You don't start a rookie runningback on opening day, you just don't. They have never experienced the speed and intensity of an NFL regular season game and Game #1 typically has an intensity close to a playoff game. Ezekiel Elliot was overwhelmed.
Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett carried the ball 4 times on opening day, 7 times in Game #2, 10 times in game #3.
Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith carried the ball twice on opening day, 6 times in Game #2.
Rookies have to become acclimated to the NFL game, that's basically Coaching 101. Even if you perceive the rookie as being your best talent you have to be aware that it is, in fact, his first NFL game. He is going to be nervous, he is not going to play with any precision. therefore, you start your veterans and ease the rookie in more and more as the season progresses.
That's one issue with the coaching decision making. But it becomes even more clear as the game progresses.
Elliot carried the ball 10 times on 1st and 10, not including the one in which Collins had a penalty nor the 1st and 8 at the goaline. In strictly 1st and ten, Elliot gained 14 yards, 1.4 yards a carry. That can't happen, especially when you have a rookie quarterback that must depend on a consistent running attack and especially from an offensive line that supposedly is elite.
Elite? Ezekiel Elliot was tackled by a defensive lineman in every single one of those ten plays. How does that happen? The defensive line of the New York Giants were so quick to tackle Elliot on 1st and ten that their linebackers couldn't get there quick enough to do it themselves.
Elite offensive lines do not commit atrocious penalties in the last couple minutes of the game as the team is trying to score the winning points. All that talent doesn't cancel out sloppy, undisciplined play.
Meanwhile, Morris carries the ball twice on 1st and ten and gains 15 yards. In f\act, Morris averaged 5 yards a carry in that game but only had 7 total carries.
Having said all that, there has only been 23 times since 1970 that a rookie RB has carried the ball more than 15 times on opening day. Ezekiel Elliot has the 2nd worse average yards per carry. He topped only one player and this should send shivers up your spine, he was Trent Richardson.
People want to point the finger at receiver Terrance Williams but there is absolutely no way this game should have come down to one play. If you must criticize a WR then dez Bryant is your man. In a game with a rookie quarterback, the stars must show up and play up to the value of their contract. Dez did not. instead, we have another important game in which Dez Bryant will be remembered for the catch that wasn't a catch.
Jason Garrett, most senior Head Coach in the NFC East was outcoached by a rookie....from the start. The Cowboy gameplan was suspect, the coaching decisions during the game was suspect.
One more thing. Any team that depends on a rookie quarterback to bring them from behind in the last minute of a Game #1 deserves the #1 overall pick in the next draft. Any fan that tries to blame an opening game loss on a rookie deserves the season that this perception implies.
