I didn’t really have a problem with the Wheat call. I was more upset with the 15 yard penalty on Hoffman. Then Jourdan Lewis gets mugged and driven to the ground after the play and the refs swallow their whistles.
Unnecessary roughness penalties are purely emotional. Did the ref think it was mean enough? Flag.

The way you avoid those is by not being a complete idiot like Hoffman shoving people on your first play of the season as a fringe backup offensive lineman.

His helmet hit Fields under the chin. That's a no-no.
but it didn't it clearly only hit the shoulder pads. It doesn't matter now we won the game so all this is like useless fodder..... We got 7 bad non calls in the Saints game we get a lot of these it gets old and yeah I don't like the penalty on TJ bass the man was being assaulted on the ground wouldn't be let up and he steps up and it looks like he did something for no reason and he gets a penalty that should have been offsetting penalties... Literally they call what they want they see what they want we already learned there's no way to complain about the refs they screw people in every game on every team so yeah another one that in real time look bad but they had an opportunity to review it and it should've been overturned.... You know the refs are bad when you can watch it in super slow motion frame by frame three times and still get it wrong because you're afraid to admit you're wrong yeah that's an egomaniacal view on things hey I know it was wrong but I don't wanna make myself look bad and my people look bad so I'm just gonna say it yeah it's a penalty and it'll stand

Exactly I posted that myself he was being salted on the ground and he couldn't get up so he got mad and got up strong he didn't do anything wrong in this situation if anything it should have been offsetting penalties both should have got a warning but of course they screw us and at the end of the game yes they missed the helmet thing on Jordan Lewis if you wanna talk talk when you start shoving guys and keep him on the ground yeah this is NFL football you just mess with the bull you're gonna get the horns they allow the taunting I mean they find CD lamb for nonsense but TJ bass is being assaulted on the ground basically they wouldn't let him up to get back in the huddle and they call him for the way he got up in posturing he didn't even do anything

Its clear enough that at this point you either can't comprehend my point or are willfully ignorant. Either way I don't care enough about stranger on the internet to post again. Life is too short.
We're in a thread talking about the validity of a single call and you come in with no clearly defined opinion on the subject of the thread but throw in a "well the rulebook is written to induce judgement on purpose." Willfully ignorant you say? This ain't my first rodeo, partner. I've seen all the change-the-subject tactics there are when people want to dance around the refs actually being correct on a call against us. The 'spiracy bunch are having a tough time after the refs called a penalty on the Giants that should have been on us. Are they in a dispute with the Mara family and have turned their own weapon against them and now help the Cowboys? Lol.

Also, you engage me first then want to leave in a huff when I don't follow your boondoggle? Okay. Seen it all, I tells ya.

Fields basically ran into him. Definitely wasn't a roughing the passer but in today's game they're calling it. Especially against the Cowboys.

Absolutely a penalty. Gotta play smart. That will get called 99.9% of the time
Absolutely a penalty because the refs are protecting the QBs. But it wasn't a foul. Helmets never touched. Fields head snapped back because of whiplash. That happens when a hard tackle takes place. Maybe the refs would have given Wheat some leeway if he presented Fields with a card and flowers. Pathetic.

You have to play smart. If you know the refs are looking for any reason to enforce a rule— you have to play with discipline.

Wheat went to make the tackle high instead of targeting Fields waist or lower body. IMO— he has no one to blame for himself for that penalty. Talking about whether the refs are over-protecting QBs is a completely different discussion.

Under the current rules and culture of enforcement— Wheat absolutely should have been flagged.

Would he have been flagged 30 years ago? No. Do I prefer that style of football. Yes. None of that changes the reality of the game today.

Adapt or die as they say

I think Hoffman got it because he basically "punched" (more like slapped) the DL who shoved him while he was on the ground. The ref saw the slap and flagged it. If I'm thinking of the right play with Lewis, it was a tussle where the refs could see that both players were engaged, so at worst, it would have been offsetting. Man, there was a lot of testiness in this game.

Marcus Rock posted the rule, so I don't think there's any ambiguity with this one. There have been plenty of penalties that I felt were bad calls, but this was not one of them. The refs applied the rule as written.

Completely legal even by the defenseless posture rules I posted above?
I disagree with the application of the rule here. You've got a QB running all over the place behind the line of scrimmage. He becomes defenseless only once he releases the ball which is simultaneous to when Wheat launches himself for the hit. I'd accept the penalty if this were a QB navigating within the pocket as a more stationary target.

Good hit. Do it every week. Never want a player to get injured but always want to hit in Football and make players look around and be aware of you on the next play

That's not defenseless posture ...if it's within two steps of the pass being made. In other words, the rules DOES NOT REQUIRE perfection of the defensive player as regards the "defenseless posture"...it does require perfection when it comes to the location of the hit. I think the refs erred on the side of caution but I doubt the league will fine him because he will have lawyers (players union) who can fight the fine if issued.

The effort was amazing and the hit was awesome. Fields plays like a donkey and got what he deserved. It was well worth the flag. Great job and great game by Wheat.

Something clearly hit Fields' in the chin area. I don't think it was some invisible force field. Considering Wheat's helmet was right there, I'm thinking it was that.

At some point the QB has to bear some responsibility....trying to make that play so late....I mean when do you protect YOURSELF?

The torso is close to the head or neck area. So it's up for interpretation.

You are not a running QB if you throw a pass. And as for the QB's running, the rule even states "even if his body position is in motion." But first on the list of the rule points out that the QB only needs to be in "passing posture" either before OR after releasing the ball, so you are also defenseless BEFORE you release the ball and are in your wind up.

By the way, for your avatar, he sings so fine, don't you agree! I never knew until this year that that was an actual statement from a real song they borrowed for the movie.
