He's my nephew but love the kid like a son definitely I hear you on that element of getting to share activities esp video games with the kids, you get some of the childhood vibes coming back and the nostalgia is great tbh. Letting them score in madden to gain confidence initially, two weeks later they are actually beating you (I was the same way as a kid, leave me that game for a week and I will learn it in and out)

The world could be burning down around you and you wouldn't flinch...meh, well this is now our new world! lol

That is so cool. I have two nephews that I don't get to see very often. Whey they visit, they bring their Xbox with them and demand I play with them. Their parents have no interest in video games and the kids are just in awe of me making and knowing games. I have to admit that it feels pretty good. I'm definitely the cool uncle.

Much appreciated brother. Here's a funny story I tell people. I was a high school dropout with no real prospects of success. I took a pay cut from stocking groceries to become a game tester at 17. 4.50 an hour. When I was 25, I got a game designer job that paid me a good signing bonus so I bought my first house. It was a pretty nice house near the lake in Lago Vista, TX. I invited the whole family to visit and my Grandmother who always favored my accountant Cousins came. She always thought I was a loser and I'm sure was expecting to come to a shack. She looked around, tapped me on the arm and said, "just keep doing whatever it is you're doing". I always get a good chuckle from that memory.

It was the same for some of my friends playing poker growing up. When you give your mom a 1,000 "just cuz" they seem to come around. Maybe you do know what you're doing. I could also see the gaming industry becoming overflooded as a go to aspiration like DJ'ing seemed to be in the 2000s to this more current gen. Bunch of stoners think they can show up and just make games lol...you ever see the credits after these games, takes a ton of hard work that's not as attractive as the final product.

Going totally off topic here but did your friends have success playing poker in the long run? My mom cleaned houses for a living and one of the rich kids she cleaned for went in to that. He won initially but ultimately Mommy and Daddy bailed him out.

When you start putting in real volume and allow for variance to sort itself, you really have to have a discipline that most players don't have/me included for the most part. I still have a hard time folding pocket Q's pre-flop, but know pros can do that when they smell it. I smell it and still put it in.

I even tried the semi pro route (code word for degenerate who works a job, but spends all their time at the poker table lol). I came out to really more of a break even player when I did my numbers. So a lot better than most, but not good enough to make a living on it (at least on cash games which is what I play/played)

As I got older, I realized just how bad I was tbh and how little I really knew about the game back during the online craze before 2011. I'd rant on for hours on poker, so will end it here, etc. Cyberbob is another poker head on here too.

Nah not at all, didn't take that way. None of us came from any situations where we could get bailed out, etc. You could always crash on your boys couch for a few weeks and vice versa wo passing judgement type thing but only one friend I knew really fell into gambling debt hard. He would drive up to AC by himself in the middle of the night to play 3 card poker table games and evidently was ripping off his sisters credit card along the way.

Probably too stoned face if I had to guess. Nervous from having good cards/or from bluffing...that's where it takes some experience. Even then you guess wrong sometimes.

A little trick I like to do is when sitting down at a fresh game with a new player is to ask him a question that doesn't require any thought or allowance for lying. Did the Skins lose yesterday? You remember by how much? Then later on while in a hand with them I can ask them a q and comp. the tone in his answer.

"can you beat a pair?" trying to induce a laugh "would you show me if I fold?" give my a yes or no to compare! These kind of help me feel them out to help me build a little instinct for that player.
Even better, asking a q like "what was the score?" You can kind of gauge how he answers that q with a later q while in a hand with them to determine if he's nervous/acting differently. "how much was the bet, how many chips you have left?" If they answer (you don't have to, most shouldn't), you can compare how they say that number with the earlier score to gauge if it sounds different or off to you.

General rule: if someone is acting coy, not interested in the hand but when it comes to them they're calling and raising, they're strong. The ones who look away from the flop usually have some goods. When someone is starting hard at the board, they want you to respect their hand as if it hit.

Don't start that rabbit hole, it'll suck you in. Honestly though it's a great game and definitely recommend it to anyone-the "natural" in poker is a unicorn for the most part. There are savants, but most are really just following a similar formula and putting in the numbers. GTO (Game Theory Optimal) which is what the math nerds/internet players mainly use vs the exploitive play used by more old school players (based more on situation and feel) I mainly use GTO until I get a feel for a player.

It's pretty interesting how immersed you can get in a VR. I think it was Skyrim VR, I walked down into this cave and there were big spiders. I HATE Spiders. Naturally I freaked out. Screamed like a little girl and ripped the headset off.
