The team can not fall apart because of 1 injury

Excuses or explanations ?

If we lose a piece or two on our OL that’s a valid explanation not excuse.

If this season is another disappointment and Frederick misses a healthy chunk or all of the season, expect he'll be the excuse from Jerry. They'll talk about how the team is built around the OL and it was simply bad luck that a key component of that OL was diagnosed with a rare disease and therefore how can we hold Garrett accountable for that.
Plus -- shocking revelation alert -- it's football, and people get hurt and miss time. So by the end of the year he won't be the only one out.

Only in Dallas does this seem to be a startling development and excuse for underachievement.

Frederick is a huge loss. His loss effect's the entire line. That's the reality.

It just can not be an excuse for the coaches though if the wheels fall off.

They will have had a few weeks to prepare for this and 1 hole in the boat that isn't the QB shouldn't sink the boat.

If Dallas fails this year then Jason Garrett just can not escape because of this 1 injury.

We can not have a coach that makes his team so fragile that the whole thing falls apart with an injury.

What is failure to you? And how do you replace a pro bowl center in two weeks?

The adjustments they can make are pretty standard:

-get the ball out quicker in the passing game
-call more plays and run more stuff to the outside instead of up the middle
-Keep the RB in on passing downs to take on blockers coming up the middle
-call more roll out plays and move the pocket
-get other options along the line up to speed at difference positions. Such as Williams at Center, or other guys just in case that is the route we want to go.

Now typically, none of these adjustments get made until we lose a few games and its too late. A REAL coach or the average coach would be working and implementing all these contingencies as we speak and in the next few weeks. If Garrett simply assumes the next man up, Looney is going to play just like Frederick then it will be par for the course.

Making or not making the playoffs could be the difference between a game or two win or lose based on coaching adjustments.

Failure is not winning or getting in the playoffs and being 1 and done.

I need to see plays made by the players this year because of good playcalls. Like the Rod Smith play the other night. I need a handful of those types a play in most of our games.

I need to see coaches factoring into the team positively instead of the hands off approach with basic football and the hope we just out-athlete the other team.

Losing Frederick for any period of time is humongous. The guy is the best center in football, and is not replaceable to the level that he plays at. Looney is a capable fill in, but he's at best an above average player. Frederick is elite. And, other than LT, the C is the most important player on the offensive line. Whether it's coordinating the blocking scheme on the field, identifying blitzers and changing protections dynamically, executing the reach blocks necessary to make the zone running scheme tick or just simply executing the center to QB exchange, the center is absolutely critical to having a functional offense.

That being said, it's the job of the coaching staff to adjust and compensate for any limitations that the personnel presents. Last year, the coaching staff did a horrific job in adjusting on the OL and at LB. Their ability to do so this time should reflect in their job status. Will it? Who knows?

The problem is we've seen it with this coach numerous times.

Sean Lee out.. Can't play defense...

Tyron Smith out.. The DE ties an NFL record for sacks.

I don't disagree at all that we have been too vulnerable to one or two injuries having a major negative impact, but we have also gotten by pretty well in some cases, such as Dak stepping in for Romo and Collins stepping in for Leary, and at the end of the day, why start complaining before we let it play out. There will be plenty of time for that later if it goes that way, so why the rush to get a jump on it now?

I get that but there is nothing wrong with projecting what they could be with the current information available.

It may shock a lot of people if Dallas plays great defense this year but it won't shock me.
I wouldn’t be shocked either way and IMOF I’m cautiously optimistic they will be pretty good but I’m sure as hell not gonna run around claiming almost every player is going to “beast out” until they do it in a real game and do it consistently.

I take more of the wait and see approach before making bold proclamations.

I think playoffs was obtainable of many things went right. I think with Frederick already down its going to be very difficult. Only if the defense is one of the better units do we have a shot to make the playoffs.

I never expect anything out of Garrett. He has done nothing in 12 years. Hes a liability.

Because every team has these issues and our coach has almost had a decade and can't generate any type of playoff success.
I'm not sure that's true. The Eagles had injuries but they had guys who could step in and fill those roles. We don't seem ever be able to do that. Deep down do you think that is because the coaches aren't able to coach 2nd string players or is it because of the quality of those players that Jerry gives them??

I feel like it is the latter.

Regardless I think Jerry likes being the focal point of attention and having coaches that he doesn't have to compete with for that attention. I wouldn't count on that changing until Jerry passes away, or really walks away fully. So from that standpoint who is the coach that is going to be better who isn't going to want/need to be the center of attention?

well if thatwere true thatd be accurate HOWEVER LIKE MANY YOU HAVE SHORT MEMORYS, IT was NOT one injury ..Last year started with two new postion changes Leary LG LC switched to right on the oline, Lee gets hurt, Irving suspended, Baily hurt, lee hurt again, Zekes suspension, Tsmith went out right at the same time then Martin out most of the chargers game , irving gets hurt the last 4, and lets not forget the new DBS wwere all late to the party because of injurys etc..this team faltered last year because of all those injuries and suspensions plus the tough schedule especially given a lot happened dudring the 3 game in 10 day stretch.. lets get real..sure philly overcame theirs but we had twice as many issues still finished 9-7.. put the memory caps back on this didnt happen just because smith went down..

now this preseason its not just Fredrick, Martin having issues, the other Martin is on IR, Witten and Dez are gone, new WR core , woods is down, LVE got dinged, and other factors leading to a lot of doom and gloom already..so remember its not one guy its a culmination at key positions..

I don't know about you people, but I am pleased as can be that Garrett now has a built in excuse for 2018. One more year!

We have many years to grade Jason on.

You say it was an accumulation of injuries but 1 Sean Lee out meant we couldn't defend.

1 Tyron Smith out meant we couldn't protect the passer.

That is ridiculous.

im not defending Garett but your argument is flawed and did you not read Hitchens was out for what 4 games early on as well as Lee plus what was supposed to be the starting DBs were all out and back late one at a time plus very young, also on D we lost price and I cant remember tapper and Collins..it was so bad last year people really forget how many players we lost in and out of the lineup or suspended or both in Irvings situation LOL add in Smith had to start and play way too many snaps at LB due to all this.. it was bad and cant all be put on one coach or player..Im encouraged after all that we still were 9-7 had a small chance late until dez sing handedly blew the Seahawk game UGH

Yeah, considering the line still has Tyron, Martin, La'el, a second round LG, and Looney isn't exactly dog meat, no excuse.

Garrett's excuse came early and if we think this is the last starter to lose playing time, think again. He was not going to be fired so this plays into the scheme quite nicely. Those that thought a losing record would get him canned, haven't been watching Booger with family and that is what Garrett is.

Losing Yosemite hurts because he is a top 3 Center but the development of Williams might be stunted as well. Having a player regarded as one of the smartest in the league next to him was a real bonus. So now we've got a rookie and backup C next to each other and this could precipitate them bringing back Martin before he's completely 100% because the early part of the schedule is the easiest, they cannot go 0-2 to open the season. Think they can afford to have the now starting C at risk for pretend games?

There are 5 players that I view as critical to this offense and any 1 of them missing is a real problem even though there's two weeks left to prepare and part of that is because I've seen how this coaching staff cannot overcome losing starters. We are now down 1 of the 5 with no real known return date, another has a hyperextended knee, another had back issues last season and we do not know if that is not still a problem waiting to surface, we saw the team without the RB1 and that leaves the QB and some don't have confidence in him.

I cannot fault the team for not having a backup for Yosemite, there are not 32 quality starting Center's in the league and the team has a lot invested in the OL and about to jack that up with Collins. It is just what it is, can't have depth everywhere and when you've got a highly paid Center, having a well paid backup makes no sense.

The loss of the Center cannot be overexaggerated as to the effect. Remember losing Stepnowski and that was a far better offense than this one with HOF skill players. I just hope he's going to be OK because I like him and I liked the pick and he is the leader of that OL.

We continually , year after year seem to lack depth. This is more of a GM issue than a coach issue from this standpoint that 1 injury effects us so badly. Every preseason it SEEMS we get beat up by other teams 2nd and 3rd teams.

It can, has, may...
Our coaches have proven over and over they can't handle it.
Just another excuse why JG hasn't won anything for when they talk extension

Lets see, the middle of the DL is a potential problem and now the middle of the OL is a potential problem. The problem of being one deep is you lose. I am still at 6 to 8 wins this year and that should be good enough to find a DL and OL help. Maybe a safety can wait until the following year?
