That you don't ABSOLUTELY have to have a starter in the first and second round. You can have a solid draft where you get some developing players who will BECOME starters, not be starters by virtue of their draft position.

I agree. I don't think Dallas really needs a star right away. I want someone that they can bring along and make a big impact down the line.

Don't get me wrong - if there is a player there who is better than what you have and he wins as the starter, that's great. But the draft is to build the team for a long time, not to fill next season's need. It's just so comforting to look at the draft and think 'man - I can draft anything but a TE and feel good about it, as long as they are talented."

In the past, it was so easy to see where we needed help. We had GLARING weaknesses on our team.

Now, it's a little tougher. Maybe we're overrating our talent...I don't know... But I think with even the most hardened critic will have a hard time finding a major weakness.

Safety is a weak area, as is youth at WR, and NT. But those aren't real emergency needs.

I think it's always best to go into a draft being able to take the BPA. I hope that we can honestly take the BPA no matter what the position.

Honestly, we've been incredibly fortunate in our first round picks since 2002. Roy, Newman, Ware & even Carp look to be great players for us. Regardless of the hate the last few days, Jones has at least been solid. When you are drafting for need like we have been, you are pretty darn lucky to get what we have gotten.

Now we don't have to keep testing that luck, which makes me feel pretty good.

This is exactly why I would like to see a WR taken. How much longer do TO and Glenn have left. Will Meachem and/or Ginn be there at 22? There are alot of good recievers this year and it might be prudent to take the best avialable one.

You always want a starter in the first.

You want a guy who can eventually start, not necessarily a guy who comes in and has to start immediately. See Carpenter.

This is B.S. We were in the same position last year and people were pissed when Carpenter couldn't even dress on Sundays. No matter who we pick first, there will be tons of folk on here *****ing because said player is not starting.

That doesn't make them right.

Let the premature poontificators have their say, I'll be happy if we go BPA and don't reach ridiculously on our picks.

Perfect possition to try and hit a homerun by moving up ;)
That's one way to look at it, but I'd go the opposite. You could trade down and get a bunch of young talent that can take over down the line. We're definitely old at some positions. Though we really don't have to move at all. Really, this is a draft I'm looking forward to. It seems like every year theres just this one guy or one position I want filled, and now this year I get to just trust our scouting department to pick the best guy available. I can't think of a pick that would upset me, unless it's an obvious reach or something but I can't see that happening.

I agree with what you said. I can't remember the last time we went into a draft with a pick lower than 15 and really didn't have to have a guy come in and contribute to a weak unit immediately.

Your first round pick doesn't have to be a starter right away, but he should be a contributor, be in the rotation or something....otherwise, you might as well trade out of round 1.

NFL teams, with the salary cap, are ALWAYS a work in process. You can never keep all your good guys. This draft the Cowboys have clear needs, perhaps not starters, but needs nonetheless. We need depth in spots and future starters in others. The philosophy here is that every pick should be able to challenge for a starting role.

Folks were upset about Carpenter because they expected more out of him and he didn't play particularly well (early on) when he had the chance. It was too early to judge him and we'll see how he does this year. But, generally speaking, we are tough on our 1st rounders....remember the quotes about Demarcus "Where." That's not likely to change.

Of course, when you have a team that is almost completely devoid of talent, you're pretty much going BPA anyhow...:(

But we have been fortunate. When you look at other team's success in the draft, we're as good as the best in the league. I hope Ireland was a huge reason for that, and it doesn't stop now that Parcells is gone.

the ONLY place we are really old is WR. No where else. So age outside of there is not a real consideration. But in the first rd you rarely are going to take anyone outside of a QB as a developmental guy anyway. That is why trading down is appealing. I would use the extra picks we have late and combine with our first and try and get another second. OR conversely, use the extra picks and try and move up if someone really appealing dropped close to us. Sadly outside of Calvin Johnson, who will NEVER drop out of the top 7-8 no matter what, there really is no one that is likely to fall far enough -that we would REALLY want-for us to do that. There are only about 4-5 guys that are absolute must gets if they become available. And using our first, the extra late ones, even our second will only get us up to maybe 12-14. I DO NOT want to use next years first.

It was this mind set that led to some horrible, post Jimmy Johnson drafts. I don't want to spend a first day pick on potential......I want a guy that can compete as a starter. We're not locked at CB, FS, or LG.

Everyone is drafted on potential ........
