The Trey Lance Pick Gets Worse

There isn't a question. It is a fact that he will play in the preseason.
Lots of guys that don’t make the team play in preseason games. The same can be said for the opponent. When the regular season starts he’s either QB1, QB2, QB3, or no longer with the Cowboys. If it’s QB3 or no longer with the Cowboys it was a waste of a 4th round pick to acquire him. If the Cowboys feel compelled to draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft that will indicate Lance is getting dumped. He’s owed $4,500,000 dollars five days after camp opens in July. That’s a silly expenditure for a guy that’s not making the 48 man game day roster.

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch think Lance won’t cut it in the NFL.

Jerry and Stephen Jones do.

It’s cute to have hope. Lord knows I’m as guilty as anyone…but honestly who is more likely to be right in that equation?

Again, fans think there’s some grand plan here when it was just Jerry wanting to do something like play GM, and my he was awfully proud of himself over it.
More like they chose Purdy and to avoid having a divided locker room they got rid of Trey. You ever hear the saying if you have two starting QBs you have no starting QB. They had to decide who to keep, they chose Purdy.

The reason I still can’t make sense of it is even if he shows any signs at all of being any good, they are going to have to pay him immediately.

Anyone who figures he is the equivalent of this years fourth round pick is missing that part of it. There’s no rookie deal here. That’s over. I mean, unless they are ready to fully roll with him this year. Even then, gotta pay him next year if he is worth keeping at all.

It just doesn’t add up and that’s because there is no actual plan that makes sense. It was simply Jerry playing with his toy and it was worth a fourth rounder to him to boast over how having him in charge is such an advantage and that he did it all by himself.

I mean, let’s be real about it. This was no master plan.
Yet there are CZers that have commented in previous Lance threads that Jones will flip him for a 3rd ounder after he shows during next summer's training camp and preseason.

Will he ever play? If you extend Dak and throw a boatload at Dak, Lance's trade is worthless
Regardless of Prescott's status, the Cowboys declined the 5th-year option on Lance- so he will be a free agent in 2025.
The FO will have to negotiate a new deal if they want to keep him.

The Cowboys basically "drafted a QB" when they used the 2024 4th round pick on Lance.
Can't see them at all using another draft spot for another QB...certainly not picks 1, 2, 3, 5 or 6.

Maybe they take a flyer on one with of the 7th round selections.
Or sign a UDFA to be a camp an an OTA and TC arm.

Jerry possibly overpaid for Lance, but if he beats Rush in TC, he may have earned his keep. :flagwave:
If so, it can't hurt Jerry's reputation much . . . :muttley: nor Lance's, come to think about it . . .

Did you watch Will Greer light it up in training camp last year? What's he doing now?

Seems like we both don't know -- if he was so great, maybe we would've seen by now?!

I suspect he will be qb 2.

Lance broke his throwing hand and then his leg.

That's why SF GM was shopping Lance that Spring.

Jimmy G was gone and they lucked into Purdy. (btw, Purdy was terrible in that SB.)

It's not about Lance's ability to play QB.

Plenty of video on Lance making plays.

Be thankful we have the kid.

He's our ticket out of this mess with Dak and the jacked up salary cap.

Did Purdy get hurt?

So…Zach Wilson has a higher ceiling than Lance. That’s why he chosen over him. What do you think the Jets will get for Wilson? It will be nothing despite, according to your logic, he has a higher ceiling than Lance.
Why do people keep talking about ceilings?

Trance has the lowest floor out of all of them. He has only played QB 1 year in his life.

I assume you know this but for others that don’t Purdy was coming off surgery on his throwing arm (elbow specifically) and somehow they still were happier with the last pick in the draft who couldn’t throw all spring being backed up by a guy who can’t resist making bad throws.

I don't think so. I read several things, and every one of them said 51% of snaps = a 4th. Where'd you get the 5th pick from?

Your last line is simply hilarious. Fields went for a backup price because he is terrible. He has been bad at QB since he entered the league. I have no idea where you got the reasoning in your head that it has something to do w/ demand, but it's a hugely erroneous take. Several teams are still QB needy and would've given up a high draft pick in an instant for a starting QB type.

In all seriousness, exactly what is making people think Fields doesn't suck?
Will Fields be competing for the starting job or the back up role like Trance?

More like they chose Purdy and to avoid having a divided locker room they got rid of Trey. You ever hear the saying if you have two starting QBs you have no starting QB. They had to decide who to keep, they chose Purdy.
There wasn’t going to be a divided locker room with a 3rd year QB who had a 2-2 record and was coming off an injury. Lance was given an opportunity to compete for the starting job and ended up the third QB. He wasn’t happy with the situation and the 49ers realized they gambled and lost with him. The 49ers would have to make a decision on Lance's fifth-year option following the 2023 season, but because he was redshirted his rookie season and injured in year 2, he had very limited tape and SF had little faith in him. The 49ers and Shanahan likely weren't going to waste another window-season trying to figure out what they had or didn't have in him and decided to trade him.

Divided? Who wanted Trance to start in SF?

Do you mean divided for the back up job?
