The most underrated bands in rock&roll history

ELO isn't under rated, they just didn't provide enough music to leave us with. I can't get it out of my head. I'm not sure if Meatloaf counts, I enjoy his operatic Rock and Roll. Jim Croce didn't live long enough to acquire the credit he deserved. Marc Cohn is more singer/songwriter but it doesn't look like he'll ever get proper recognition. Silver Thunderbird should be a classic along with many others. True Companion kills me. Miles Away is a fun one. Instead he's known as a one hit wonder for Walking In Memphis.

Tough one. Most of the bands you guys are naming I've got everything they've ever done and don't consider underrated. I guess if I was to name a couple that I haven't seen on here yet they'd be Dire Straits and Ten Years After. If we're getting out of the Rock & Roll realm, I'd say Townes Van Zandt is the most underrated artist that ever lived.

Agreed on ELO. It would be like saying the group Boston is underrated.

Not sure Meatloaf counts either.

Good point on Jim Croce. I put Harry Chapin in the same category.

ELO had a lot of music that should have gotten air time, but didn't.
Jim Croce was a brilliant songwriter. I think he died before he even got to see his first hit. Speedball Tucker is my favorite, though I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio.

Dire Straits is a weird one, because they were huge for a Brothers in Arms, but it’s not really representative of why they were cool.

Yeah their 1978 self titled album Dire Straits was the best they made. Six Blade Knife, Sultans Of Swing, Down To The Water Line, etc. Knopfler should have also been mentioned in the "Guitar" thread. He's a finger picker who was deeply influenced by Chet Atkins and plays such a clean blues style. Six Blade Knife is just a straight sexy song.
