It was a fairly even trade. Who really got the better of the trade won't be known for years down the line. If RW doesn't produce and Lions HAPPENS to pick a pro-bowl player with our 1st rounder than retrospectively it may be a bad trade. If RW produces then we got a steal.

Sometimes people value their draft picks too much. For some reason every one feels that they can pick the next hall of fame player with a 1st rounder. Draft is often a crap shoot esp in the bottom of 1st round. When you can get a sure thing....go for it!

ps. reminder...we pick up Bobby Carp with our 18th pick. Would you trade that for RW?

Because football is a young man's game and every pick you give up is a lost chance at adding a young, healthy body to the lineup.

And Roy is only 26 and still has years ahead of him in the meantime he provides a real threat opposite of Owens which will make double teaming TO a bit more risky.

Why is everyone so worried about our 2009 first round pick? It most likely will be a late round pick, same goes for our 3rd and 6th. We still have 9 picks next year as well as one of the premier young receivers in the league. Only we get him this year. Give it a rest already.

Good point.

Bobby Carpenter was a first round draft pick.

Would anyone have blinked if it was Carpenter traded to Detroit rather than a 1st rounder?

We would have been ecstatic!

The team would have likely used the 1st rounder on a receiver anyway and none would be as good as Roy Williams is. And the team got him now.

In addition, the team still has more draft picks than they have holes to fill. They'd probably be better off packaging those 9 picks for 2 or 3 quality players next year anyway.

I'd say at 26 years old, Roy Williams is a young man.

I drove that bus and I am not a Texas homer. In fact, I was pulling for OU last week and Dallas can back me up on that because I PMed him.

Your kidding right? Everyone has their opinion and I respect yours but this was a great trade. I do not think that we gave up too much. Really, only a first becasue we had a extra picks. We are not going to get anyone better in next years draft and we have Wr who has the potential to become a dominate Wr. I would take that risk.

I am not a huge fan of the trade, but I also don't hate it that much.

I guess my big bones of contention are that the offense goes as the offensive line goes so I don't know that adding RW11 adds as much to us offensively as some people think it does.

My second with the trade is that I think he comes here in the offseason for free or for far less than the 1st and 3rd we gave up in this trade.

Thirdly, I don't like how much salary we have invested at WR. Usually you would only pay one WR premium money, not two. Now if the salary cap is defunct for the future, I guess this doesn't matter.

Lastly, I would have rather used the first rounder on NT, LB or OL as I considered these positions to be a bigger need for us.

Anyhow, RW11 is ours now and hopefully his fans are right and his detractors (such as me - too often injured, too inconsistent, not enough production) are wrong.
:hammer:

I actually like Roy. But it looks like we're headed towards stars at the so-called skill positions and scraps up front, especially on D. Maybe we get lucky and hit on some Ratliff types later at DT and ILB (and OL).

Lots of people crucified Jerry for drafting a 24 year old TNew in the first round, for some perspective.

Lots of the top guys coming out are 21-22 years old so there is an age difference.

I'm not necessarily saying that I dislike the trade because RW is old - he isn't. I mildly dislike it for the reasons stated.

I was just saying the importance of draft picks is to bring in young, healthy bodies - fresh blood. Any team that has tried to build much of the core of the team by other methods has failed.

I think we have re-signed too many of our vets too contracts that are too bloated - I think it kills the hunger/fire of the team in the long run. We'll see how this overpaid bunch does this year. I would rather move to a situation where we are passing off our leftovers onto others and reaping high draft picks in the process but that has never been Jerry's mentality.

What the original poster does not understand is the inherent flaw of the Dallas Cowboys when the Owner is the GM! This is a bad trade but not for the cowboys who cannot draft offensive talent. I think Barber, Witten and Gurode r the only starters (I don't think Crayton is a starter for any team in this league) from this decade! Yes I said DECADE! Granted Felix is a player but still that's only 4 guys. So until we get scouts who can say "hey Jerry don't resign a guy when there are about 10 or 15 WRs in the draft who will be better than Crayton, Hurd and Miles" Jerry has to make moves like this one! Why do u think he has all those draft pix in the first place? This is Jerry Ball and it won't be the last time we say this.

On the plus side, the team still has plenty of draft picks for next year to fill its' few remaining holes. My thinking is that this is the most talent-laden roster in the league already and any rookie would be hard-pressed to contribute quickly anyway.

If this roster underachieves, I place the blame squarely on coaching, and a staff I doubt will be here if that happens.

I can see your point, but I think that the team will lose some underachievers this offseason which should bode well for the future both in terms of cap room and motivation.

In contrast, I credit Jerry for retaining the talent this team does have. Teams would be lining up to sign any of them that the Cowboys didn't.

I think this is the worst, and dumbest post ever read on here. You said he is slow? You do realize he ran a 4.36 at the combine right? My advice to you is to lay down the crackpipe.

I thought Jerry had learned his lesson with the Joey Galloway fiasco. I CANNOT BELIEVE he did this. Anyone who likes Roy Williams is a UT homer and that's all there is to it. He has no burst! He has no game!

***? We couldn't have landed Boldin for a friggin' first, third, and sixth rounder?!?!

These are the types of deals that can be a team's undoing. I actually think Jerry may have it in his mind that Roy Williams is going to become our dominant #1 after Owens retires. Ridiculous. He is gangly and slow and cannot get any separation whatsoever. And when he is lucky enough to see some daylight (likely because the corner tripped over his own two feet), he drops balls faster than anyone.

Let me put it this way. Our lame *** safety Roy Williams can cover our new Roy Williams one-on-one any day of the week if that tells you something.

Here's what we really need...

1) A head coach who isn't as soft as Flozell's midsection. The penalties, the ridiculously awful special teams, the total lack of fire. All Wade and his "I want to be everyone's best friend" routine.

2) A ****ing offensive line that actually gives a damn. Thanks for letting us know that you're going to do better, Bigg Davis. But as has been the case with this team all too often over the last couple of years, their talk is worthless, just PLAY SOME ****ING BALL!!!

3) A defense that comes close to playing up to their ability. Again, a lot of this is on Wade. Newsflash: Our defense SUCKS at every level!!

4) And one more newsflash: Last year's team would kick the living bejeezus out of this year's team. Know that.
