocal in their disapproval for our two Big Name, fan favorite players.

It's almost sad to see these two guys go down this path. Is this what happens as players age, as they go through various injuries. Is this a byproduct of a team that has toiled in mediocrity for over two decades, spilling out now into our assessment of our very best.

Perhaps it's because we have two new rooks, with sky-high potential on offense in Zeke and Dak, and they are simply pushing the older stars out the door.

Injuries happen, and, especially in the case of Dez, we should excercise patience, yet we aren't. With Tony, it's a bit more problematic, as his growing amount of injuries make it hard to defend him against his now growing amount of detractors (yet, I still try).

I get it, it's sports -- and perhaps that very simplistic statement answers my own question. Yet, I want to reflect with a post, how sad it is to see things going down the way they are. Especially since I'm new to a large fanbase that can hear my rant.
I understand your post..

but as a fan of the team for 45 years..

you can not get stuck in sentimentality or reminiscent moments in the NFL.

Its called Change or Die.

Or NFL.

Not For Long.

I have watched this team back when Jerry Rhome and Don Meredith alternated at QB.

Same with Meredith and Craig Morton.

Same with Roger Staubach and Morton.

Same with Danny White and Troy Aikman.

Same with Steve Walsh and Aikman.

Same with Bledsoe and Romo.

Now the same with DAK and Romo.

At some point..you have to go with the future and let go of the past.

Its now the future and the past is the passed.

Dez is still young enough to overcome his injuries and play.

Tony?

Not so much.

We must move forward with hope..not look back with regret.

I think football fans in general are somewhat prone to mirroring the aggressive mindset of the sport and tend to say exactly what they feel, however they might feel at the time. It oftentimes makes little difference whether the subject matter is the sport of football itself, the staff, the players or other fans that come up in conversation, what we hear is simply what is being felt at that moment in time.

There's such a noticeable difference in the posts we see here, after a win as opposed to a loss (or vice-versa) that it's totally predictable. Oftentimes, the same players that are great after wins suddenly become bums after a loss. Football fans can be loyal after wins and fickle as all hell after losses.

There's also a predictable ebb and flow to our opinions, depending upon what been done for us lately. Like pro football itself, it's basically pretty much of a rough experience in general. Better get used to it if you're not yet -- it's not likely to change anytime soon.

In Texas, especially, emotions are incredibly amplified in keeping with the state's fans having such an intense passion for football. Emotions are routinely sent rocketing sky high accordingly. In short, it's always a madcap trip.

It would appear that some fans are attempting to justify their faith in Jerry and/or Jason by jumping ship on Tony and blaming him for our shortcomings.

Love what Dak is doing, the development, but In Romo We Trust.

For my own perspective:

I love Romo always will, not only been a great football player but also a leader and a great guy.

I love Dez and root for him, but I don like his behavior when he does things that I believe hurt the team. There is a difference.

My kids do things I don't like and they should not do, it does not mean I do not love them anymore it means I am disappointed in their behavior.

I discipline them for poor behavior, not because I do not like them but because I care about them and want to seem them do better.

This sometimes is a black and white world in a lot of peoples minds, something is either good or it is bad there is no gray.

do you constantly talk bad about your children? Express regret for having them or wonder if you could place them up for adoption?

There's a distinct difference between a reasonable disappointment and outright repeated vocal disdain.

The wildest part is that as most other fan bases have developed respect for our guys, now it's Cowboy fans I have to argue with lol. Smh.

Wonderful take and thanks for your perspective, Bullflop.

I made this thread because now, more than at any other point that I've been a member here (a whopping 3 years), I've never seen this place this divided on their takes.

I think it's a unique time to be a Cowboy fan here at the Zone, with the unexpected emergence of Dak, coupled with the hype associated with the highest draft pick we've had in years, plus Tony plus Dez plus mediocrity, it's led to this perfect storm of sorts where everyone is scrambling, trying to find firm ground and figure out what the hell is going on.

Almost every debate is divided. It's interesting, more than anything really.

Well I dont feel sorry for dez or romo, they both make many millions per year.
Also their injuries are to some degree their fault.
Tony needs to learn to get rid of the ball quicker, and not try and run, and learn how to slide again, and how to go down and not get hurt.
Dez didnt show up for 2015 ready to go, and I think hurt his foot dunking balls over goal post, and then it broke during that 1st game.
But he got paid, and has since done nothing to earn it.

For the 1st time ever tony has competition at QB spot, and that is a good thing, but it is going to cause some division among fans.

Really, it comes down to fans just want to win. What I have seen is that most fans who hate players and attack them constantly will be happy to be proven wrong in the long term, but it will take more than a few games to change their mind.

There were many Romo haters among Cowboys fans early in his career who have since changed their minds completely. On draft day, I remember being one of the few who said drafting Dak Prescott was a smart move and now there is thread after thread of great things being said about him.

It's just the nature of being a fan. We attach ourselves to the successes and failures of the team on various emotional levels and when things go wrong, we all want it fixed RIGHT NOW, not next year.

In the end, we are all here because we are Cowboys fans. We watch Cowboys games even in 4-12 seasons because we are Cowboys fans. We read article after article and tweet after tweet and watch video after video and listen to interview after to interview because we are Cowboys fans. When we debate among ourselves and when everything else goes wrong, we are Cowboys fans.

We just need one thing to be happy .. one simple thing .. we just need the Cowboys to WIN!
