Seems outside of GB the formula has either been " run your elite QB into the ground and figure things out from there " or " get lucky and have elite QB get hurt for the year and draft Andrew Luck"

Sadly, this is exactly what teams do. It reminds me of someone freaking out and turning and running face first into a wall, and doing it again, over and over and over.

they picked a truly horrible year to be thinking of Romo's successor,a terrible group of Qbs in this years draft.

I hope Vaughn shows enough during training camp that we can replace Weeden with him, then go from there. I think that would be a nice start and maybe Vaughn could be another Romo, but we'll have to see.
This looks like a pretty awful draft for QB prospects, but I wouldn't mind taking a look at Bryce Petty in later rounds, probably wouldn't go with that idea until the 4th though, we tend to just throw those 4th rounders away anyway, lol, so it wouldn't be a terrible idea I don't think.

Is there anyone on this board that thinks Weeden should continue to be the #2 behind Romo? Not sure if Dallas still does, but he's still on the roster, so it is what it is. Based upon what I saw in Cleveland and last year, he is a liability so we should be looking at any/all opps to improve that position.

I don't have problem bringing him into camp and keeping him around if Vaughn or a rookie can't knock him out of the #2 spot, but in general... I'd prefer a different option, that's for sure.

How many successful QB's are there right now that was drafted in the 4th round or lower.

I count two.

There are two methods to acquiring a QB that will be succesfull....1st round or saturation process that is time consuming until you finally hit on that rare success.

Recall that Romo was part of a string of QB''s that included Hutchinson, Hensen, and a few more non-entities. Romo didn't take a Qb snap his first three years.

Romo and Brady are about it.

That is true and outside of Romo we pretty much threw these guys out there with poor teams and expected they could win. Dallas may not get a high 1st rd QB what they can do is draft a QB whom they feel has good talent and bring him along slowly over the next 2 to 3 years and then put him out there with a talented team to help him succeed.

The first round QBs in the 2010s outside of Luck and Cam Newton have been terrible. And Newton hasn't been all that great.

True bad thing for many of these QB is because they are drafted by the worst teams in the league they struggle and normally get beat to hell in the process because they have no talent around them. Looking at a 3rd rd pick like Wilson I don't think his talent is all that great, not saying he is bad I think he is a good solid young QB but he was put on a field with a strong running game and a defense so that he was not asked to carry the team.

My opinion is this:

Firstly, I think this is an incredibly mediocre year for quarterbacks, therefore I wouldn't be looking for a Romo replacement this year.

Secondly, I think that most of the guys they've looked at - like Petty and Grayson - would be 'bonus babies', not allocated for given their current allotment of picks, but ticketed as options if additional pick are acquired via a trade down.

Essentially, the only way I feel that either of these guys is a Cowboy would be by virtue of trading down in round one and getting another pick to use on a QB.

Thirdly, I think the team is in 'win now' mode and utilizing any premium draft pick for a guy to hold a clipboard flies directly against that.

And fourth, considering the huge contracts quarterbacks now command, teams like to maximize the time they have one 'working on the cheap', and drafting a guy to sit for two to three years effectively uses up their 'inexpensive time' and even if they pan out, you're right back to paying huge money for your quarterback.

So, with all of those factors, I'll be surprised if we see the team drafting one this year before round 7, barring that trade down I mentioned.

I've figured it out. Russell Wilson will be the next Cowboys starting QB and he'll also play baseball for the Rangers in 2019.

They like Vaughn. Weeden is the vet. Unless they want Vaughn to be #2, and another rookie behind him.

I think they really like Vaughn and they are going to give him a shot to unseat Weeden in training camp.
Take a look at the goods on Chris Bonner from CSU-Pueblo. I think the Boys were licking their chops
over him at his pro day. Probably another UDFA pickup to backup Vaughn.

I think it's obvious. In my opinion, they are following a formula for continued success.

1) Have an elite QB.
2) Toward the end of his career, build an elite OL.
3) Establish a legitimate rushing attack
4) Build a defense
5) When said elite QB retires, have a promising prospect ready to play in a safe, nurturing environment where his progress will be ensured due to a real team being around him

The new QB isn't relied upon to be amazing. They simply have to get better each year. Allow the elite OL to give him time in the pocket, the running game to take the load off his shoulders, and the defense to keep the game manageable.

Frankly, it's brilliant and I'm surprised we've not seen this exact formula followed as commonplace in the NFL.

Pretty much what BOTH the steelers and ravens had going when they brought in big ben and flacco

Build your team and if romo leaves start bringing in every joe shmo out there so we can get this think going again

It may or may not happen this year. I believe a plan is starting to show itself. I have a feeling they are going to look to do draft his successor during Day 2( a day you can still find a good starting QB) of one of the next two draft and have them sit behind Romo before taking the reigns.

I think this is a smart plan because it gives you time to evaluate a player before handing reigns over him. Whereas if you wait until Romo retires and draft one high then, your pretty much forcing a pick. And what happens if this falls in a draft like 2013 where the top 2 QB's were EJ Manuel and Geno Smith.

My preference would be for Vaughan to win the #2 job and to just carry 2 QB on the 53.

I think they have to do their pre-draft due diligence in case a QB they really like falls to a value spot; however, I don't think they think they have to draft a QB this year.

It's the million-dollar question. For every team.

When Romo is done, so are the Cowboys. That frustrating and fruitless search begins and continues until they land the next real deal. They are so few and far between. Nobody has a good backup, so it always makes me laugh how fans focus on it so much. Who cares who the backup is? He sucks like the other 31 backups in the league.

At any given moment, there are about 15 legitimate NFL quarterbacks breathing oxygen on the planet. If you're lucky enough to have one, you thank the football gods. They're incredibly rare.

We have been blessed to have Meredith, Staubach, White, Aikman, and Romo here with this franchise. That's absurd good fortune at that position. The Bears haven't had a good QB my entire life.

What does New England do after Brady? Denver after Peyton? New Orleans after Brees? Green Bay after Rodgers? They fall apart, that's what.

teams like NE have a plan that is why they drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2nd rd of the 2014 draft. He may not be the next Tom Brady but he is a young kid that has some good talent who is not being forced into action right now and can learn and when he gets his chance he likely will have a quality team in place.

Looking at next year its even worse, you have Cook and maybe Hogan Depending on who you ask. The rest are 3rd round or lower... i think they have to do it now or wait 2 years and hope someone is amazing.
