in all phases of the game, there have been some really positive developments this season, and some really negative ones. off the top of my head:
offense: positives
miles austin, obviously.
romo's maturation process.
owens is gone.
garrett has some really cool plays.
offense: negatives
barber is not an impact player anymore. he's an average back who's taking carries away from felix jones and tashard choice.
martellus bennett has not made an impact -- but then again, he hasn't been targeted very often, either.
roy williams has made about as much of an impact as crayton used to. that's not enough. too many bad routes and dropped passes.
garrett has some really weird play calls.
the offensive line is inconsistent. one play it blows defenders off the line of scrimmage, the next it can't stop anyone. it seems to get weaker near the goal line, and not just today.
defense: positives
spencer hasn't gotten sacks, but he has been productive and disruptive.
brooking. enough said.
sensabaugh has been a big improvement over you-know-who.
mike jenkins has played pretty darn well, overall.
generally, the defense is tough and keeps the team in the game.
defense: negatives
can't seem to rush the passer anymore. always a step late.
can't make a big stop when the game is on the line.
special teams: positives
coverage is much improved.
beuhler is a stud.
special teams: negatives
nick folk has turned into mike vanderjagt.
...so, what an up-and-down year. i think the team is DECENT, it's just still not yet a playoff-winning team. i DON'T think it's about talent, really, but about focus and fire. way too many times, this season and over the past few seasons, the team has just come out flat or come up short. that's an underachieving team. that's not about scheme or talent, it's about heart and the preparation you get from your coaches.
so, yes, i think wade's option will not be picked up. i don't assume that garrett will take over, though, as his performance has also been shaky. i mean, his offense is racking up YARDS but they are not translating into POINTS like they should. so if a new coach is brought in, he may bring in a bunch of coordinators, too.
i think carpenter will finally be gone, as long as the linebackers drafted this past april are healthy and show at least a little something. i'm not sure about guys like spears and hatcher, though. yeah, i know they do the "dirty work," but they just seem so... AVERAGE.
i hope that jones and choice get more touches, along with bennett and maybe even ogletree. roy williams seems to be doing enough to stay, but who knows if he'll ever be a bigger playmaker?
and i hope that some help is brought in for the offensive line. we need some more hope for the future there.
but MOST OF ALL, the team really, really needs more guys who will get in someone's face and DEMAND more results.
